SUMMARY:IoT 2021
DESCRIPTION:The 11th International Conference on the Internet of Things (IoT 2021)\, which will take place in an online setting from Nov. 8 – Nov. 11 2021\, is the premier forum to share and discuss cutting edge research in all areas of development for the Internet of Things. \nThe IoT 2021 Conference will be held this year in Switzerland\, a country known for its chocolates and cheeses. The Institute of Computer Science at the University of St.Gallen and the city of St.Gallen are looking forward to returning to in-person engagements with the IoT academic and industrial community in a new-normal style (thanks to the gradually reducing COVID-19 restrictions). In the conference program\, we have created enough space for the personal serendipitous professional and social exchange among the IoT community\, and will create hybrid networking options to allow the mingling of offline and online participants at the conference.

SUMMARY:NGIoT | IoT and Edge: Instruments\, Priorities and Partnerships
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of the workshop is to take stock and consolidate on the key messages from the previous workshops on IoT and Edge computing\, organised by the Horizon 2020 project NGIoT\, held on 11 September and 7/8 December 2020. \nNGIoT invites European industry and the public sector to reflect on the results from these workshops and convey their position or provide a spontaneous feedback on the role of Edge Computing as they experience it in their relevant sectors. Feedback could be provided orally or through quote and/or expression of interest in supporting the future strategic discussion on Edge Computing at the European level. \nWe welcome your vision\nThe previous workshops have shown a general consensus that the current shift from Cloud to Edge offers significant opportunities for Europe. While currently\, 80 percent of data is stored and processed centralised in the cloud and 20 percent at the Edge in smart connected objects\, in five years\, this is expected to be the opposite. The shift to the Far Edge is driven by the need for real time solutions\, for more intelligence in devices\, and is also pushed by the green agenda\, as well as quests for increased privacy and security. In addition\, Edge computing is supporting the shift in focus from big data to relevant data. \nEurope is strongly positioned at the Edge/Far Edge\, covering key players in the value chain from sensors and systems\, embedded computing\, connectivity\, SW design to the development of complex products\, but forces should be joined\, moving from a value chain to a value network. Also\, research needs to come up to speed in order to support the developments in industry. \nRecent workshops contributed to the vision on how to make the most out of European investments in research\, innovation and deployment related to IoT and Edge computing in the coming years. Perspectives for main priorities for research\, innovation and deployment on the short/midterm and long term have been addressed. Awareness should be created on the strength of Europe and what Europe still needs. Which instruments for collaboration would create most value? Which barriers are the most critical ones identified? And most important\, who are the relevant European key players that can drive the seismic shift from Cloud to Far Edge? How to support SMEs to contribute? \nREGISTER TO THE WORKSHOP HERE!

SUMMARY:IoT Day 2020
DESCRIPTION:THE WORLD IS LOCKED DOWN AND YOU ARE AT HOME. YOU ARE ALSO ONLINE AND HAPPY WITH THAT. ALTHOUGH WE CAN NOT MEET IN PERSON\, WE MEET ON SCREENS. \nIoT Day started in 2010 and is an open invitation to the Internet of Things Community to set up an event\, a lunch\, a talk with the neighborhood on what #IoT is and what it means in everyday life for all of us.\nThis year the entire scope will be virtual. \nIoT Day 2020 wants to flush out those initiatives in #IoT\, AI\, blockchain\, that are helping people to connect\, to stay healthy and stay sane. What can objects do to help? How can we bring an environment alive to support our daily needs? What tools can support the wellbeing of children at home?

