Have you ever wondered how a decentralised social media platform could give you more control over your data and privacy? Meet Mastodon, a rapidly growing alternative to traditional social networks, where users create their communities without the oversight of tech giants.

Are you curious how this platform skyrocketed to 2.8M active users in just six months, with over 9,5K independent instances worldwide?

Discover how Mastodon is reshaping social media, providing a space for institutions like the European Commission and everyday users to connect freely and securely across the Fediverse.

The What

Mastodon is a decentralised social media platform operating on the principles of the Fediverse. Launched as an open-source alternative to platforms like X, users can create accounts, post updates, and follow others in a microblogging format. Any software implementing ActivityPub is federated in nature, making this the unique difference to common commercial social media. Mastodon’s own uniqueness is based on its mission to make the Fediverse available to everyone, with a strong focus on user experience. Individual, group, or organisation-operated instances communicate via the ActivityPub protocol independently, allowing users to choose or create their instances and granting more significant control over their data, privacy, and the communities they join.

For What

Mastodon promotes self-governance and privacy, allowing users to engage in conversations without the oversight or algorithms of major corporations. Its decentralised approach ensures that communities remain independent, allowing users to pick who they trust with their data and what rules they want for their social network experience.

THE REACH

Mastodon’s influence is broad, particularly within Europe, and steadily grows in reach. To name a few, it is used by the NGI initiative (social.ngi.eu) and institutions such as the European Commission (ec.social-network.europa.eu), the latter with around 30 accounts and nearly 200K subscribers.

THE MILESTONES

Across the Fediverse, Mastodon connects 2.8 million active users spread across 9,5K instances, creating a network of decentralised communities where users can interact freely, far from the constraints of centralised platforms.

These accomplishments demonstrate the strength of Mastodon’s decentralised model and its capacity to offer a viable, community-driven alternative to centralised social media platforms.
