NGI projects end use of X

The Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative projects announced their decision to discontinue the use of X social media platform, effective immediately. This strategic move aligns with NGI’s commitment to fostering an Internet that embodies European values of trust, security, and inclusion.

The NGI initiative, launched by the European Commission, aims to shape the development of the Internet into an “Internet of Humans” that responds to people’s fundamental needs and reflects the values and norms enjoyed in Europe.

Recent evaluations have raised concerns about X’s alignment with these principles, particularly regarding data privacy, user autonomy, and the spread of misinformation. In response, NGI projects have chosen to redirect their focus toward platforms and communication channels that prioritize user-centric design, transparency, and ethical standards.

NGI projects will continue to engage with their communities through channels that uphold these values, such as Mastodon and Peertube both powered by the open standard for decentralised social networking ActivityPub, ensuring stakeholders remain informed and actively involved in shaping a more human-centric Internet.
