SUMMARY:NGI @ MyData 2020
DESCRIPTION:FUNDING INNOVATION THROUGH THE NEXT GENERATION INTERNET (NGI) INITIATIVE\nSession Host & Presenter: David Seoane \nGoal: Present an overview of the available funding opportunities provided by the Next Generation Internet initiative through open calls. This initiative aim at funding the next Internet researchers and innovators to address technological opportunities around the following areas: privacy and trust\, search and discovery\, decentralised architectures\, blockchain\, Internet of Things\, social media\, interactive technologies\, as well as technologies supporting multilingualism and accessibility. \nDescription: The session will provide an overview of current and future open calls provided by the initiative\, that are managed through the cascade funding mechanism under the Horizon 2020 programme. This mechanism consists of an agile and simple process where the funding is distributed through ongoing NGI Research and Innovation Actions (RIAs) that provide support to projects from outstanding academic researchers\, hi-tech startups and SMEs.\nFunding is allocated to projects using short research cycles targeting the most promising ideas. Each of the selected projects pursue their own objectives\, while the NGI RIAs provide the programme logic and vision\, technical support\, coaching and mentoring\, to ensure that projects contribute towards a significant advancement of research and innovation in the NGI initiative.\nThe focus is on advanced concepts and technologies that link to relevant use cases and that can have an impact on the market and society over all. Applications and services that innovate without a research component are not covered by this model.

SUMMARY:NGI @ MyData 2020
DESCRIPTION:A sustainable internet for a greener data economy\nNGI FUNDING: A SUSTAINABLE INTERNET FOR A GREENER DATA ECONOMY\nPresenters: Dr Giovanni Rimassa\, Dr Monique Calisti\nHost: Dr Monique Calisti \nGoal: To present the Next Generation Internet initiative and invite newcomers to join\, calling attention to the main challenges and opportunities to transform the internet of today into a more inclusive\, trustworthy\, democratic\, resilient and sustainable one. \nDescription:\nThe Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative (ngi.eu) has been launched by the European Commission with the ambition to gather and empower the community of researchers and innovators in Europe at work to transform the Internet in a way that it responds to people’s fundamental needs\, including trust\, security\, and inclusion\, while reflecting the values and norms all citizens enjoy in Europe. The NGI has been evolving and growing right from its inception\, gathering a large community of about 550 Internet researchers and innovators supported in 366 third-party projects. These projects cover a number of applications and technological building blocks that are essential to improve both the way the internet works and how it empowers people and communities. \nAs a matter of fact\, the internet and its supporting technologies are essential to accelerate the twin digital and green transitions our society and economy need\, especially to overcome the major crisis induced by the COVID19 pandemic. However\, while advanced internet technologies are essential for this transition to happen rapidly and efficiently\, they are also part of a major problem: the overall impact on the environment of digital technologies themselves. \nData traffic is increasing tremendously (+25% on average a year)\, corresponding to 55% of the annual energy consumption of the whole ICT sector. This year\, due to the COVID19 pandemic and its effects on our lives\, the Internet traffic\, for instance\, has been generally 25% to 30% higher than usual. This leads of course to an enormous growth of energy consumption\, which calls technologists\, policy makers\, private and public organisations to adopt the proper measures to move to a more sustainable internet in the wider context of a greener data economy. \nIn this session\, in line with the vision recently presented in the  “Vision for the future internet” NGI working paper\, we will discuss and present challenges\, opportunities and recent initiatives that focus on the development and promotion of green digital technologies for a more sustainable internet in the context of a greener data economy.