SUMMARY:NGI KEYNOTE @ WORLD IOT EXPO 2018
DESCRIPTION:IoT\, NG and pragmatic cybernetics\nInternet of Things Expo\, Huihaiwan Intelligent Sensing Forum\nWuxi Xinhu Pullman\nThe main focus of the talk is in three areas: infrastructure\, services and entitlements. \nInfrastructure needs to be balanced between capabilities in the Cloud (data-lakes and AI) and edge (5G)\, between intricate and complex semi-autonomous to autonomous self-healing systems and local repairability to ensure urban resilience. This requires attention on two very different but equally important skilling strategies. \nInfrastructure support services.\nA service is any operation that supports either machines or people in their wellbeing and abilities to build a meaningful and cooperative existence. This thus entails the entire trajectory from BAN- to VWAN; BAN (body\, wearables)\, LAN (home\, smart services to the home)\, WAN (mobility in general from bike to connected car and plane)\, and VWAN (the very wide area network; the smart city). \nBlockchain as well as connectivity itself have become commodities and are thus services in this view. Services support everyday activities. Entitlements are new entities as synchronous and fixed identities cannot support services in a hybrid infrastructure. A balance between anonymity (in federated sets of identities that are tied to services such as shopping\, dating\, recovering from illness….) and accountability (in stable sets of relationships of behavior and activity) for processes\, machines\, products and people in wallets\, is vital to create popular support from all generations for a new type of governance. \nEntitlements support services.\nExtelligence\, a term by Ian Stewart and Jack Cohen\, a biologist and mathematician\, is “the cultural capital that is available to us in the form of external media (e.g. tribal legends\, folklore\, nursery rhymes\, books\, videotapes\, CD-ROMs\, etc.)” In an information-rich\, digitally connected world\, where much of the knowledge and tools that we make use of are outside our heads there will be a need to develop new communication ‘senses’ that allow us to manage and make use of the enormous amount of information we will be confronted by. This will lead to the development and adoption of new and different types of human-computer interfaces and different ways of communicating with technology. We know this as deep learning and machine learning; artificial intelligence. \nBut this is the superficial reading of extelligence. Ian Stewart and Jack Cohen\, “regard the ‘complicity’ of extelligence and intelligence as fundamental to the development of consciousness in evolutionary terms for both the species and the individual. ‘Complicity’ is a combination of complexity and simplicity\, and Cohen and Stewart use it to express the interdependent relationship between knowledge-inside-one’s-head and knowledge-outside-one’s-head that can be readily accessed.” (idem) \nhttp://en.wiotexpo.cn

September. It is hosted by the research center “Dependable Internet of Things“\, located at Graz University of Technology. This school targets graduate students interested in security aspects of tomorrow’s IoT devices. \nCurrent advances in technology drive miniaturization and efficiency of computing devices\, opening a variety of novel use cases like autonomous transportation\, smart cities and health monitoring devices. However\, device malfunction could potentially threaten human welfare or even life. Malfunction might not only be caused by design errors but also by intentional impairment. As computing devices are supposed to have high and permanent network connectivity\, an attacker finding a vulnerability might easily target millions of devices at once. Moreover\, integration of computing devices in everyday items exposes them to a potentially hostile physical environment. \nA central requirement of tomorrow’s IoT is the ability to execute software dependably on all kinds of devices. IoT devices need to provide security in the presence of network attacks as well as against attackers having physical access to the device. \nDuring the five-day school\, participants will gain awareness of these IoT-related challenges. Introductory classes are supplemented by advanced courses in the area of system security\, cryptography as well as software and hardware side-channels. During spare time participants are invited to enjoy the city of Graz and attend organized events. \nCHES 2018\nTake the opportunity to extend your stay