From NGI to the Open Internet Stack: Charting the Next Chapter in Europe’s Digital Future

Since its launch in 2018, the Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative has empowered over 1,400 open-source projects, laying the groundwork for a more open, inclusive, and human-centric internet in Europe. But as the digital landscape evolves, so must NGI.

What’s next? A strategic shift toward the Open Internet Stack (OIS) – a bold new framework to translate NGI innovation into readily deployable, interoperable digital solutions designed to serve Europe’s public and private sectors alike.

The OIS vision builds on NGI’s strong foundations to deliver open-source building blocks that support digital identity, cybersecurity, decentralized platforms, and regulatory compliance. This will enable Europe to scale its digital autonomy and reduce reliance on proprietary technologies.

Backed by new Horizon Europe funding, this initiative aims to deliver concrete impact, tested in real-world environments, and developed in collaboration with industry, policymakers, and communities.