SUMMARY:NGI @ IGF2020
DESCRIPTION:Trustworthy internet technologies against COVID-19\nTechnology has played a key role in the COVID-19 global health crisis outbreak and it will play an even more important role in supporting countries and citizens to overcome the crisis. This session will look at how effective technology-based measures have been in tackling the spread of the virus; how they have ensured the respect of laws and fundamental rights; and what lessons can be learned for the development of trustworthy internet technologies and their use for public policy purposes. \nThe public health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic created an unprecedented global challenge to health care systems and our way of life. Digital technologies have played an important role since the beginning of the crisis outbreak and they will play an even more important role in supporting countries and citizens to manage and overcome the crisis. In response to this emergency outbreak\, the European Commission has taken a series of initiatives to coordinate a common European approach for the use of mobile applications and mobile data in the context of the coronavirus crisis. The European Commission adopted a Recommendation to support Member States in exiting the COVID-19 crisis and supported European Member States in preparing and implementing a common European Toolbox for the use of mobile applications for contact tracing and warning. These instruments were flexible and agile enough to allow the European Union to promptly react and adapt its response to the emergency. Starting from the COVID-19 crisis experience\, this open forum aims at discussing how technologies can play a role in a global health crisis and yet continue to respect human rights and enact principles and values such as privacy\, trust\, openness\, transparency\, decentralisation\, user control and inclusiveness. The session will look at how effective technology-based measures taken in different countries and regions in the world have been in tackling the spread of the virus; how they have ensured the respect of laws and fundamental rights; and what lessons can be learned for the development of trustworthy internet technologies and their use for public policy purposes. The European Commission has also funded several projects developing technologies and apps to fight the COVID-19 outbreak\, notably in the context of the Next Generation Internet (NGI) programme. The open forum will be the occasion to present to the audience concrete projects and to reflect on lessons learnt and way forward. \nModerators:\n\nMonique Calisti\, CEO and Head of Martel Media and Consulting\, NGI Outreach Office Director\nEsteve Sanz\, European Commission\n\nSpeakers:\n\nGemma Carolillo\, Deputy Head of Unit\, Next-Generation Internet\, DG CNECT\nDirk-Willem van Gulik\, Special advisor to NL government for COVID-19 tracing apps\nJelena Malinina\, Digital health\, policy officer at  BEUC\, the European consumer organisation\nHong-Wei Jyan\, Director General\, Department of Cyber Security of Taiwan\, responsible for the development of the apps on COVID-19

DESCRIPTION:Digital Around The World event addressing EU-US Internet collaboration\, through an NGI Think Tank\, involving major stakeholders from both sides of the Atlantic. \n\n“Future of Internet: the EU/US Next Generation of Internet Initiatives”\n20 October 2020 | 8 pm – 9 pm CET \nIn our global context\, the Next Generation Internet\, an initiative launched by the European Commission back in 2016\, will be successful only if a worldwide consensus is found\, enabling a Human-centric Internet. To that end\, collaboration between the EU and the US is essential\, both areas being strongly committed to develop the future of Internet and to shape a sustainable landscape for NGI developments. \nIndeed\, the NGI initiative should design specific actions for policy collaboration\, shared technology development and interaction between user-communities\, with other initiatives in the world where parts of the NGI infrastructure are designed and deployed; and the US are one of the main places where such activities are held. \nThink NEXUS – Think tank for the collaboration on NEXt generation internet between EU-US – is a European Commission (Horizon 2020 research program) project that aims to reinforce EU-US collaboration\, through its dedicated Think Tank\, involving major stakeholders from both sides of the Atlantic on Next Generation Internet related thematic in three focus areas: Science & Technologies; Innovation & Entrepreneurship; Policy. \nThis 1-hour session will be dedicated to further advancing EU-US talks around technologies & policies’ priorities for cooperation. \n\n“Next Generation Internet: A Visual collaboration workshop on EU-US NGI research and innovation”\n20 October 2020 | 11 pm – 12 am CET \nThe session will focus on giving the opportunity to a number of the third-party projects funded by two of the NGI RIAs\, NGIatlantic.eu (EU-US collaboration on NGI)\, NGI Pointer (Open Internet architecture renovation) and an EU-US initiative funded by NGI Explorers (EU Fellowships to the US)\, a chance to present their project ideas to the global audience of the 24 hour-long digitalarounbdtheworld.org event. \n\nDr. Mirko Presser\, Associate Professor\, Aarhus University\nJames Clarke\, EU Strategic Liaison Manager at the Telecommunications Software and Systems Group\, Waterford Institute of Technology\nSara Pittonet Gaiarin\, Senior Project manager\, Trust-IT Services & COMMpla\n\n\nFor more info\, read the programme here.

