The second annual NGI Forum – Press Release

This week, the second annual edition of the Next Generation Internet Forum will be held in Portugal. On 13 September 2018, innovators, researchers, policymakers and internet activists from more than 30 countries around the globe will gather in Porto’s Alfandega conference centre for the NGI Forum 2018.

The NGI Forum is a key event for those who are working to create an internet based on core European values such as decentralisation, democracy and fairness.

The NGI Forum will bring together some of Europe’s most progressive thinkers in the next-generation digital arena to analyse and plan how we build the internet of tomorrow,” said event moderator and chair Dr Monique Calisti, CEO of Martel Innovate.

The NGI Forum should see some in-depth discussions and lively debates on important topics such as how to put humans in the centre of the data economy, artificial intelligence and machine learning, using blockchain to put control of data back into the hands of the people and incorporating all-important digital ethics into technology,” Calisti said.

European Commission speakers include Pearse O’Donohue, Director Future Networks, Directorate‑General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CNECT), who will speak on “Creating the future together – an internet of humans”. He underlines this with a short statement: “We need to gather and discuss concepts, technologies and applications coming from the widest possible community, i.e. from researchers, SMEs & startups, industry players, policy makers, and civil society. We need to work together to build a future Internet that better responds to the expectations of EU citizens.
