A security infrastructure for gaining trust in another realm's identity can be imagined with DNSSEC/DANE and certificates. Embedding this in actual authentication schemes, with minimal change, is quite a challenge. We found theoretic options in Kerberos and in SASL; the former scales well and the latter offers migration path for current password users.