SUMMARY:NGI Policy Summit 2020
DESCRIPTION:We are very excited to announce the NGI Policy Summit 2020. \nBringing together a coalition of internet changemakers from 28-29 September\, the Summit will lay out an ambitious European vision for the future internet and explore the policy interventions and technical solutions that can help get us there. The Summit is aimed at local\, national and international policymakers but we also welcome researchers\, innovators and civil society organisations who can share practical ideas for a more human-centric internet. Register your interest now to join us online. \n\nThe NGI Policy Summit is the flagship policy conference of the European Commission’s Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative. Organised by the City of Amsterdam and Nesta\, the conference aims to set out a compelling vision for the future internet; to empower policymakers across all levels of governance; and to strengthen the ecosystem of the NGI initiative. It provides a unique opportunity to focus on remedies\, not just diagnosis; to explore the concrete building blocks of our shared European vision for the internet\, and forge the coalition to make it happen. \nAimed at policymakers across all levels of governance (EU\, National and local/city-level)\, this year’s event will have a particular focus on the following five themes: \n\nSustainability & resilience: How we can we leverage connectivity and smart technologies to build a more sustainable and resilient and ethically-sourced internet\, and how we can conversely reduce the environmental footprint of the infrastructure underpinning the internet itself?\nTrust & identity: How do we give citizens control over their own data and help them regain trust in online interactions? How can we best use the opportunities offered by new models of online identity and decentralisation to help us do this?\nNew models for the data economy: How do we respond to the extreme centralisation of power in today’s internet economy and the dominance of business models that favour the concentration and exploitation of personal data? How can we help alternative governance and ownership models\, such as data commons and trusts\, succeed?\nInclusion: How do we ensure the future of the internet is more inclusive\, representative and human-centric? How can it help break down economic\, cultural and political barriers and contribute to European integration?\nCollective intelligence: How can Collective Intelligence be augmented through emerging technologies to identify problems or solutions\, mobilise citizens\, and solve the kinds of social challenges that individuals or technology alone cannot?\n\nRegistration\nThe event is free of charge. Register your interest now to join us online.

SUMMARY:Blockchains for Social Good
DESCRIPTION:EIC Horizon Prize\n‘Blockchains for Social Good’ Finalists’ Day\nJointly organized between DG CNECT and DG RTD \nMONDAY 10 FEBRUARY 2020\n• Joint Research Centre (JRC) •\nRue du Champs de Mars 21\, 1050 Brussels \n  \nDuring the ‘Blockchains for Social Good’ Finalists’ Day\, 23 finalists selected out of the 178 applications received for the 5M€ EIC Horizon Prize on ‘Blockchains for Social Good’ will discuss their social innovation solutions with other innovators in front of an engaged audience. In a five-minute pitch\, all candidates get the chance to present the impact of their solutions on social good aspects and the underlying economic models\, and will demonstrate how their solutions would work for people\, concretely. \nIn each session\, ample time will be devoted to questions from the public (asked in person\, or though twitter and sli.do – use the event code #BC4GOOD) and from other finalists as well\, to explore and debate the advantages and limitations of the proposed solutions. \nThis interactive event will bring together blockchain innovators\, specialists and curious minds from all across Europe\, in order to learn how Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT) might positively affect our society in various application areas related to sustainability and SDGs. \n[vc_single_image image=”29731″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center” onclick=”custom_link” link=”https://blockchainsforsocialgood.eventbrite.com”] \nPlease find more info about the Horizon Prizes here: https://ec.europa.eu/programmes/horizon2020/what-horizon-2020 \n[vc_tta_accordion active_section=”0″ collapsible_all=”true”][vc_tta_section title=”About the EIC Horizon Prize ‘Blockchains for Social Good’” tab_id=”BFSGP”][vc_column_text] \nAbout the EIC Horizion Prize ‘Blockchains for Social Good’\nThe EIC Horizon Prize ‘Blockchains for Social Good’ awards the next generation of Blockchain innovators in the broad area of social good\, where Blockchain technologies can be vital to enable solutions for the emerging environmental\, social and economic sustainability challenges. \nBy awarding 5 million euro to the innovators that come up with the most promising Blockchain solutions to different social good areas\, the initiative aims to motivate the development of decentralised social innovations beneficial for the European society. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Where do the finalists come from?” tab_id=”comefrom”][vc_column_text] \nWhere do the finalists come from?\nIn 2019\, applicants from 43 different countries submitted 178 proposals\, 33 of which from non-EU countries. Applicants are mostly small private companies or consortia\, and include individuals and public institutions. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”How are the prize winners selected?” tab_id=”winnersselected”][vc_column_text] \nHow are the prize winners selected?\nA multidisciplinary jury of 30 high-level experts in Blockchain technologies and economic and social sciences has evaluated the 178 applications against the five criteria set in the rules of contest. This includes positive social impact\, decentralization and governance\, usability and inclusiveness\, viability at large scale\, and European added value. \nThe jury selected the finalists in November 2019\, and will identify the winners after additional hearings\, by the end of March 2020. \nThe jury also identified\, according to the Rules of Contest\, 4 additional areas\, related to SDGs\, which could not be foreseen at the inception of this Prize\, in 2015. It also noted that unfortunately none of the above threshold applications were addressing the original area “participation in democratic decision-making by enabling accountability\, rewarding of participation and/or anonymity”. \nThe resulting areas are as follows (in brackets\, the full description as indicated in the rules of Contest):[/vc_column_text]\ntraceability & fair trade (demonstrating the origin of raw materials or products and supporting fair trade and the fair monetization of labour); \ntransparency of public processes (allowing for a greater visibility of public spending and a greater transparency of administrative and production processes); \ndecentralised circular economy (enabling the development of decentralized social networks or clouds\, or of decentralized platforms for the collaborative economy);\nmanagement of public records (managing property\, land registry or other public records); \nfinancial inclusion (contributing to financial inclusion)\naid & philanthropy (new area);\nenergy (new area);\nhealth (new area);\nquality content (new area).\n\n[/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_accordion][vc_empty_space height=”20px”] \n[vc_column_text] \nAbstracts Finalists’ Day EIC Prize “Blockchains for Social Good”\n[/vc_column_text][vc_basic_grid post_type=”post” max_items=”-1″ gap=”15″ orderby=”title” order=”ASC” initial_loading_animation=”none” grid_id=”vc_gid:1581259337204-4b8bac6e-aea7-5″ taxonomies=”882″][vc_empty_space height=”20px”] \n[vc_column_text] \nAGENDA\n[/vc_column_text]\n\n\n\nEIC Horizon Prize\, Blockchains for Social Good Finalists’ day\n\n\n\nTime\nMonday 10 February 2020\n\n\n\n\n08:30-09:00\nRegistration and welcome coffee\n\n\n\nOPENING\n \n\n\n\n09:00-09.15\nWelcome by Olivier Bringer\, Head of Unit ‘Next Generation Internet’ of DG Connect at the European Commission\n\n\n09:15-09.30\nBlockchains for… Social Good? by Fabrizio Sestini\, Senior Expert\, DG Connect Next-Generation Internet\n\n\n\nTRACEABILITY & FAIR TRADE\nModerator: Rob van Kranenburg \n\n\n\n09.30-10:30\nPresentations by:\nCircularise (CirSource)\, COIN (see slides here)\, Minexx (see slides here)\, Provenance (PPP – see slides here)\nQ&A\n\n\n\nTRANSPARENCY OF PUBLIC PROCESSES\, and MANAGEMENT OF PUBLIC RECORDS\nModerator: Rob van Kranenburg \n\n\n\n10:30-11:15\nPresentations by\nAlice (GIVE – see slides here)\, OriginalMy (OMHorizon2020 – see slides here)\, VidChain (see slides here)\nQ&A\n\n\n\nBREAK  \n\n\n\n11:15 – 11:45\nCoffee Break  – Poster presentations\nCommission setting the scene\n\n\n\nDECENTRALISED CIRCULAR ECONOMY\nModerator: Monique Calisti \n\n\n\n11:45-12:30\nPresentations by\nBlockchain my Art (BMA – see slides here)\, Common Good Chain (ComGo – see slides here)\, Kleros (CKH2020 – see slides here)\nQ&A\n\n\n\n12:30-13:45\nLUNCH BREAK\nPoster presentations\n\n\n\nFINANCIAL INCLUSION\nModerator: Gaelle Le Gars \n\n\n\n13:55-14:30\nPresentations by\nCommonsHood (see slides here)\, Did4Basics (see slides here)\, GMeRits (see slides here)\nQ&A\n\n\n\nBREAK  \n\n\n\n14:30 – 15:00\nCoffee Break  – Poster presentations\n\n\n\n\nAID & PHILANTHROPY\nModerator: Gaelle Le Gars \n\n\n\n15:00-15:45\nPresentations by\nAID:Tech\, BitDegree (BDG Scholarships – see slides here)\,\nUnblocked Cash Project (OXBBU – see slides here)\nQ&A\n\n\n\nENERGY\nModerator: Monique Calisti \n\n\n\n15:45-16:30\nPresentations by\nBED4EUC (see slides here)\, Prosume (see slides here)\, SolarCoin\nQ&A\n\n\n\nHEALTH and QUALITY CONTENT\nModerator: Marc Tavernier \n\n\n\n16:30-17:30\nPresentations by\nMeditect\, Vigicard – Content Blockchain (COBLO – see slides here)\, WordProof (see slides here)\nQ&A\n\n\n17:30-20:00\nDRINKS  & TALKS\n\n\n\n\n[vc_single_image image=”29961″ img_size=”full” onclick=”custom_link” link=”https://blockchainsforsocialgood.eventbrite.com”]

SUMMARY:NGI SALON @ EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
DESCRIPTION:30 years of the Web: where do we go next?\nBuilding radical new alternatives for a more democratic future internet\nJoin us on Friday 22 March at the European Parliament for an exciting afternoon of talks and bold ideas about the future of the internet: how can we build an internet and connected world that is more democratic\, inclusive and resilient for all? \nDuring this event\, we will also launch a compilation of radical new visions for the internet\, by both leading and emerging thinkers and artists from Europe and beyond. This event is organised by the NGI Move\, EU Engineroom and recently launched NGI Forward projects. \nThis March marks the thirtieth anniversary of the World Wide Web. As we reflect on its history\, we must also take the opportunity to think about what we want the future of the web\, the internet and everyday life in a connected world\, to look like. The internet has undoubtedly brought us a lot of good over the past decades\, but its astronomical impact has not always led to the betterment of society. Power over our data is concentrated in the hands of very few players and new technologies are creating cracks in our democracies. We find ourselves stuck between two dominant models: the monopolistic corporate-led internet of Silicon Valley and large-scale government surveillance systems of Beijing. \nCan we now come up with a third narrative\, where citizens and communities are in control and can determine their own future?\nThe Next Generation Internet initiative\, the European Commission’s ambitious new flagship programme which seeks to build an internet that’s more inclusive\, resilient and democratic by the end of the decade\, offers and opportunity for Europe to take charge of shaping such a new narrative. This event is part of a longer series part of the NGI in which we think about the kind of future internet we would like to see. \nRegistration will open at 12:45 with the event starting promptly at 13:30. The session will finish at 16:30. \nConfirmed speakers:\n\nRob van Kranenburg\, Founder\, IoT Council\nKatja Bego\, Senior researcher\, Nesta\, Coordinator NGI Forward and EU Engineroom\nMarietje Schaake\, Member of European Parliament (D66/ALDE) Foreign Affairs Trade and Tech\nOlivier Bringer\, Head of Unit\, DG Connect\, European Commission\nGer Baron\, Chief Technology Officer\, City of Amsterdam\nJulie Dawson\, Head of Regulation and Policy\, Yoti\nManon den Dunnen\, Trust Frameworks\, Police Innovation and Sensemakers\nCassie Robinson\, Head of Digital Grant Making\, Big Lottery Fund\nSophie Bloemen\, Co-Director\, Commons Network\nDelfina van Ditmar Fantini\, Tutor/Research Design Products Programme\, Royal College of Arts\, London\nFabrizio