SUMMARY:OpenForum Academy Symposium 2023
DESCRIPTION:As of today there is no academic conference covering questions relating to the social\, political and economic impact of Open Source. This hampers the linking of research agendas\, growth of the research area\, and the societal understanding of the value of the Open Source ecosystem as a whole. The OpenForum Academy Symposium (OFA) fills this space. \n\n\n\nAfter a successful first\, virtual edition in 2021\, the OFA Symposium 2023 will bring together an interdisciplinary set of researchers\, practitioners\, and policymakers from around the world to Berlin\, in order to explore the transformative power of Open Source Software and Hardware. \n\n\n\nAt the OFA Symposium\, we will examine the social\, political\, and economic implications of open source. We will explore how open source is changing the way we work\, communicate\, and interact with each other\, and how it is shaping the future of technology and society. \n\n\n\nThe Symposium will feature a diverse and group of speakers and participants\, including researchers\, policymakers\, developers\, and activists. We believe that the OFA Symposium will provide a unique and valuable opportunity for learning\, collaboration\, and networking. \n\n\n\nWe hope you will join us for this exciting event\, and look forward to exploring the social\, political\, and economic impact of Open Source together. \n\n\n\nThe OFA Symposium 2023 will be hosted by TU Berlin

SUMMARY:NGI Panel: Communities\, Digital Rights and the Future of the Internet
DESCRIPTION:Join us on January 25th for a 60-minute online panel on Digital Rights within the NGI project. Discover grassroots communities’ priorities and challenges in shaping the internet’s future. Explore ways to create a more inclusive\, human-centric internet. Community leaders from Access Now\, Missions Publiques\, Algorights\, and Wikimedia will share their visions for a fair future of internet. \n\n\n\nIn parallel to the activities carried out as part of the NGI program\, more and more grassroot communities are being established to pursue and influence the development of the internet of the future. Their vision is often aligned with the NGI principles and points towards a more safe\, sustainable\, fair\, and human-centric digital environment\, with open source and digital common at its core. But many of their requests\, learnings and lines of action may not be evident at the policy level\, and those can be very relevant add-ons to plan and shape the future NGI lines of action by following an inclusive\, grounded\, bottom-up approach. \n\n\n\nThis panel is proposed to learn about the priorities and challenges that these communities are currently facing in an attempt to combine the resources\, tools and solutions made available by the NGI ecosystem\, and the capacities\, energy\, skills and networks of these grassroot communities.  \n\n\n\nThe session aims at embedding a societal and community perspective within the NGI\, thus extending its scope while exploring synergies and potentially collaborating in future initiatives. It will pave the way for co-envisioning and co-designing scenarios of desirable futures enabled by the internet.     \n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n11:00 – 11:10 | Welcome and introductionA. SUMMARY:Workshop on Open Source key areas for Digital Autonomy
DESCRIPTION:Three Directorate-Generals from the European Commission (Connect\, DIGIT and GROW) are joining forces to organize a physical event in Brussels to discuss Open Source in four key areas for Digital Autonomy. \n\n\n\nThe study on the impact of Open Source in the EU economy  confirmed the relevance of this subject. The twelve workshops organized in December 2022 by the European Commission have served to pave the way to relevant political initiatives. This time\, the Commission is focusing on the areas that are prone to be the most relevant for Open Source. \n\n\n\nThe first area is Cybersecurity and trustworthiness of ICT systems\, which is of crucial importance in today’s Digital Europe. The second session will elaborate the transformation of the automotive design towards a connected\, carbon-neutral and customer-centric transport with the Software-defined vehicle(SDV). The third panel will analyze how to be successful and manage the challenges in implementing open source projects and solutions in European public services. The final session will develop how to provide and use as much as possible Open Source for developing Data Spaces. \n\n\n\nWorkshops will benefit from the viewpoints of panelists recognized as experts in the workshop topic.

