SUMMARY:TRUST IN DATA?
DESCRIPTION:TRUST IN DATA? Why social innovation needs digital.\nEUSES\, Mannheim\, Day 2  10-11 am CET \nSharing data – whether personal or not – is key to social innovation and digital competitiveness. Data processing innovation relates to Europe’s sustainable growth and digital jobs.  Before the internet era data collection was slow\, top-down\, and very little data was shared let alone queried.  The internet’s growth expands broadband access such that distributed computation happens in real time on connected devices near you.  Our web business model relies on voluntary sharing of data\, when the world of internet and big data is a lot more centralized and extractive than it ever was. A few aggregators act as global online gateways to products\, services and content; they capture most of the digital value chain. With Open Data and the GDPR\, we all realize that data privacy\, data ownership and data trust has social value above and beyond business as usual. Data governance matters to individuals as well as to society as a whole.  Social innovation requires maximising socio-economic benefits of ‘being connected’\, whilst minimising the centralized control power over the web. Data asymmetries and mistrust is a growing threat to social innovation. Can we agree on our digital rights\, common safety safeguards\, prevention of identity theft\, cybercrime\, data breaches\, manipulation and malware? Because digital inclusion won’t just happen by default. \nSpeakers:\n\nDr Loretta Anania\, European Commission Next Generation Internet Unit\, moderator\nDr Andrea Renda\, Director\, Centre for European Policy Studies\, Brussels\, Belgium \nSir Geoff Mulgan\, Professor of Collective Intelligence\, University College London\, UK\nDr Michelangelo Secchi\, Centre for Social Innovation\, Coimbra\, Portugal \nProf. Elizabeth Maria Renieris\, Director\, Cybersecurity and Technology Ethics Lab\, Harvard and Stanford Universities\, USA

SUMMARY:Making sense of a COVID-19 world
DESCRIPTION:NGI Forward Webinar – Making sense of a COVID-19 world: applying collective intelligence to big data.\nAs we at NGI Forward watched SARS-CoV-2 cut into our worlds\, we felt the same as everybody else. We feared for loved ones\, and for the long-term freedom and prosperity of our societies. We felt powerless\, and anxious in the face of uncertainty. We still do. \nBut\, at some point along the way\, we realized there was something we could do. We have in our midst a team of data scientists. When the pandemic hit\, Kristof and Michal were analysing trends in the evolution of Internet technology. Theirs is a big data method: they do text analysis on large repositories of academic papers\, news articles\, social media. We realized we could use the same method to investigate the virus and its companion illness. It would be like redirecting our searchlight onto a new target. \nSo we did that. In the space of only a few weeks\, Kristof and Michal came back with results\, neatly arranged in an interactive website. And that’s where we need your help. \nIn this webinar\, we will get together and question the data. Let’s look at them\, turn them around in our heads\, interrogate each other on their possible meaning. Let’s formulate hypotheses\, and see if we can think of ways to test them. Kristof and Michal can transform them into queries and visualization in real-time\, or close enough. In other words\, let’s augment big data analysis with collective intelligence methods. It will be a way for us to learn more about both COVID-19 and this particular big data methodology.

SUMMARY:European Big Data Value Forum (EBDVF)
DESCRIPTION:The European Big Data Value Forum (EBDVF) is the main event of the European Big Data and Data-Driven AI Research and Innovation community. In 2017 the Big Data Value Association (BDVA) and the European Commission (DG CNECT) joined forces to create this event fusion of the former EDF (European Data Forum) and the BDVA Summit. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis year EBDVF2019 is by BDVA\, in collaboration of the European Commission and VTT as the main local organizer. The European Big Data Value Forum 2019 aims to continue the success of previous editions\, where on average every year around 700 industry professionals\, business developers\, researchers\, and policymakers coming from 40 different countries attended the event. It will be organised in October and we expect 600 participants. The organiser committee of this event includes\, in addition to BDVA\, the EC and VTT\, multiple Finnish industrial\, Innovation and Research players as well as international companies and other research institutions. \nBDVA is an Industry-driven and fully self-financed an international non–for-profit organisation under Belgian law. BDVA has almost 200 members all over Europe with a well-balanced composition of large and small and medium-sized industries (over 30% of SMEs)\, as well as research and user organizations. The full list of members can be found here.
