The LibreOffice technology used by Collabora Online is the best office codebase outside Microsoft, but still it has feature gaps. Our proposal is to fund the development of a selection of such missing features in LibreOffice. This is meant to ease the transition of users from being locked-into a proprietary, Microsoft 365 to an Open Source, self-hosted collaborative editing service. As part of the process, we also plan to extend ODF to have features that allows data portability from OOXML based services with less formatting loss. The goal of the project is to improve the LibreOffice Technology – and by extension Collabora Online – so that users of proprietary Online office suites have the choice to easily switch to an alternative, open source, self-hosted office suite that is secure and respects your privacy.
Adding these missing features are relevant for the needs of the society, given that LibreOffice and Collabora Online are two of the most popular open source office tools, so everyone benefits from this work.
The project is meant to develop a selection of missing interoperability features in LibreOffice Technology & Collabora Online. It is not meant to fix all interoperability problems.