Sestini\, Senior Expert for Digital Social Innovation\, European Commission DG Connect\nPeter Baeck\, Head\, Centre for Collective Intelligence Design\, Nesta\nMarta Arniani\, Founder\, Futurible\n\n  \n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n12:45PM – 13:30PM\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\n1:30PM – 1:45PM\n\nWelcome\n\nRob van Kranenburg\, Founder\, IoT Council\nKatja Bego\, Senior researcher\, Nesta\, Coordinator NGI Forward and EU Engineroom\n\n\n\n\n1:45PM – 2:15PM\n\nIntroductory talk\n\nMarietje Schaake\, Member of European Parliament (D66/ALDE) Foreign Affairs Trade and Tech\n\n\n\n\n2:15PM – 2:30PM\n\nThe Next Generation Internet Initiative: what is it and why is it vital for Europe\n\nOlivier Bringer\, Head of Unit\, DG Connect\, European Commission\n\n\n\n\n2:30PM – 3:15PM\n\nBuilding blocks for a better future internet\n\nKatja Bego\, Senior Researcher\, Nesta | Session chair\nGer Baron\, Chief Technology Officer\, City of Amsterdam\nJulie Dawson\, Head of Regulation and Policy\, Yoti\nManon den Dunnen\, Trust Frameworks from Police Innovation and Sensemakers\nCassie Robinson\, Head of Digital Grant Making at the Big Lottery Fund\n\n\n\n\n\n3:15PM – 3:30PM | Coffee break\n\n\n\n3:30PM – 3:40PM\n\nA Vision for a Shared Digital Europe\n\n\n\n3:40PM – 4:20PM\n\nHarnessing collective intelligence: how do we involve people in shaping the future internet\n\nMarta Arniani\, Founder\, Futurible | Session chair\nCassie Robinson\, Head of Digital Grant Making at the Big Lottery Fund\nSophie Bloemen\, Co-Director and Director\, Commons Network\nDelfina van Ditmar Fantini\, Tutor/Research Design Products Programme\, Royal College of Arts\, London\nPeter Baeck\, Head of the Centre for Collective Intelligence Design\nFabrizio Sestini\, Senior Expert for Digital Social Innovation\, European Commission DG CONNECT\n\n\n\n\n4:20PM – 4:30PM\n\nEvent close and book launch\n\nMarta Arniani\, Founder of Futuribile\nRob van Kranenburg\, Founder at IoT Council

SUMMARY:NGI SALON @ 4YFN
DESCRIPTION:The past\, present and future of (y)our internet\nTarget participants: Millennials (1980-2000)\nDo you remember the first time you went on the internet? The (open) chat rooms and the pixeled snake? Past\, present and future. By bringing (y)our internet memories and ideals together we will define what’s needed for a fair and sustainable digital future. \nWe start from the premise that Millennials don’t want to\, nor can return to a fully analogue world. We must\, therefore\, learn how to deal positively with the advantages of the world wide web\, and avoid its pitfalls. \nWhilst the internet and the digital revolution have\, doubtless\, provided us with immensely powerful tools\, they have also raised many ethical concerns. This is actually not surprising\, since the digital revolution is still in its early adopting years. Just as the car and car usage have gone through many years of modernization (creation of new traffic rules\, installation of airbags\, seat belts etc.)\, ideas about how we use and should use online digital devices are only starting to be framed. If we want a digital future that reflects the needs of society and the environment\, we need to think\, discuss and act NOW. \nMotivations\, hopes\, achievements: digging into solutions for major societal challenges\, this salon aims to rebuild a Millennial’s portrayal that focuses not on how the internet has gone wrong\, but the ways in which we believe it could be improved and contribute to a better society\, thriving in a rich natural ecosystem. We will be mapping challenges and possible solutions towards a vision for a sustainable society in a technology-pervasive future. \n  \n \n  \nContext\nThis activity is organized within the framework of the Next Generation Internet initiative launched by the European Commission. Results will be presented to the European Parliament.\nThe workshop is organized in collaboration with 4YFN. \n

SUMMARY:NGI @ FOSDEM19
