SUMMARY:Datathon
DESCRIPTION:Datathon – The future of the Internet\nHow does it work?\nParticipants will form small groups. Each group will choose a challenge and will be able to use one or more of the datasets made available by the Engineroom project\, including data from Reddit\, Wikipedia and online news.\nStarting from some question according to its interests\, each group will apply the methods of data analysis and visualization it finds more convenient to extract knowledge from the datasets provided or any other available data source. SUMMARY:Using AI to Fight Disinformation in European Elections
DESCRIPTION:As the European Union readies for its upcoming elections\, accelerating the fight against fake news has become a top priority. Many policymakers are concerned about attempts to covertly use online platforms to insert propaganda and incendiary messages into public discourse in European democracies by targeting particular groups with disinformation campaigns. One powerful tool in the fight against fake news is artificial intelligence (AI)\, which can be used to automatically detect and respond to this content as well as empower users with the ability to verify the veracity of claims. A number of leading tech companies\, including Facebook\, Google\, and Twitter\, have committed to self-regulatory standards and developed a code of practice on disinformation\, and the European Commission is evaluating the extent to which automated tools and self-regulation can counter fake news\, without introducing new distortions to public discourse or stifling freedom of speech. \nJoin the Center for Data Innovation for a conversation about how the public and private sectors can work together to accelerate the use of AI to combat fake news. \nConfirmed Speakers: \n\nPaolo Cesarini\, Head of Unit\, Media Convergence & Social Media\, DG CONNECT\, European Commission\nEline Chivot\, Senior Policy Analyst\, Center for Data Innovation\nClara Hanot\, Advocacy and Fundraising Officer\, EU DisinfoLab\nJens-Henrik Jeppesen\, Director of European Affairs\, Center for Democracy and Technology\nMilan Zubicek\, Public Policy & Government Relations Manager\, Google

SUMMARY:NGI @ FOSDEM19
DESCRIPTION:Next Generation Internet initiative – Year Zero\nCome work for the internet on privacy\, trust\, search & discovery\n Track: Lightning Talks | Room: H.2215 (Ferrer)\nLast year during a FOSDEM keynote Michiel Leenaars\, director of strategy at NLnet foundation\, introduced the Next Generation Internet initiative together with member of the European parliament Marietje Schaake. NGI aims to be the first concerted effort to put significant public funding to hands-on work to really fix the internet. Meanwhile\, the project is on its way. \n \nOn December 1st 2018\, the first open calls opened with funding for independent researchers and developers working on free and open source projects in the area of privacy and trust enhancing technologies and on search\, discovery and discoverability. In this talk Leenaars\, project lead of NGI Zero that is currently offering 11.2 millioneuro in grants\, will tell everything you need to know about the various open calls that you can apply for. With grants ranging from 5.000 euro to 50.000 euro available for research\, development and engineering effort NGI Zero aims to lead the push toward the post-Snowden internet we want. \nFrom the humble four nodes of the ARPANET that were bootstrapped half a century ago this year\, until today\, the internet has grown at a breathtaking pace. But while the technology has gradually penetrated every aspect of our lives\, it has become clear that not all is well and at least some part of its growth has spiraled out of control. In fact\, web inventor Tim Berners-Lee has recently called the current state of his creation (and by extension the larger internet) “dystopian”. \nThe internet of especially the last fifteen years has brought about undesirable concentration of power (“winner takes all”)\, and while it has given us many good things has also caused loss of human agency in many other realms. Internet has given the world totalitarianism the likes of which it has never seen\, has enabled political manipulation at unprecedented scale affection the lives of hundreds of millions of people. Internet has eroded the private sphere to the point where it has been declared dead\, and the mantra of ‘big data’ and business analytics frame the discussion we should be having. Due to its open global nature and the wholly new types of economic dominance neither internet users nor governments both have an adequate answer against dominant super-actors. How dow we stop large scale abuse of power. Have the web and the internet become “anti-human” as Berners-Lee posits? And what can we do about it? \nThe internet is not going to fix itself. Many of the more promising efforts in this realm have been ‘bottom up’ efforts from individuals or small teams\, but these isolated efforts certainly have missed critical mass to actually scale up and change the mainstream internet and the commercial landscape where powerful actors are fully vested in the current course. The Next Generation Internet initiative aims to bring those efforts together\, strengthen and unite them and turn them into something that can be deployed across the whole internet. Let there be no doubt about it: fixing the internet is an insane ‘moonshot++’ effort: the internet is the largest technical structure man has ever made\, and the task at hand is to vastly improve its very operating fabric with > 3 billion people using it on a daily basis. \nAnd yet we have to: fixing the internet is essential to safeguard our economy and create a more resilient and robust infrastructure. And even more importantly we also depend on it to upholding our way of life. How the internet\, the web and the mobile ecosystems work directly impacts our human values. Crafting a better internet is essential for maintaining basic human rights such as privacy for the near-future Europe. \nSurely\, a larger political agenda of Europe should be an integral part of the approach – in some cases regulating the most predatory behaviour from bad actors might be the only thing left to put the genie back in the bottle and to restore health back to the internet. However\, it is also clear that a significant part of the solution lies in the hands of technologists. NGI Zero is probably the first funding programme of its scale that is entirely based on the principles of free/libre\, open source software. We need smart and resourceful people that come and work for the internet. Could this be you? In this talk Michiel Leenaars will explain how the funding works\, and how NGI Zero deals with important issues like localisation\, accessibility\, security\, packaging\, documentation\, responsible disclosure and more. Come and work for the internet too!

SUMMARY:INFO SESSION ON ICT-31: EU-US collaboration on NGI
DESCRIPTION:INFO SESSION ON ICT-31: EU-US collaboration on NGI\nThis “EU-US collaboration on NGI” information session focuses on Research and Innovation Actions (RIAs): \nCommon experiments by EU/US teams on emerging topics for the Next Generation Internet / Tomorrow’s Internet programmes on top of EU/US experimental platforms. \nFor grants awarded under this topic for Research and Innovation actions beneficiaries may provide support to third parties as described in part K of the General Annexes of the Work Programme. The support to third parties can only be provided in the form of grants. The respective options of Article 15.1 and Article 15.3 of the Model Grant Agreement will be applied. Only organisations established in the EU and associated countries will be eligible for European Commission funding. \nThe Commission considers that proposals for Research and Innovation actions requesting a contribution from the EU of EUR 3.5 million would allow this specific challenge to be addressed appropriately. As a reference\, 80% of the EU funding should be allocated to financial support for the third parties. Nonetheless\, this does not preclude submission and selection of proposals requesting other amounts. \nThe agenda for the session:\n\nIntroduction | Georgios Tselentis\, European Commission\nICT-31 mechanisms and introduction to the topic | Georgios Tselentis and Stefano Foglietta\, European Commission\n2 min pitches by possible proposers: find partners\, present idea\, have feedbacks\, …\nQ&A

SUMMARY:Webinar: Media & Content Hyper-personalisation
DESCRIPTION:Webinar: Media & Content Hyper-personalisation\nWednesday 14.11.2018\, 15:00 CET\nThe European society is based on diversity and only by giving a broad and flexible response\, with the assistance of the hyper-personalization paradigm\, will this diversity be a resource and not a restriction. \nThe global trend towards the extreme differentiation of offerings in products and services cannot be foreign to the sector\, from the recommendation of content to the integration of the final consumer in the design processes. Hyper-personalization through very precise targeting not only ensures the best potential impact but in parallel increases the added value of products and services. \nHyper-personalization technology will allow the gap between providers’ business needs and consumers’ desires to be closed\, allowing consumers to enjoy an increasing range of products whilst service providers battle against the fragmentation of retailing and media across multiple channels and platforms. Appropriate control should be given to consumers to empower them to tailor and tune how hyper-personalization works to meet their needs. \nOne of the key challenges will be to give back the control of personal data to the end users. These data are key for hyper-personalisation but should be under the control of the end user instead of being managed by each service provider with a global inconsistency. \nJoin with Pierre-Yves Danet\, Orange\, to learn more about Media & Content Hyper-personalisation. \nParticipation in the webinar is free of charge\, but requires registration by 14 November 2018\, 12:00 CET (150 attendees).