SUMMARY:EU Open Source Policy Summit 2024
DESCRIPTION:The 10-year anniversary of the OpenForum Europe’s EU Open Source Policy Summit is taking place on 2 February 2024\, just before FOSDEM. The Summit is the world’s largest assembly of policymakers\, Open Source businesses\, community members\, developers\, foundations\, and experts engaged in digital policy. \n\n\n\nThe overarching policy message of this conference is an important one: strategic use of open technologies and Open Source in particular play an important role in solving digital policy challenges. The opportunities “openness” brings come in the form of decreasing vendor lock-in\, increasing the resilience of the systems in question\, while also boosting competition and innovation.  \n\n\n\nOpen Source has reached the level of policy maturity that brought significant attention to topics relating to open technologies in the Cyber Resilience Act and the AI Act\, the need for openness for interoperability in the Interoperable Europe Act\, and other policy initiatives around the globe.

SUMMARY:Webinar - Open source CPU and SoC design: The flow\, the challenges and a perspective
DESCRIPTION:About the webinar \n\n\n\nWhile not being the first free ISA (Instruction Set Architecture)\, RISC-V recently made CPU design much more accessible. Consequently\, in recent years\, many projects emerged to develop free and open-source CPU and SoC designs. \n\n\n\nThrough the lens of the SpinalHDL\, VexRiscv and NaxRiscv projects\, this webinar will introduce the kind of tooling which is involved in designing a CPU and deploying it on hardware\, the related challenges\, the similarities and differences between hardware and software open-source\, how the industry interact with open-source hardware\, as well as the difficulties that the scale of such project creates. \n\n\n\nAbout Charles Papon \n\n\n\nCharles Papon graduated in 2014 with a background which mixes both hardware and software skills. His open-source hardware contributions started in 2015 with the creation of SpinalHDL\, a tool made to push forward the way hardware description is done by mixing Scala and internal domain specific languages. Then\, as a demonstrator of the technology\, he initiated the VexRiscv project (2017\, a CPU softcore). Because of its success as a CPU softcore\, VexRiscv became the main SpinalHDL driver. After a few years of VexRiscv development\, the need to push the boundary in the softcore space initiated the NaxRiscv project in 2021\, which provided much higher performances via multi-issue and out-of-order execution capabilities as well as Debian capabilities.\nHis contributions to those projects were made as an individual\, receiving occasional funding by either providing on site training\, consultancy or feature addition.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR-Tech talk with bunnie on IRIS: an open hardware project to verify chips
DESCRIPTION:Andrew “bunnie” Huang on silicon inspection\n\n\n\nThursday May 2\, 2024. 11.00 – 12.00 CEST (Brussels time) / 17.00 SGT (Singapore time)Location: Big Blue Button platform: https://vc.ngi-0.eu/rooms/ahq-y96-uhs-jka/join \n\n\n\nHardware hacker bunnie is working on IRIS (Infra-Red\, In-Situ) inspection of silicon\, a project to facilitate the non-destructive verification of silicon chips. The goal of the project is to give people a tangible reason to trust their chips. In this webinar he’ll give a short talk about the project but will leave most of the time for a Q&A as he is interested to hear what people think about IRIS. \n\n\n\nChip inspection often requires removing or even destroying the chip. With IRIS bunnie has developed a method using infrared light to inspect chips without having to unmount them. The aim of the project is to create a set of techniques for the hardware world that fill the analogous role of “digital signature verification” used on software packages: a ubiquitous method to establish trust in an artifact\, after it has been delivered to the user.