DESCRIPTION:Next Generation Internet initiative – Year Zero\nCome work for the internet on privacy\, trust\, search & discovery\n Track: Lightning Talks | Room: H.2215 (Ferrer)\nLast year during a FOSDEM keynote Michiel Leenaars\, director of strategy at NLnet foundation\, introduced the Next Generation Internet initiative together with member of the European parliament Marietje Schaake. NGI aims to be the first concerted effort to put significant public funding to hands-on work to really fix the internet. Meanwhile\, the project is on its way. \n \nOn December 1st 2018\, the first open calls opened with funding for independent researchers and developers working on free and open source projects in the area of privacy and trust enhancing technologies and on search\, discovery and discoverability. In this talk Leenaars\, project lead of NGI Zero that is currently offering 11.2 millioneuro in grants\, will tell everything you need to know about the various open calls that you can apply for. With grants ranging from 5.000 euro to 50.000 euro available for research\, development and engineering effort NGI Zero aims to lead the push toward the post-Snowden internet we want. \nFrom the humble four nodes of the ARPANET that were bootstrapped half a century ago this year\, until today\, the internet has grown at a breathtaking pace. But while the technology has gradually penetrated every aspect of our lives\, it has become clear that not all is well and at least some part of its growth has spiraled out of control. In fact\, web inventor Tim Berners-Lee has recently called the current state of his creation (and by extension the larger internet) “dystopian”. \nThe internet of especially the last fifteen years has brought about undesirable concentration of power (“winner takes all”)\, and while it has given us many good things has also caused loss of human agency in many other realms. Internet has given the world totalitarianism the likes of which it has never seen\, has enabled political manipulation at unprecedented scale affection the lives of hundreds of millions of people. Internet has eroded the private sphere to the point where it has been declared dead\, and the mantra of ‘big data’ and business analytics frame the discussion we should be having. Due to its open global nature and the wholly new types of economic dominance neither internet users nor governments both have an adequate answer against dominant super-actors. How dow we stop large scale abuse of power. Have the web and the internet become “anti-human” as Berners-Lee posits? And what can we do about it? \nThe internet is not going to fix itself. Many of the more promising efforts in this realm have been ‘bottom up’ efforts from individuals or small teams\, but these isolated efforts certainly have missed critical mass to actually scale up and change the mainstream internet and the commercial landscape where powerful actors are fully vested in the current course. The Next Generation Internet initiative aims to bring those efforts together\, strengthen and unite them and turn them into something that can be deployed across the whole internet. Let there be no doubt about it: fixing the internet is an insane ‘moonshot++’ effort: the internet is the largest technical structure man has ever made\, and the task at hand is to vastly improve its very operating fabric with > 3 billion people using it on a daily basis. \nAnd yet we have to: fixing the internet is essential to safeguard our economy and create a more resilient and robust infrastructure. And even more importantly we also depend on it to upholding our way of life. How the internet\, the web and the mobile ecosystems work directly impacts our human values. Crafting a better internet is essential for maintaining basic human rights such as privacy for the near-future Europe. \nSurely\, a larger political agenda of Europe should be an integral part of the approach – in some cases regulating the most predatory behaviour from bad actors might be the only thing left to put the genie back in the bottle and to restore health back to the internet. However\, it is also clear that a significant part of the solution lies in the hands of technologists. NGI Zero is probably the first funding programme of its scale that is entirely based on the principles of free/libre\, open source software. We need smart and resourceful people that come and work for the internet. Could this be you? In this talk Michiel Leenaars will explain how the funding works\, and how NGI Zero deals with important issues like localisation\, accessibility\, security\, packaging\, documentation\, responsible disclosure and more. Come and work for the internet too!

