They have experienced at a young age the innocent and empowering era of the internet\, an age of knowledge distribution and new opportunities arising with the mass diffusion of the web. An era of supposedly endless natural resources. The Internet and the digital revolution bring immensely powerful tools\, yet their effects on society and the Planet – were mostly unanticipated: for most of their lifespan they have just been considered useful tools and economy drivers. In truth\, tools are still in early adoption years. The same as when the car went through years of modulation (creating new traffic rules\, installing airbags\, seat belts and so on). Ideas of how we use and should use online digital devices are only starting to be framed. If we want a digital future that reflects the needs of society and environment\, we need to think\, discuss and act NOW. We argue that society and environment are strongly intertwined\, as values of the first impact directly on the Planet. Climate is the stone guest at the innovation table. As much as the NGI advocates for a human centric vision against technology-centric efficiency paradigms\, we think this vision should be placed in the natural ecosystem\, the place we live in. \nMotivations\, hopes\, achievements: digging into solutions for major societal challenges\, this salon aims at rebuilding a Millennials narrative that focuses not on how the internet has gone wrong\, but how we believe it could be improved and contribute to a better society\, thriving in a rich natural ecosystem. SUMMARY:NGI Workshop @ Web Summit 2018
DESCRIPTION:The Next Generation Internet (NGI) team will be at the Web Summit 2018 in Lisbon from 5-8 November\, and will host a workshop “Building together the Next Generation Internet (NGI)\, funding opportunities for internet innovators”. The workshop will take place on 6 November\, 15:00 – 16:00. \nThe NGI workshop will introduce the Next Generation Internet initiative\, which was launched by the European Commission in 2016 to shape a better internet for the future – an internet for humans. Developers\, start-ups\, researchers are invited to join the NGI team to discuss tech\, policy and business challenges as well as to discover new funding opportunities. \nThe workshop will provide the opportunity to share knowledge with leading experts from a variety of disciplines\, including interactive technologies\, artificial intelligence\, IoT\, hyper-connected sociality\, etc.\, and will be highly interactive. \nNGI workshop speakers will include: Olivier Bringer\, Stefano Foglietta and Jean-Luc Dorel\, all from the European Commission. They will be joined by Michiel Leenaars from NLNet\, Isabella De Michelis from ErnieAPP and Monique Calisti from Martel Innovate\, who will also act as a moderator. \n\nThe NGI initiative will be present for the whole duration of the Web Summit at the European Commission-branded booth.