\nPlease register at: https://media-content-hyper-personalisation.eventbrite.co.uk \nBy registering you accept that your user name and any chat questions or comments you share in the webinar are publicly visible to other participants and that the webinar\, including these personal data\, is recorded; the recording is publicly shared on the NGI.eu website and Social Media.\nRegistered participants will receive an access link in the confirmation email. \n\nPierre-Yves DANET graduated from a high French engineer school EFREI\, and joined Orange (France Telecom) in 1992\, taking responsibility of a research group on ISDN. He set up a lab on Home Automation and then moved to the application server research domain. In 2005\, at the creation of the NEM European Technology platform\, he represented Orange at the steering board\, and was appointed vice-chair in charge of Strategy since 2007. In 2010\, he received the Senior grade of SEE (Société de l’Electricité\, de l’Electronique et des Technologies de l’Information et de la Communication). Since 2013\, he is in charge of collaborative research – Europe at Orange Labs. He is also the vice-chair of the FIWARE Mundus committee\, which has the objective to evangelise FIWARE outside Europe. He also leads the ETNO Research & Innovation group and represents Orange at the AIOTI. He has been recently appointed as one of the French contact points for the Next Generation Internet initiative. \nMore information about the NGI Expert Group.

SUMMARY:Hackathon: Next Generation Internet Data Sprint
DESCRIPTION:According to a legend\, the first attempt to send two letters by the Internet crashed the whole system. Almost 50 years later\, the internet has come to play an enormous role in our lives\, but we still face huge challenges: How to tackle Russian bots? How to scope with filter bubbles and echo chambers? Are platforms digital monopolists? \nThe DELab team\, together with partners Nesta (UK) and EURECAT (ES)\, participate in the EU ENGINEROOM project\, funded by the European Commission. As part of this work\, the project is developing a methodology based on cutting-edge data science methods\, which help us identify the latest trends and emerging technologies in the internet space\, as well as analyse the most pressing social issues the net faces today. \nWe would like to invite you to the Next Generation Internet Data Sprint to think about the future of Internet with us! \nThe Data Sprint will take place on 9-10 November at the Faculty of Economic Sciences. During the hackathon you will have the opportunity to cooperate with experienced data-scientists from the consortium (Nesta\, Eurecat\, Delab) and be among the first to get to experiment with our data sets and new methodologies – from doing text-mining analyse to building data visualisations\, using web data sources like Reddit\, Wikipedia\, Ars Technica or Reuters. \nWe will work in small groups of 3 to 4 students\, attractive awards are available for the best and most creative projects. This is also an opportunity to have some of your work showcased to the European Commission. For inspirations check out some of our preliminary results: https://ngi.delabapps.eu/. \nPractical information: \n* 9 – 10 November: We start on Friday 17:00 at WNE UW with intro to the assignments. The coding sprint will be from Saturday from 9:00 until 20:00. Pizza and energetic drinks will be provided to boost creativity. \n* Event’s website: http://www.delab.uw.edu.pl/pl/ngi_hackathon/ \n* Do not feel like a master of coding? Nothing lost\, we invite everyone with basis of Python (Python 3 is the optimal tool for the hackathon)\, R or Tableau. If you have no experience in coding\, but interested in social challenges of technology\, your contribution will be highly valued as well. \n* We reserve the right to close registration after reaching the limit of 40 students. In the case of a high number of applications\, admissions will be decided based on the results of the short survey during registration. \n* Best teams will receive awards! \nRegister now! https://goo.gl/forms/ucEfNxMmuqal2Bf32

SUMMARY:NGI SALON @ WEB SUMMIT LISBON
