SUMMARY:Internet of Opportunity: Will the Internet Benefit All Europeans?
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) and European Committee of the Regions\nAbout Regional Development Dialogues\nThis conference is part of a global series of Internet development conferences organized by the Internet Society with the aim of furthering the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that aim at tackling the world’s main development challenges by 2030. Previous Regional Internet Development Dialogues have been held in Asia Pacific\, Latin America & Caribbean and Africa. \nFormat & Audience\nThis event will gather participants from government\, local authorities\, business\, and civil society to discuss the development of the Internet and its relation to economic growth\, digital economy and social inclusion with a focus on European regions and local communities. The event will be divided into four thematic sessions – jobs\, innovation\, remote access and skills. The objective is to highlight success stories from across Europe and to encourage the European regions and communities to make them most out of the Internet opportunity. \nSetting the scene\nThe Internet is transforming Europe’s rich cities. The metropolises benefit from high speed connections and are the site of most start-ups and new tech jobs. But what are the consequences of this transformation? And what will happen to less populated regions and disadvantaged urban fringes? These will be the guiding questions for this day-long event organized by the Internet Society\, CEPS\, and the Committee of the Regions. \nLeading policymakers and industry representatives will be on hand to present research and recommendations\, with CEPS presenting a new paper on “The Internet and Jobs – A Giant Opportunity” analysing the current trends in Europe. We will debate whether the Internet is killing jobs – or whether it could create new long distance positions. DESCRIPTION:Blockchains as a Component of the Next Generation Internet\nBlockchains are best known as the technological underpinning for the Bitcoin cryptocurrency highlighted for its potential to revolutionise the financial world. These are valuable starting points\, but to be sure that the NGI initiative is and continues to be effective\, these concerns need to be explored alongside further emerging challenges and opportunities. \nExperience has shown that the Internet evolves through widely adopted experimentation approaches that engage active users and communities rather than through purely technological advances invented in closed laboratories. The NGI initiative needs to understand how progressive digitisation and the evolution of the Internet influences these experimentation approaches as well as Digital Innovation Networks\, how they all can combine to shape the process of innovation itself\, and how successful products and services can emerge as a result. \nThe Digital Innovation Networks Forum 2017 aimed to create a strongly connected pan-European ecosystem that collectively understands what is needed to build digital innovation networks for the NGI\, and how they can operate to address the major challenges for society as a result of progressive digitisation and the evolution of the Internet. \nThis was achieved by gathering leading Internet Researchers and Innovators to share their NGI vision\, opportunities and concerns through presentations\, debates and interactive round tables. He is an author of 32 scientific publications. In years 2011-13 he was a Principal Investigator in grant Preludium funded by Polish National Science Centre. This year he has obtained Leader grant – VII edition – founded by the Polish National Centre for Research and Development (3rd position on a ranking list). DESCRIPTION:NGI BoF at TNC17: From FIRE to the Next Generation Internet Experimentation\nIn current times\, where most of world economies are driven by innovation and where changes in technology and culture in societies are happening rapidly\, the European Commission through several initiatives and organizational structures plays a relevant role by promoting experimental facilities addressing the challenges for bringing revenue to the experimentation facilities and for activating business markets in Europe and world-wide. Since its introduction in the FP7 programme\, the Future Internet Research & Experimentation (FIRE) initiative continues being a critical pillar of the Net Futures within the Horizon 2020. At the heart of the overall initiative there are projects establishing hubs for technology innovation in key areas\, e.g. advanced networking\, IoT\, data\, cloud infrastructures\, and their use within a wide range of diverse business and application domains\, e.g. smart city\, healthcare\, marine\, land and air applications. \nThe NGI BoF at TNC17 provides an insight into the transition process from former FIRE initiative to NGI\, seen as the evolution of FIRE towards the achievement of the Horizon 2020 vision and beyond into the next Framework Programme spanning across 2020-2025. The session is addressed at infrastructure players from the NREN community to stimulate a discussion how transition from FIRE to NGI creates new opportunities and challenges for the NRENs in the near future.