in Europe with a visit of CHES’18\, which immediately follows the school. More information is given under Venue. \nFind out more here. \n\nINDUSTRY TRACK\nThe Cluster Focus Group:Cyber Security & IoT proudly presents the two day Industry Track as part of the Graz Cyber Security Week in September 2018! \nTuesday Sept. 4th & Wednesday Sept. 5th at Alte Technik Graz. \nBeing colocated with TU Graz’s Cyber Security Summer School\, industry professionals and Europe’s brightest cyber security talents have the chance to participate side by side in a number of intriguing plenary sessions and workshops. \nThe industry track will contain a number of expert talks spanning from an Introduction to Cryptography\, Overview of System Level Security\, Cyber Crime\, Cloud Security\, GDPR (DSGVO) and of course Blockchain technologies and applications. \nFind out more here. \n \n

SUMMARY:NGI Meetup @ Lyon
DESCRIPTION:What kind of a smart society do we want?\n\nPANEL\n\nLoretta Anania\, Scientific Officer at DG Connect\nRob van Kranenburg\, Founder of Council #IOT\nMarco ‘Radium’ Sachy\, Hackivist of dyne.org and the DECODE project.\n\n\n\nMODERATOR\n\nRob van Kranenburg\, NGI Move\n\n\n  \nFOCUS OF THIS EVENT\nThe EU is not an integrated community if it has no agency over data of people\, machines and processes. These are predominantly in the hands of commercial “over the top” non-EU players. Aggregated data leads to new combined services that generate and produce more data. This cycle leaves full innovation capabilities outside of a direct strong response (regulation is a weak response that cannot be a basis for a de jure situation). In the EU consumer expenditure accounts for about 56% of GDP . These consumer actions will increasingly be carried out in the context of the IoT as personalized dynamic pricing is extended down to the smallest purchase (not just airline seats\, but washing powder and also meals in restaurants…). At the 2012 Rome ‘Transformational Technologies #4: Seminar Implications for an Expanding Threat Environment’ five breakout groups (senior intelligence\, police and military) produced scenarios of major threats: only one was military\, two were about DIY (Do It Yourself) Bio and two about breakdown of society\, because of the inability of current institutions to deal with the digital. At the “Inspiring Leaders – Executive Summit\, Milano\, December 1\, 2016 on Forecast 2017: megatrends for the next Century” Franco Bruni highlighted the Rodriks trilemma that shows that democracy\, national sovereignty and hyper globalization cannot go together. He maintained that if we want more globalisation\, we must either give up some democracy or some national sovereignty. He points to the fact that the EU was created to avoid war and conceived with a mission to become a single architectural entity through protocols like the euro. \nIn times of perpetual innovation (not at the edges\, but at the core of developments)\, populist movements on the rise\, people worried about their jobs\, pensions\, everyday expenses\, untenable inequality gaps\, energy uncertainties\, it seems that the single layer governed Asian tigers are finding more productive political answers to ensure a balance between centralization (on infrastructure and sustainable policies) and decentralization (innovation on applications and services). It is not the best balance. They need to engineer a move towards more decentralisation that is incompatible with their political heritage and mind set. There is a strong tendency to also control data and information on top of owning internet (of things) architectures and media production capabilities. \nWe Europeans\, however\, can envisage the Next Generation Internet as a coherent set of centralized protocols that can be operationalized in a fully decentralized way; a new conception of the techno-political landscape tuned to the reality of what is happening in every domain of human activity; to be supported\, assisted and guided by secure real time data streams of sensor input\, to bring big data\, AI and dynamic analytics into the heart of decision making and to eventually reform the EU as a platform of services for all. \n

SUMMARY:#NGI4EU - IoT\, Privacy\, Trust\, Decentralized\, Discovery\, Search