DESCRIPTION:You have ten years to save the Planet – A Millennials’ narrative for the Next Generation Internet\nNGI Salon @ Web Summit Lisbon\nSocial Innovation Village delegation night\nDate: 7th November 2018 | 18:00-19:30\nLocation: Casa do Impacto \nModerators:\nMarta Arniani (futuribile / curating futures)\nJennifer Veldman (DataWatchers) \n  \nMillennials form the generation that was born in an analog world and are the early adopters of the digital one. They have experienced at a young age the innocent and empowering era of the internet\, an age of knowledge distribution and new opportunities arising with the mass diffusion of the web. An era of supposedly endless natural resources. The Internet and the digital revolution bring immensely powerful tools\, yet their effects on society and the Planet – were mostly unanticipated: for most of their lifespan they have just been considered useful tools and economy drivers. In truth\, tools are still in early adoption years. The same as when the car went through years of modulation (creating new traffic rules\, installing airbags\, seat belts and so on). Ideas of how we use and should use online digital devices are only starting to be framed. If we want a digital future that reflects the needs of society and environment\, we need to think\, discuss and act NOW. We argue that society and environment are strongly intertwined\, as values of the first impact directly on the Planet. Climate is the stone guest at the innovation table. As much as the NGI advocates for a human centric vision against technology-centric efficiency paradigms\, we think this vision should be placed in the natural ecosystem\, the place we live in. \nMotivations\, hopes\, achievements: digging into solutions for major societal challenges\, this salon aims at rebuilding a Millennials narrative that focuses not on how the internet has gone wrong\, but how we believe it could be improved and contribute to a better society\, thriving in a rich natural ecosystem. It will engage with Millennials from the Web Summit Social Innovation Village and local social innovation networks who bear with them that positive and emancipatory outlook on technology that Millennials should be remembered for. \nInfo and inquires: Marta Arniani: marta (at) futuribile.org \n

SUMMARY:NGI @ GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES 2018
DESCRIPTION:A Next Generation Internet to serve the #NextGeneration\n\nWorkshop with Rob van Kranenburg (NGI Move)\, Tom De Block (Blockchain Solution Architect Settlemint) and Paul Malone (SpeakNGI.eu)\n\nThis workshop will be organised around two distinct elements. The first element will be an interactive session deisgned to get input from the civil society participants into the EC vision for re-imagining the future internet driven by human values. The second element will provide a description of how an internet technology can serve civil society organisations.\n\nIn the first part of this workshop\, we will seek to gain input from participants to get an understanding of how the future internet can be re-imagined to serve civil society organisations and their communities.\n\nWe seek input from participants to the following:\n\nHow does the current internet not serve global citizens?\nWhat are the challenges that need to be addressed?\nCan we prioritise these challenges?\nHow can the future internet support engagement of the #NextGeneration?\n\n\nThis consultation will commence during the workshop and will be continued throughout the conference via an online consultation platform provided by the NGI Initiative.\nIn the second part of the workshop\, we will briefly touch upon the funding possibilities with in NGI.eu for innovative work on decentralized data management\, trust and the expansion of the terms privacy and security into privacies and securities.\n\nWe will set the scope for the case of blockchain in the context of civil society and NGO by looking briefly at top Charity ICO projects\, ACT\, an Ethereum blockchain based social action platform supposedly ‘more responsive and efficient than non-governmental organizations (NGOs)\, Alice\, a platform that brings transparency to social funding through blockchain technology\, and the press release of the contest sponsored by IBM and Global Citizen\, for a charity donation blockchain platform: “If we are going to solve societal issues such as extreme poverty or infectious disease\, we need to make sure that every cause is getting the money they were promised\, especially from the world’s most impactful donor group: federal governments.”\n\nWe will then discuss as hands on as possible a productive and fitting use case the blockchain company Settlemint is working on.\n\nLinks:\nhttps://ngi.eu\nhttps://consultation.ngi.eu\nhttps://awards.ngi.eu\nhttps://settlemint.com\nhttps://www.trackico.io/1/?category=charity\nhttps://news.bitcoin.com/pr-act-ngo-2-0-bringing-power-back-people/\nhttps://cointelegraph.com/news/ibm-and-ngo-global-citizen-announce-contest-for-blockchain-charity-platform\nhttps://alice.si

SUMMARY:NGI @ RHODES FORUM 2018
