SUMMARY:Web2 vs Web3 - Towards the Next Generation Internet
DESCRIPTION:Web2 vs Web3 – Towards the Next Generation Internet\nThe internet has been the greatest disruption of our times. In the past 50 years\, it has become the essential infrastructure supporting our digital lives\, revolutionising businesses\, public and private spheres and connecting its users to both digital and physical worlds.\nTo master its future\, Europe needs to take an active role in defining the evolution of the Internet. We will thus explore how the EU is contributing to building the future internet as an “internet of humans”\, in line with European rights and principles\, and to delivering internet technologies that enable better control of our digital life\, respects our privacy\, permits better sharing of data\, based on users’ preferences\, and enables better socio-economic impact based on improved trust. \nThe course will then dive in on the transition from Web2 to Web3\, in particular how we might move from the status quo of Web2\, where we have central gatekeepers controlling content\, towards a more decentralized web\, one in which content will lay more in the hands of individuals. \nSubtopics \n• The EU vision for the future internet and the technology building blocks behind the “internet of humans”\n• Political challenges brought by Web3. Current solutions for those of Web2\n• Status quo of Web2\, exploration of Web3 and alternative definitions (Web4&5)\n• Socio-economic potentials (and threats) of the Web3 and its applications\n• Privacy and data protection challenges on Web3\n• Tokenization of sustainable agriculture \nSpeakers \n• Gemma CAROLILLO\, Acting HoU – Next-Generation Internet – European Commission\, DG CONNECT\n• Fernando ALMEIDA\, Professor Instituto Superior Politécnico Gaya\n• Shermin VOSHMGIR\, Founder of Blockchain Hub and director of the Research Institute for Crypto Economics at the Vienna University of Economics\n• Paola HEUDEBERT\, Head of Legal & Public Affairs archipels.io \nBackground information \nThis event is part of the CONNECT University Autumn School 2022 on Secure & Sustainable Digital Infrastructures\, that aims to  address how this decade’s state-of-the-art digital infrastructure solutions fit over existing ones\, fostering a circular economy system\, while ensuring a high degree of security. \nCheck this blogpost for the full programme and more information.

SUMMARY:eSSIF-Lab webinar
DESCRIPTION:WEBINAR: Find out all about the final eSSIF-Lab “Completing the Framework” Open Call\nJoin eSSIF-Lab’s live webinar and find out everything about the current “Completing the Framework” Open Call. There’s €212K available! \nREGISTER HERE! \nAbout this event\nOver the past years\, the question of how we can protect our identity in the world of online has been getting more heated. The Self-Sovereign Identity paradigm stepped in with the idea itself\, that everyone should be in charge of their own digital personal information\, and that it is the data owner who should decide on how this data is being used and by whom. \nIn addition\, eSSIF-Lab Framework (at GitLab) will be built upon the open-source components provided through its Infrastructure-oriented open call and the generic SSI-based services and applications (being developed with the support of the eSSIF-Lab 1st Business-oriented Programme) and the SSI domain-oriented solutions addressing real-world needs or opportunities (that will be supported by the eSSIF-Lab 2nd Business-oriented Programme). \neSSIF-Lab kicked off one last additional Open Call “Completing the framework”\, on the 15th of November\, lasting until the 15th of January. \nJOIN THE WEBINAR and find out everything about the Open Call! \n\nMore info at https://spaces.fundingbox.com/spaces/ngi-next-generation-internet-ngi-news-events/61b868267cf08f133dbecb9a

SUMMARY:NGI ASSURE webinar on future of OpenPGP
DESCRIPTION:State-of-the-art work on chains of trust\nThis freely accessible online event on November 23 from 10 to 11 CET organized by NGI Assure dives into the future of OpenPGP encryption. Researchers and developers funded by different NGI programmes discuss their work on PGP-related technology and how to advance the state of art in decentralized trust. \nDespite the rise of mobile messengers and chat apps\, email continues to be an integral communication channel on the internet. But like core internet technologies\, email was not designed with privacy and security in mind. To combat growing problems like phishing\, spam and surveillance\, various methods of encryption provide confidentiality\, authentication and integrity of data. OpenPGP is a widely used email encryption standard (defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force in RFC 4880) derived from Phil Zimmerman’s PGP. Implementations of OpenPGP are used for a wide range of purposes\, to sign\, encrypt and decrypt texts\, emails\, files\, directories and disks. OpenPGP-compatible systems also allow users to create their own ‘web of trust’\, where people accumulate and sign each others keys for trusted communication without a central point of authority. \nDecentralized encryption\, authentication and integrity checking are important requirements for trustworthy communication and data handling. That is why the Next Generation Internet initiative funds various R&D-projects that advance the state of art in OpenPGP-implementations and chains of trust. In this freely accessible online event OpenPGP-projects funded by NGI Assure and NGI0 PET present and discuss their ongoing work\, and think about the future of the technology they contribute to. \nWant to know more? No prior registration is needed\, simply join the online webinar on Tuesday November 23rd at 10:00 CET. The event is organized using BigBlueButton\, an open source webconferencing framework which is actively supported by NGI Zero to add end-to-end encrypted chat. \nPresentations (5-10 min)\n\nNeal H. Walfield — Improving OpenSSH authentication and PKI through OpenPGP\nHeiko Schaefer — Developing and hardening an OpenPGP certificate authority for group trust management\nmuppeth — GnuPG-based email encryption for emails at rest\nWiktor Kwapisiewicz — Add support for trusted platform modules (TPM) to Sequoia PGP\nJustus Winter — Drop-in replacement for widely used encryption software GnuPG (GNU Privacy Guard)\nUli Fouquet — Add plug & play encryption to customer relationship management system\nOther speakers still to be confirmed

