The Overweb Challenge: hack your idea of what the Internet can be
The Internet is the Wild Wild West. People believe what they read on the web but they shouldn’t. It was not always that way. The web started out as communities of researchers sharing knowledge within their field. But search and social media algorithms along with fake accounts have created an Internet of silos. People and information are isolated in polarized bubbles that channel their attention with fake virality. This is enabled by browsers that make the Internet flat and static, while treating people and information as commodities.
But browsers have the potential to connect information and access the Internet in its full dimensionality. We can have a deeply connected Internet that layers knowledge on top of web pages. We can have an Internet of Ideas.
We are building browser extensions and network protocols to access the Overweb, a trust layer over the webpage that provides deep layers of context for any idea on the web enabling you to discern what you can believe on the web. Just as the Wild Wild West ultimately became Silicon Valley, the Internet will evolve into the Overweb.