DESCRIPTION:Towards a future Internet that better responds to the expectations of the citizens!\n„We need the collective vision and engagement of all stakeholders to create the Next Generation Internet. We need to gather and discuss ideas concerning concepts\, technologies and applications coming from the largest possible community. We need to work together to build a future Internet that better responds to the expectations of the citizens.“\nBruno Kessler Lecture by Roberto Viola\, Director-General for Communications Networks\, Content & Technology at the European Commission \n  \nNGI Move\, @NGI4EU brings you Salons and Meetings all over Europe to promote\, exchange and debate the Next Generation Internet movement embodied in the upcoming ICT-24 calls in 2018\, 2019 and beyond. \n\nMeet us in Amsterdam!\nWednesday December 20\, from 10:00pm to 12:00am\nRoundtable with Rob van Kranenburg (NGI Move)and presentations on digital priorities\, privacy\, trust\, search\, discovery and decentralized data management as well as Internet of Things.  *RSVP kranenbu@xs4all.nl* (maxcap 30)  \nVenue:\nThe Things Network\, Rockstart\n10 Rigakade\,\n1013 BC Amsterdam\, Netherlands \n\nWe are yet again at a critical stage for Europe. With the threat of geopolitical instability coming from several dimensions Europe needs to not just assert its presence on the world stage\, but moreover needs to assert its digital sovereignty to further its vision of a single digital market. Europe must become a leader in the co-creation of a Next Generation Internet in a more human centric\, societal and economic beneficial ecosystem of researchers\, high tech start-ups\, industrial and government leaders as well as grassroots communities and individuals. \nTo gather the most impactful group of constituencies in a community\, build a shared vision\, inspire policymaking and prototype possible alternatives\, a series of Salons and Meetups are launched by the NGI Move project\, alongside a set of co-creation workshops and annual NGI awards. The Salons are co-creation and design fiction events aimed at rethinking the Internet assumed functioning (in terms of technology\, governance\, sustainability) and inspiring novel public as well as private services and products relying on it. Participants are invited to discuss around questioning topics and open challenges and build collaboratively possible future scenarios\, defined as ‘moonshot’. A series of Moonshots questions the current status quo and federate stakeholders around the building of viable alternatives. \nWorking close with the European Commission\, NGI Move will distil actionable policy recommendations and stimulate the NGI debate. The vision is to create an NGI that is at the service of people and stimulates business opportunities\, centred on European values and competing globally. Our message is pragmatic cybernetics\, balancing extreme centralisation and extreme decentralization where data stays with citizens. \nThis initiative aims at developing a more human-centric Internet supporting values of openness\, cooperation across borders\, decentralisation\, inclusiveness and protection of privacy; giving the control back to the users in order to increase trust in the Internet. It should provide more transparent services\, more intelligence\, greater involvement and participation\, leading towards an Internet that is more open\, robust and dependable\, more interoperable and more supportive of social innovation. \nFor the ICT-24 call closing in 2018 ‘R&I Actions’ in the following three sub-topics will be called for. Proposals should address only one of these sub-topics. Specifically\, the call is designed for 20/80% spilt\, where 80% is reserved for sub-granting. \n\nPrivacy and trust enhancing technologies: as sensors\, objects\, devices\, AI-based algorithms\, etc.\, are incorporated in our digital environment\, develop robust and easy to use technologies to help users increase trust and achieve greater control when sharing their personal data\, attributes and information.\nDecentralized data governance: leveraging on distributed open hardware and software ecosystems based on blockchains\, distributed ledger technology\, open data and peer-to-peer technologies. Attention should be paid to ethical\, legal and privacy issues\, as well as to the concepts of autonomy\, data sovereignty and ownership\, values and regulations.\nDiscovery and identification technologies: to search and access large heterogeneous data sources\, services\, objects and sensors\, devices\, multi-media content\, etc. and which may include aspects of numbering; providing contextual querying\, personalised information retrieval and increased quality of experience.\n\nFollow @NGI4EU to find out more.

