What if online payments worked like digital cash? Private for the buyer, transparent for the seller, and fully compatible with the money we already use?

GNU Taler makes this possible. It is a payment system that is anonymous for citizens, auditable for merchants, scalable for banks, and libre for everyone.

Developed by GNUnet e.V. with NGI support, GNU Taler is more than a piece of code. It is an infrastructure, a project, and a working product that proves digital payments can be fast, private, and fair ; without inventing a new currency.

The What

GNU Taler is a Free Software payment system built on blind signatures, enabling unlinkable payments that protect individual privacy while keeping merchants accountable for taxation. Unlike cryptocurrencies, it does not create speculative tokens or waste energy. Instead, it integrates with existing money, whether it is euros, dollars, or francs, and clears transactions in milliseconds.

Taler delivers the qualities of cash in the digital world: no registration, no surveillance, no fraud. At the same time, it gives regulators what they need: auditable revenue, tax compliance, and a secure, fraud-resistant infrastructure.

For What

Taler is designed for real-world use. For individuals, it means one-click payments that protect privacy by default. For merchants, it ensures instant, fraud-proof settlement. For communities and banks, it provides an open, sovereign infrastructure they can host and operate themselves.

It is a system that is anonymous, taxable, open source, and ready for deployment; a balance of privacy and accountability that no other payment solution has achieved.

THE REACH

GNU Taler is the core of the NGI Taler project, supported by the European Commission and NLnet. Its rollout includes partnerships with banks, publishers, and universities, with pilots already live in Switzerland and Germany.

Extensions like TalDir enhance Taler’s usability, making it possible to link everyday identifiers ; emails, phone numbers, social handles ; to wallets, turning peer-to-peer transfers into something as simple as sending a message.

THE MILESTONES

  • 🔹Developed as a GNU project with a strong academic foundation.
  • 🔹Security-audited and piloted in real-world settings, including university cafeterias and vending machines.
  • 🔹Reached version 1.0 in 2025, marking its maturity as a production-ready system.
  • 🔹Expanded through NGI funding into banking pilots, media payments, and peer-to-peer use cases.

GNU Taler proves that payments can be anonymous for buyers, taxable for sellers, and open for communities ; all at once. It is Europe’s answer to digital sovereignty in finance, built not on speculation or surveillance, but on fairness, trust, and freedom.
