The goal of the NGI Zero Commons Fund is to help deliver, mature and scale *new internet commons* across the whole technology spectrum, from libre silicon to middleware, from P2P infrastructure to convenient end user applications. This holistic, full-stack approach is needed if we want to reclaim the public nature of the internet and yield the full benefits from technology as a society.
Research & Innovation
NGI Sargasso focuses on catalysing European collaboration with the US and Canada on topics such as trust and data sovereignty, digital identity, internet architecture renovation, decentralised technologies, and standards, which are of utmost importance to shape the future Internet.
The Internet has turned our existence into the digital era, revolutionising our health, our wellbeing, our social life, our education, our information. However, multiple threats related to truthfulness, trust and identity (ID) have been identified when people interact in this digital world: delusion and manipulation, personal privacy violation & personal data exploitation, unknown provenance of information, anonymity in favour of criminal activities, biases in AI algorithms, spread of fake news, skills mismatches, serious breaches of security to mention some of them.
We work towards better technologies to restore and maintain European sovereignty and to secure democratic ownership of the digital society. NGI Zero actively works towards digital commons and trustworthy technological building blocks for the next generation of the internet. The goal is to help set the course of the evolution of technology, provide people with concrete new tools and more reliable infrastructure, which provides better overall security and allow them more agency and choice.