SUMMARY:ThingsCon 2017
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nA conference about the future of hardware\, connected devices and Internet of Things\nThingsCon is Europe’s leading conference about the future of hardware\, connected devices and Internet of Things (IoT). Started in Berlin it is growing into a global community of like-minded practitioners around Internet of Things and new hardware. ThingsCon fosters the creation of a human-centric & responsible IoT. To this end it provides practitioners with an open environment for reflection & collaborative action. \nThingsCon Amsterdam started with a one day conference on 7 November 2014\, inspired by the successful format of that year’s first Berlin edition. In 2015 we grew into a conference with about 250 attendees and we felt that we needed to keep growing the Dutch community by also organising smaller focused events; the Salons. In 2016 we organised five Salons and ended the year again with the 3rd edition of the Thingscon Amsterdam conference\, with an international line-up of top notch speakers and about 25 sessions and 50 speakers on different aspects of making a meaningful impact through product and service design of connected products\, with around 330 attendees. \nThingsCon Amsterdam 2016 took place on 1 & 2 December at the Volkshotel in Amsterdam. Find a report on the talks and sessions on the reporting page. \nWe continued to organise the Salons in 2017. Next to that we organised a research trip to Shenzhen in April. \nThingscon Amsterdam is organised by Iskander Smit (Info.nl)\, Marcel Schouwenaar (The Incredible Machine) and Monique van Dusseldorp (Van Dusseldorp)\, in close corporation with the Berlin team. \n  \nMirko Ross reporting on heise online\nThingsCon Amsterdam: Für ein verantwortungsvolles Internet of Things \n  \nRob van Kranenburg – Next Generation Internet\, what is it? \n \nWatch the speech on ThingsCon Amsterdam 2017 \n\nDo not miss the NGI Meet Up @ ThingsCon on December 1st!\n \n\n \n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:IoT BCN Smart City Expo: Blockchain + IoT + Next Generation Internet (NGI)
DESCRIPTION:The next IoT Barcelona meetup (http://iot.barcelona) during the Smart City Expo 2017 in Barcelona. Actually this will be a mix of Blockchain and IoT together with Smart City Expo IoT companies\, all with fresh beers by our kind sponsor Moritz (http://moritz.com) and thethings.iO (https://thethings.io) \n  \n\nNGI Meetup with Marc Pous\, Co-presenters were Josep Sanjuàs about Blockchain\, Ethereum and Bitcoin and how to apply these technologies with the Internet of Things and John Tillema speaking about the hardware development of the Things Network. Rob van Kranenburg talked about the bigger picture – #IoT\, #AI\, #Robotics and the agency of Europe\, and the new funding schemes in ICT-24. \nA discussion that addressed the current political situation in Barcelona in a logical way ensuing from notions of transparency and information flow of the Digital Transition. The audience debated that it is strange that we want analytics and real time data streams in all networks that make up Internet of Things: \n\nBAN\, Body Area Network: Wearables\nLAN\, Local Area Network\, (Smart) Home\nWAN\, Wide Area Network\, (Connected) Car\nVWAN\, Very Wide Area Network\, (Smart) City\n\nbut in the most important of decision making areas: society\, we still allow a 19th century fully analogue model of people discussing in the basis of belief\, particular personal needs\, romantic territorial notions or ideologies tuned to pre-network archetypes. \nThe pragmatic cybernetics advocated by NGI Move was seen as a powerful potential bringer of calm\, serenity and opportunities in the particular Catalunya situation\, and for the EU as a 500 million zone as a whole. \n \n#IoT #AI #Robotics #ICT-24 #NGI4EU \n\nNGI – Towards a future Internet that better responds to the expectations of the citizens!\nNGI Move\, @NGI4EU brings you Salons and Meetings all over Europe to promote\, exchange and debate the Next Generation Internet movement. \nWhat should the Next Generation Internet look like? | Join the NGI-Movement @NGI4EU

SUMMARY:SMARTCITY EXPO 2017
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nMore than ever\, what happens in cities is shaping our world. The future of the world’s urban population will mostly be built in our lifetimes. The challenges we face are immense and only by working together will we be able to tackle them. \nOver the next few decades\, the continuing urbanization and overall growth of the world´s population is projected to add 2.5 billion people to the cities. All regions in the world are expected to urbanize further\, especially in Asia and Africa\, where the fastest growing cities are located. \nThe world is becoming even more interdependent and cities must act together across borders to deal with similar challenges: population growth\, climate change\, traffic congestion and pollution\, lack of adequate and affordable housing\, education and health\, the integration of refugees and migrants into urban life\, among many other pressing issues. \nEmpowerment has been defined as an intentional ongoing process which occurs in communities and organizations\, involves active participation\, critical reflection\, awareness and understanding\, and most difficult but important of all\, the access and control over important decisions and resources\, in a climate of mutual respect and caring. \nIn 2017 Smart City Expo World Congress intends to increase the presence of public and private organizations\, exhibitors and visitors from all over the world\, to keep generating synergies\, sharing knowledge\, provoking discussion\, promoting out of the box thinking and inspiring a call for actions. More than 16.000 professional visitors are expected\, with over 600 exhibitors\, along with high level representatives from more than 650 cities and over 400 experts and thought leaders. \nThe Congress gathers the most relevant experts and leaders of the world´s most innovative cities\, companies\, entrepreneurs\, start-ups\, research centers\, initiatives and solutions\, with strategies for a smarter and more sustainable urban world. At the Exhibition Area\, participants showcase their latest developments\, real solutions and products\, with technologies that are making concrete and lasting positive impacts on the lives of millions of people. \nBe part of this global community\, an ecosystem committed to creating powerful solutions\, the ones that will help to develop a more plural economy\, improve our quality of life and promote a healthier future.