DESCRIPTION:“DIGITAL FUTURE OF HUMANITY: IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS ON ECONOMY\, CYBER SECURITY AND SOCIAL VALUES”\nThe globalizing world is characterized by progress of new technologies that have strong impact on jobs\, life conditions\, communication and security systems and ethical standards. Advancement within Internet of Things\, Blockchain\, Artificial Intelligence\, Big Data\, Fintech and Insurtech provide conditions for sustainable growth\, could grant open access to resources\, information and knowledge. But these developments could have profound implications for economic inequality and controversial effects on social life. \nNew technologies could be seen as providing substantial benefits\, but also pose risks for societies. More important than ever is a discourse on the balance between technical revolution\, new markets\, political systems\, emerging world order\, individual social benefits and data and identity protection. The panel will debate ways and competing concepts how to ensure reasonable and appropriate application of new technologies with participation of key stakeholders. \nMain points for Panel Discussion:\n\nDigital sovereignty technologies and cybersecurity in the era of cyberwars and global insecurity\nDebating trust in institutions such as banks\, governments\, global corporations\, charities and the media in the digital age by year 2030\nChallenges and opportunities of digitalization for political systems\nThe advancements of Artificial Intelligence and the future of societies\nExploring new kind of infrastructural violence: “Fake news\,” botnets\, internet abuse\, algorithmic content etc.\nHow is technological change impacting economic inequality and what can be done to use technology for the common good\nMobile communication: the consequences for concentration\, memories\, analytical and critical thinking\nThe digital divide and what chances have IT-underskilled people in the digital society\n\nModerators (TBC):\nMr Dimitris PSARRAKIS\, Economic & Monetary Policy Advisor\, European Parliament\nProf. Jens Wendland\, Head DOC RI Digitization Research \nhttps://doc-research.org/forum/ \n

SUMMARY:NGI KEYNOTE @ WORLD IOT EXPO 2018
DESCRIPTION:IoT\, NG and pragmatic cybernetics\nInternet of Things Expo\, Huihaiwan Intelligent Sensing Forum\nWuxi Xinhu Pullman\nThe main focus of the talk is in three areas: infrastructure\, services and entitlements. \nInfrastructure needs to be balanced between capabilities in the Cloud (data-lakes and AI) and edge (5G)\, between intricate and complex semi-autonomous to autonomous self-healing systems and local repairability to ensure urban resilience. This requires attention on two very different but equally important skilling strategies. \nInfrastructure support services.\nA service is any operation that supports either machines or people in their wellbeing and abilities to build a meaningful and cooperative existence. This thus entails the entire trajectory from BAN- to VWAN; BAN (body\, wearables)\, LAN (home\, smart services to the home)\, WAN (mobility in general from bike to connected car and plane)\, and VWAN (the very wide area network; the smart city). \nBlockchain as well as connectivity itself have become commodities and are thus services in this view. Services support everyday activities. Entitlements are new entities as synchronous and fixed identities cannot support services in a hybrid infrastructure. A balance between anonymity (in federated sets of identities that are tied to services such as shopping\, dating\, recovering from illness….) and accountability (in stable sets of relationships of behavior and activity) for processes\, machines\, products and people in wallets\, is vital to create popular support from all generations for a new type of governance. \nEntitlements support services.\nExtelligence\, a term by Ian Stewart and Jack Cohen\, a biologist and mathematician\, is “the cultural capital that is available to us in the form of external media (e.g. tribal legends\, folklore\, nursery rhymes\, books\, videotapes\, CD-ROMs\, etc.)” In an information-rich\, digitally connected world\, where much of the knowledge and tools that we make use of are outside our heads there will be a need to develop new communication ‘senses’ that allow us to manage and make use of the enormous amount of information we will be confronted by. This will lead to the development and adoption of new and different types of human-computer interfaces and different ways of communicating with technology. We know this as deep learning and machine learning; artificial intelligence. \nBut this is the superficial reading of extelligence. Ian Stewart and Jack Cohen\, “regard the ‘complicity’ of extelligence and intelligence as fundamental to the development of consciousness in evolutionary terms for both the species and the individual. ‘Complicity’ is a combination of complexity and simplicity\, and Cohen and Stewart use it to express the interdependent relationship between knowledge-inside-one’s-head and knowledge-outside-one’s-head that can be readily accessed.” (idem) \nhttp://en.wiotexpo.cn