SUMMARY:10th ETSI/IQC Quantum Safe Cryptography Conference
DESCRIPTION:ETSI and the Institute for Quantum Computing are pleased to announce the 10th ETSI/IQC Quantum Safe Cryptography Conference\, taking place in Singapore on 14-16 May 2024. The event will be hosted by the Centre for Quantum Technologies\, National University of Singapore. \n\n\n\nJoin us in marking this important milestone by contributing with a talk\, proposing a panel discussion or simply coming along to learn more about this rapidly evolving field and meet the key players behind these important maturing technologies. \n\n\n\nWe increasingly rely on cyber technologies\, and hence are ever more vulnerable to cyber-attacks. As progress toward a cryptographically relevant quantum computer advances\, these attack vectors grow and the imperative to prepare for a transition to quantum secure technologies continues to increase. In response\, standardization efforts are accelerating; the initial NIST PQC standards are due in 2024\, and our working groups here at ETSI are active in evaluating these and how they will fit into existing protocols\, applications and public-key infrastructures. Hence solutions are starting to become commercially available\, best practices are being developed and shared\, and the ability to transition in a secure and cost-effective way continues to increase. This is a continually evolving and complex journey and much remains to be understood and navigated. \n\n\n\nThis event was designed for members of the business\, government\, and research communities with a stake in cryptographic standardization to facilitate the knowledge exchange and collaboration required to transition cyber infrastructures and business practices to make them safe in an era with quantum computers. It aims to showcase both the most recent developments from industry and government and cutting-edge potential solutions coming out of the most recent research. \n\n\n\nConference Objectives: \n\n\n\n\nShowcase recent research\, initiatives and standardization activities worldwide\n\n\n\nBring together key players from industry\, academia\, government and standardization bodies\n\n\n\nFacilitate networking and relationship-building opportunities\n\n\n\nEncourage discussion and critical thinking around pertinent topics\n\n\n\nProvide actionable steps and takeaways for novices wanting to begin their quantum-safe migration\n\n\n\n\nWhy should one attend? \n\n\n\nThe first NIST standards for PQC will be released in 2024 and therefore there is no reason to delay your quantum-safe migration further. This conference is a perfect opportunity to determine your next steps\, learn from experts and network others going through the process. Nowhere else can you encounter the latest research in such an actionable way\, with specific tracks for both executives and technical experts.

SUMMARY:NGI COMMONS WORKSHOP 2024: CO-CREATING DIGITAL COMMONS PRIORITIES FOR EUROPE’S DIGITAL DECADE
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever thought in detail about what a more open Internet might look like? Have you wondered how governments might work more in the open alongside the rest of society? Or perhaps you’ve considered what it might look like to more intentionally co-create Europe’s digital future by developing shared\, public interest digital resources and infrastructures? \n\n\n\nIf so\, the NGI Commons project would like to invite you to join a unique one-day workshop in Amsterdam\, in the lead up to the PublicSpaces Conference 2024. This exploratory workshop will inform participants about what digital commons are and their increasing relevance in the European digital policy landscape\, as well as work with attendees to co-create priorities for digital commons policymaking during the rest of Europe’s digital decade. The event will also raise awareness around opportunities for funding for digital commons projects in the Next Generation Internet (NGI) ecosystem. \n\n\n\nThe workshop is an input into the research and policy work of the NGI Commons Initiative\, with the outputs being summarized in a detailed policy report that will inform future activities of the initiative. In the morning\, we will catch participants up to speed on digital commons policies\, the Next Generation Internet (NGI) Initiative\, and the state of the digital commons ecosystem through interactive presentations and seminars. In the afternoon\, we will engage participants to brainstorm priorities\, topics\, and technologies that could be of relevance to future digital commons policymaking in the EU. \n\n\n\nThroughout the day\, we will consider questions like: \n\n\n\n\nWhich ongoing initiatives are underway in Europe that seek to impact the policy landscape for digital commons?\n\n\n\nWhich European values and principles are key to uphold through new policies around digital commons?\n\n\n\nWhat should the future of the digital commons landscape look like in Europe and how might that differ according to the needs of different groups (e.g.\, national governments\, civil society\, private sector\, development partners\, etc)?

SUMMARY:PublicSpaces Conference 2024: Taking Back the Internet!
DESCRIPTION:On 6 and 7 June\, PublicSpaces and Waag Futurelab will organise the fourth edition of the PublicSpaces conference with the theme ‘Taking Back the Internet’. The two-day programme will take place at Pakhuis de Zwijger\, Amsterdam. Through panels\, keynotes\, roundtable sessions\, lectures\, art and culture\, we will work our way towards an internet where we set the rules collectively.  \n\n\n\nIn 2024\, most digital services and platforms are owned by a few Big Tech companies. This centralisation of power does not align with how the internet was conceived. It creates society-disrupting problems. From privacy violations and influencing election results to discrimination by biased algorithms\, Big Tech’s monopoly affects everyone.