SUMMARY:ODI Summit 2021 – Data People
DESCRIPTION:Summit 2021 –  Data <> People\nTaking place online\, this year’s ODI Summit explores the relationship between people and data. \nOver the past year\, the role that data plays in our lives has come into sharper focus: from the news stories we read to the apps where we report our health and the services we use every day. \nWe have all become ‘data people’ – more conscious than ever of the data we produce\, use and share\, and the decisions made using data about us. \nNever again can data be the preserve of an expert minority. It is increasingly the lifeblood of businesses\, communities and society at large. And when these groups work together\, the data becomes so much more valuable to everyone.

SUMMARY:Safer Internet Forum 2021
DESCRIPTION:The Safer Internet Forum (SIF) is a key annual conference in Europe where policy makers\, researchers\, law enforcement bodies\, youth\, parents and carers\, teachers\, NGOs\, industry representatives\, experts and other relevant actors come together to discuss the latest trends\, opportunities\, risks and solutions related to child online safety. This year’s edition will take place online and will explore how to make Europe’s Digital Decade fit for children and young people. \nTherefore\, the 2021 Safer Internet Forum will showcase key findings from the recent digital principles consultation\, amplifying the voices of children and young people to deliver a vision for a #DigitalDecade4YOUth. The event will highlight the priorities that different groups\, including parents\, carers and teachers\, have identified in order to fulfil children’s rights in a digital world while allowing them to engage\, create and contribute within safe\, ethical and inclusive online spaces. \n \nSIF 2021 will take place online on Wednesday\, 6 and Thursday\, 7 October 2021 and will consider what we want the digital world to look like in 2030. We will hear from a number of leading experts in the field who will offer their vision of the landscape over the next decade and discuss what key stakeholders need to do to ensure that we have the internet that we want and need. Importantly\, the voices of young people will be present throughout the Forum as they share their hopes and concerns for their futures online. \nAdditionally\, a number of deep-dive sessions will explore in more depth the four pillars of the current BIK Strategy which provides a holistic approach to keeping children and young people safe online. Pillar 1 deals with high-quality content for children and young people\, Pillar 2 is concerned with stepping up awareness and empowerment\, Pillar 3 aims to create a safer online environment for children through approaches such as parental control tools and age verification\, while Pillar 4 leads the fight against child sexual abuse and child sexual exploitation. \n***Registration is now open***\nSafer Internet Forum (SIF) 2021 is organised by European Schoolnet on behalf of the European Commission in the framework of the EC’s Better Internet for Kids Strategy with funding provided by the Connecting Europe Facility programme (CEF). SUMMARY:Next generation of human-AI/robot systems
DESCRIPTION:ATI policy seminar on ‘Next generation of human-AI/robot systems – what role for policy?\nThe policy seminar on ‘Next generation of human-AI/robot systems – what role for policy?’ is part of a series of 8 policy seminars organised within the Advanced Technologies for Industry (ATI) project commissioned by EISMEA and the European Commission – DG GROW. \nThe project provides a systematic monitoring of technological trends and reliable\, up-to-date data on advanced technologies to properly support the implementation of policies and initiatives and finally promote a competitive European industry. \nResearch and innovation policies across Europe are actively promoting the development of AI and robotics technologies. Beyond unfolding the potential in these technologies\, policy will also need to play an important role to prepare the future workforce for the upcoming changes and mitigate the less beneficial societal and ethical related consequences of automation and human-machine interactions. Successful technological transformation has various challenges that will have to be addressed both by policy and change in industrial behaviour including trustworthy technology\, qualifications\, change management and organisation\, safety and occupational health\, liability and ethical behaviour. In this context\, the online policy seminar will aim to: \n\npresent the ATI analysis on human-robot and human AI systems and policy implications\nidentify challenges not yet addressed and point out at policy gaps\ndevelop recommendations how to improve policy.\n\nProgramme – 10:00h – 12:30h CET:\n\nWelcome and introduction to the ATI project | Marta Batalla-Masana\, European Commission\, DG GROW\nPresentation of the ATI project and its policy brief on human-machine interactions | Technopolis Group\nThe Cobots race – how to stay ahead? | Stig Yding\, Danish Technology Institute\nAI – fairness\, equality and skills development | Anne Bouverot/Tanya Perelmuter\, Fondation Abeona\, France\nAI ethics label | Bertelsmann Stiftung (tbc)\nPanel discussion\nClosing remarks and next steps | European Commission\n\nLooking forward to meeting you virtually at the event!\nRegister here: https://ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/runner/ATI_AIROBOT

