SUMMARY:NGI SALON @ 4YFN
DESCRIPTION:The past\, present and future of (y)our internet\nTarget participants: Millennials (1980-2000)\nDo you remember the first time you went on the internet? The (open) chat rooms and the pixeled snake? Past\, present and future. By bringing (y)our internet memories and ideals together we will define what’s needed for a fair and sustainable digital future. \nWe start from the premise that Millennials don’t want to\, nor can return to a fully analogue world. We must\, therefore\, learn how to deal positively with the advantages of the world wide web\, and avoid its pitfalls. \nWhilst the internet and the digital revolution have\, doubtless\, provided us with immensely powerful tools\, they have also raised many ethical concerns. This is actually not surprising\, since the digital revolution is still in its early adopting years. Just as the car and car usage have gone through many years of modernization (creation of new traffic rules\, installation of airbags\, seat belts etc.)\, ideas about how we use and should use online digital devices are only starting to be framed. If we want a digital future that reflects the needs of society and the environment\, we need to think\, discuss and act NOW. \nMotivations\, hopes\, achievements: digging into solutions for major societal challenges\, this salon aims to rebuild a Millennial’s portrayal that focuses not on how the internet has gone wrong\, but the ways in which we believe it could be improved and contribute to a better society\, thriving in a rich natural ecosystem. We will be mapping challenges and possible solutions towards a vision for a sustainable society in a technology-pervasive future. \n  \n \n  \nContext\nThis activity is organized within the framework of the Next Generation Internet initiative launched by the European Commission. Results will be presented to the European Parliament.\nThe workshop is organized in collaboration with 4YFN. \n

SUMMARY:NGI @ GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES 2018
DESCRIPTION:A Next Generation Internet to serve the #NextGeneration\n\nWorkshop with Rob van Kranenburg (NGI Move)\, Tom De Block (Blockchain Solution Architect Settlemint) and Paul Malone (SpeakNGI.eu)\n\nThis workshop will be organised around two distinct elements. The first element will be an interactive session deisgned to get input from the civil society participants into the EC vision for re-imagining the future internet driven by human values. The second element will provide a description of how an internet technology can serve civil society organisations.\n\nIn the first part of this workshop\, we will seek to gain input from participants to get an understanding of how the future internet can be re-imagined to serve civil society organisations and their communities.\n\nWe seek input from participants to the following:\n\nHow does the current internet not serve global citizens?\nWhat are the challenges that need to be addressed?\nCan we prioritise these challenges?\nHow can the future internet support engagement of the #NextGeneration?\n\n\nThis consultation will commence during the workshop and will be continued throughout the conference via an online consultation platform provided by the NGI Initiative.\nIn the second part of the workshop\, we will briefly touch upon the funding possibilities with in NGI.eu for innovative work on decentralized data management\, trust and the expansion of the terms privacy and security into privacies and securities.\n\nWe will set the scope for the case of blockchain in the context of civil society and NGO by looking briefly at top Charity ICO projects\, ACT\, an Ethereum blockchain based social action platform supposedly ‘more responsive and efficient than non-governmental organizations (NGOs)\, Alice\, a platform that brings transparency to social funding through blockchain technology\, and the press release of the contest sponsored by IBM and Global Citizen\, for a charity donation blockchain platform: “If we are going to solve societal issues such as extreme poverty or infectious disease\, we need to make sure that every cause is getting the money they were promised\, especially from the world’s most impactful donor group: federal governments.”\n\nWe will then discuss as hands on as possible a productive and fitting use case the blockchain company Settlemint is working on.\n\nLinks:\nhttps://ngi.eu\nhttps://consultation.ngi.eu\nhttps://awards.ngi.eu\nhttps://settlemint.com\nhttps://www.trackico.io/1/?category=charity\nhttps://news.bitcoin.com/pr-act-ngo-2-0-bringing-power-back-people/\nhttps://cointelegraph.com/news/ibm-and-ngo-global-citizen-announce-contest-for-blockchain-charity-platform\nhttps://alice.si