SUMMARY:INFO SESSION ON ICT-31: EU-US collaboration on NGI
DESCRIPTION:INFO SESSION ON ICT-31: EU-US collaboration on NGI\nThis “EU-US collaboration on NGI” information session focuses on Research and Innovation Actions (RIAs): \nCommon experiments by EU/US teams on emerging topics for the Next Generation Internet / Tomorrow’s Internet programmes on top of EU/US experimental platforms. \nFor grants awarded under this topic for Research and Innovation actions beneficiaries may provide support to third parties as described in part K of the General Annexes of the Work Programme. The support to third parties can only be provided in the form of grants. The respective options of Article 15.1 and Article 15.3 of the Model Grant Agreement will be applied. Only organisations established in the EU and associated countries will be eligible for European Commission funding. \nThe Commission considers that proposals for Research and Innovation actions requesting a contribution from the EU of EUR 3.5 million would allow this specific challenge to be addressed appropriately. As a reference\, 80% of the EU funding should be allocated to financial support for the third parties. Nonetheless\, this does not preclude submission and selection of proposals requesting other amounts. \nThe agenda for the session:\n\nIntroduction | Georgios Tselentis\, European Commission\nICT-31 mechanisms and introduction to the topic | Georgios Tselentis and Stefano Foglietta\, European Commission\n2 min pitches by possible proposers: find partners\, present idea\, have feedbacks\, …\nQ&A

SUMMARY:NGI SALON @ WEB SUMMIT LISBON
DESCRIPTION:You have ten years to save the Planet – A Millennials’ narrative for the Next Generation Internet\nNGI Salon @ Web Summit Lisbon\nSocial Innovation Village delegation night\nDate: 7th November 2018 | 18:00-19:30\nLocation: Casa do Impacto \nModerators:\nMarta Arniani (futuribile / curating futures)\nJennifer Veldman (DataWatchers) \n  \nMillennials form the generation that was born in an analog world and are the early adopters of the digital one. They have experienced at a young age the innocent and empowering era of the internet\, an age of knowledge distribution and new opportunities arising with the mass diffusion of the web. An era of supposedly endless natural resources. The Internet and the digital revolution bring immensely powerful tools\, yet their effects on society and the Planet – were mostly unanticipated: for most of their lifespan they have just been considered useful tools and economy drivers. In truth\, tools are still in early adoption years. The same as when the car went through years of modulation (creating new traffic rules\, installing airbags\, seat belts and so on). Ideas of how we use and should use online digital devices are only starting to be framed. If we want a digital future that reflects the needs of society and environment\, we need to think\, discuss and act NOW. We argue that society and environment are strongly intertwined\, as values of the first impact directly on the Planet. Climate is the stone guest at the innovation table. As much as the NGI advocates for a human centric vision against technology-centric efficiency paradigms\, we think this vision should be placed in the natural ecosystem\, the place we live in. \nMotivations\, hopes\, achievements: digging into solutions for major societal challenges\, this salon aims at rebuilding a Millennials narrative that focuses not on how the internet has gone wrong\, but how we believe it could be improved and contribute to a better society\, thriving in a rich natural ecosystem. It will engage with Millennials from the Web Summit Social Innovation Village and local social innovation networks who bear with them that positive and emancipatory outlook on technology that Millennials should be remembered for. \nInfo and inquires: Marta Arniani: marta (at) futuribile.org \n