SUMMARY:OW2con’21
DESCRIPTION:Leveraging the European Open Source Ecosystem\nOpen-source software in modern corporate information systems is what brings together experts from around the world at OW2con’21. The central theme of OW2con’21 is “Leveraging the European Open Source Ecosystem.” \nThe world needs a vibrant European open source ecosystem. As open-source software has become mainstream how do we ensure it creates long-term value for all and enables good jobs and digital sovereignty across societies? The growth and sustainability of the ecosystem depend on the success of its stakeholders: open-source projects and developers\, open-source foundations\, systems integrators\, software vendors\, and users. We all play a part through our technology choices\, our best practices\, our engagement with other players. We each have a vested interest in the well-being of other stakeholders. OW2con’21 will address the many challenges of ensuring a sustainable European open source ecosystem.

SUMMARY:NGI Forward Salon: Lightest/Trust Infrustructure
DESCRIPTION:The NGI ESSIF-Lab project TRAIN (Trust Management Infrastructure) leverages a decentralized data protected approach for a Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) context. It proposes an infrastructure for SSI that can be used to verify conformance of the issuer to a certain policy and trust scheme. This is important because an ever-increasing number and variety of transactions are conducted digitally over the Internet. At the same time\, identity and other credential schemes are evolving towards decentralized complex and open approaches; anyone can be entitled as issuer. For all this\, trust is a central empowering factor. So how can you be sure that the entity\, be it person or organization making the transaction or issuing a credential is really who they say they are? \nThe challenge of decentralized trust is not entirely new. Trading\, for example\, has always involved trust and risk. Whether it is for barter\, or for promissory notes. Before modern communication\, when trading with someone you did not know\, you would take up references from someone you did trust. The longer the distance\, the more difficult and risky that was. Long-distance trading sometimes involved family members\, travelling and becoming established in those distant locations. In the Twenty-First Century\, sophisticated methods to provide that trust between counterparties have been developed\, but still rely on someone to provide the references. These now take the form of ‘Trusted Third Parties’ who may be regulated from within an industry itself\, or through legislation\, to provide ‘certification’. So\, how do you obtain the details of the certifications that you need to satisfy acceptable risk and build trust? \nThe EU H2020 project LIGHTest has developed a flexible approach for this challenge: global lightweight trust infrastructure providing parties of electronic transactions with automatic validation of trust based on their individual trust policies through the publication\, querying\, and cross-jurisdiction translation of information relevant in making decisions. LIGHTest empowers counterparties to establish trust and awareness of risk through recognizing the ‘Chain of Trust’ and associated certification. It can also provide automatic verification of that certification for every transaction. Verifiers are empowered to make their own trust decisions while different actors (industry organizations\, NGOs) can set up their own trust schemes\, based on established ones like eIDAS. \nFraunhofer\, SICPA\, and Validated ID will present and demonstrate the results of their work in LIGHTest and their NGI ESSIF Lab Projects.

SUMMARY:IntellIoT Event
DESCRIPTION:IntellIoT Event: Human In the Loop – a guide to successful AI\nLet’s discuss the human-machine collaboration of the future! \nWill AI outsmart the human? Or going one step further – will it make the humans redundant? Not according to the science. In fact\, researchers state that a collaboration between humans and machines is the main factor of successful next generation technology. The Human-in-the-Loop approach aims to solve the biggest problem in current AI – the machine’s lack of decisiveness when approaching an unknown situation. The question is: how to incorporate the human aspect in technology? \nOn June 15th\, the innovation experts from IntellIoT\, Startup Colors\, and the Meetup.Ai community in Berlin invite you to a knowledge-packed online event. \nJoin us in a conversation on the modern approach to human-machine collaboration and its importance in the process of developing next generation IoT solutions. \nJoining us in the conversation will be: \n\nRob van Kranenburg\, Founder of #IoTCouncil and #IoTDay\nCarina Pamminger\, Chief Project Manager at HOLO-LIGHT\n\nMore speakers coming soon. \nModerating the conversation will be Nicholas Borsotto Machado Monteiro from meetup.ai. \nAll information and registration here