SUMMARY:An NGI Move Salon: What's next for the Internet (of Things)
DESCRIPTION:An NGI Move Salon.\nSalon Nr 1: What’s next for the Internet (of Things)\nWhere is the Internet heading? What are the strengths and the weaknesses of its present form\, and what are the likely/possible/ideal next steps and directions of its development? \nWe are delighted to bring to you Rob van Kranenburg of NGI Move\, who was one of the first people ever to use the term “the Internet of Things”\, and who has recently started to run a series of “NGI Move Salons” around Europe\, aimed at (i) rethinking the functioning and the potentials of the Internet (in terms of technology\, governance\, sustainability)\, and (ii) inspiring novel public\, as well as private services & products relying on the next generation Internet. \nThe event is organized by early-stage hardware and IoT focused startup investor SmartWare.tech\, and will feature a panel discussion among: \n\nRob van Kranenburg of NGI Move (NGI standing for “Next Generation Internet”)\nÁkos Maróy\, CEO at Aero Glass \n\nPéter Langmár\, partner at SmartWare.tech and CEO at Lab.Coop\nModerator: Barnabás Málnay\, partner at SmartWare.tech and business developer at EIT Digital.\n\n\nAbout 20 people joined the meeting. After a general intro on IoT and the speed and scope of the digital transition we focused on the model and topics of ICT 24. General agreement that cascading funds is a good model\, also general ‘worry’ that purely professional process organizations without a vision would be able to occupy the 20% spaces. Thus\, it is important\, it was noted from the Latvian and Berlin side that some granularity and reflection is necessary patched on Funding Box or other type of incubator organizations. \nAlso raised: the perceived optimism around NGI able to not only defensively (GDPR) look at privacy for example but come up with radical new models to look at trust. \nIndividual Meetings make connections to potential consortium members for „ICT-24-2018-2019: Next Generation Internet – An Open Internet Initiative” \n#privacy #trust #decentralized #NGI4EU \n \n\nNGI – Towards a future Internet that better responds to the expectations of the citizens!\nNGI Move\, @NGI4EU brings you Salons and Meetings all over Europe to promote\, exchange and debate the Next Generation Internet movement. \nWhat should the Next Generation Internet look like? | Join the NGI-Movement @NGI4EU \n\n\nSmartWare.tech is a Hungary-based investor looking to partner with exceptionally brilliant\, motivated\, and growth-oriented early-stage hardware and IoT companies\, helping them get through the most critical early stages of their development trajectories. Besides providing them with pre-seed funding in the range of 20-200k EUR\, the Accelerator supports its portfolio companies primarily in (i) building effective MVPs and prototypes\, (ii) jumpstarting customer development\, (iii) designing and sharpening business models\, and (iv) preparing for raising follow-up funding.
