Open Forum 72- Next-Generation Internet

Wednesday 20th, 12.20-13.20 (Room XXIV-E)

The Internet is at the core of our socio-economic development. However in the last years we witnessed an increasing level of distrust towards Internet technology. In order to re-establish trust in the users and boost socio-economic growth, the Internet of the future will have to deliver more to the users. Therefore we have to build it around common and shared values that will put humans at the center of technology development.
The European Commission has launched the Next Generation Internet initiative, to support the development of a human-centric Internet around core European values. This Internet of Values will also contribute in shaping Internet Governance for the next decade and the Open Forum will be the perfect venue to present the initiative on the Internet Governance global scene.

In the context of this year IGF, which will take place in Geneva from the 17th to the 21st of December, we will host an Open Forum on the Next Generation Internet initiative on the 20th of December. The Open Forum format is interactive in nature with the audience being fully involved: there will be live feedback both on line (via the twitter page, the Facebook page and via an app that will show real time users’ comments on a tablet screen) and on site.

Different speakers will contribute to the panel.  A very important contribution to the discussion will be provided by the Internet Society. In their annual Global Internet Report, in fact, ISOC presented the results of a consultation on the future of the internet, that they run in parallel with our consultation exercise. The results confirm the trends: 1) the trust of users towards internet technologies is decreasing. 2) concerns about security 3) emerging relevance of IoT and AI. We are considering also to invite two experts in the area of data protection/privacy and distributed architecture. Both of which are topics that are on our current ICT-24 call. We will then present the on-going ICT-24 Call in more details.

The NGI Study conducted by NLNet and Gartner will also be presented during the Open Forum, the panellist will introduce the methodology they used and the topics identified so far for the Work Programme 2019 and the feedback received for the long-term NGI vision. The results will also be presented in order to receive feedback from the audience on the identified topics.
