SUMMARY:Data To Go: An FTC Workshop on Data Portability
DESCRIPTION:The Federal Trade Commission will host a public workshop on September 22\, 2020\, to examine the potential benefits and challenges to consumers and competition raised by data portability. \nData portability refers to the ability of consumers to move data – such as\, emails\, contacts\, calendars\, financial information\, health information\, favorites\, friends or content posted on social media – from one service to another or to themselves. In addition to providing benefits to consumers\, data portability may benefit competition by allowing new entrants to access data they otherwise would not have so that they can grow competing platforms and services. At the same time\, there may be challenges to implementing or requiring data portability. For example\, data that consumers want to port may include information about others\, such as friends’ photos and comments. How should this data be treated? How can the data be transferred securely? Who has responsibility for ensuring that data portability is technically feasible? Does mandatory data access or data sharing affect companies’ incentives to invest in data-driven products and services? \n \nData portability is a timely topic. Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation and California’s Consumer Privacy Act both include data portability requirements\, and companies serving customers in Europe and California have already begun providing consumers with the right to port their data. In addition\, the UK’s Open Banking initiative and US banking laws requiring that financial information be provided to consumers in an electronic format\, are encouraging data portability in the financial sector\, including the development of APIs to facilitate transfer of data to consumers and among financial institutions. Major technology companies Apple\, Facebook\, Google\, Microsoft\, and Twitter have created the Data Transfer Project with the goal of creating an open-source\, service-to-service data portability platform. The Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of National Coordinator for Health Information Technology has finalized rules to facilitate portability of health data. And industry and lawmakers have discussed including data portability as a component of any comprehensive federal privacy legislation. \nThe workshop seeks to bring together stakeholders — including industry representatives\, economists\, consumer advocates\, and regulators — for a wide-ranging public discussion on issues raised by data portability. The workshop will address questions such as the potential benefits to consumers and competition of data portability\, the potential risks to consumer privacy and how those risks might be mitigated\, the potential impact of mandatory data access or data sharing on companies’ incentives to innovate\, how to best ensure the security of personal data that is being transmitted from one business to another\, the merits and challenges of interoperability\, and who should be responsible for ensuring interoperability.

SUMMARY:AI Super Hackathon at International Create Challenge 2020
DESCRIPTION:Idiap Research Institute is organizing an AI Super Hackathon on August 22-30\, 2020\, in the framework of the 9th edition of the International Create Challenge: www.createchallenge.org. During 9 days of intense development\, participants will have the opportunity to turn ideas into a prototype or demonstrator. \nThe principle is quite simple: each selected team comes with an idea of a prototype/demonstrator to work on during the 9 days of the event. The only requirements for proposed projects are: \n\nThey should be in the field of AI.\nThey should be about a prototype/demonstrator not yet developed.\n\nMore information about the ICC’2020\, including the selection process\, can be found here: www.createchallenge.org. Given the current COVID-19 situation\, the organizers of the ICC’2020 guarantee that the hackathon will take place either on-site at Idiap (Martigny\, Switzerland) or online via the DevPost portal. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to the organizing team at Idiap: contact@createchallenge.org. \n

SUMMARY:IEEE NETSOFT 2020
DESCRIPTION:IEEE NETSOFT 2020 TO GO VIRTUAL\nAs you may be aware\, the World Health Organization officially declared the novel coronavirus COVID-19 a pandemic. This global health crisis is a unique challenge that has impacted many members of the IEEE family. We would like to express our concern and support for all the members of the IEEE community\, our professional team\, our families and all others affected by this outbreak. \nGovernments around the world are now issuing restrictions on travel\, gatherings\, and meetings in an effort to limit and slow the spread of the virus. The health and safety of the IEEE community is our first priority and IEEE is supporting these efforts. \nFollowing the advice and guidelines from healthcare officials and local authorities\, IEEE NetSoft 2020 will now be held virtually on 29 June – 3 July 2020. \nSoftware-Defined Networking (SDN)\, Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Cloud-Edge-Fog Computing are driving an unprecedented techno-economic shift in the Telecom and ICT industries. Network softwarization and programmability promise to reduce operational costs\, provide better flexibility and bring new service paradigms. In particular\, they are enabling the deployment of 5G infrastructures\, spanning from high data rate fixed-mobile services to the Internet of Things\, which is expected to accelerate the digital transformation that all the industry is witnessing. As a result\, new service models and new value chains will emerge\, leading to novel business models and significant socio-economic impact. \nConsidering this important trend\, the SDN Initiative that was running in 2014-2017 under the Future Directions Committee of IEEE decided to launch a new conference that was capturing the important development in the scope of softwarized networks. The International Conference on Network Softwarization\, aka NetSoft was then created and had its first event in April 2015 in London\, UK. \nIn 2020\, NetSoft is organized around the theme Bridging the gap between AI and Network Softwarization.

SUMMARY:EUCNC 2020
DESCRIPTION:EuCNC 2020: The Connectivity Revolution\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEuCNC 2020 goes Virtual\nDue to the world COVID-19 pandemic\, the Steering Committee of EuCNC 2020 has decided to change the format of the conference to an on-line virtual one\, instead of the usual face-to-face physical one in Dubrovnik.  In this new format\, there will be no Workshops\, Tutorials and Special Sessions.  On the other hand\, papers submitted to Regular Sessions that are accepted (the review process is being finalised) will be invited to be presented in an on-line mode\, after which will be submitted to IEEE Xplore as usual; accepted posters will also be presented on-line.  The format of Keynotes and Panels is being finalised with the speakers.  Further details will be provided as soon as possible.  We do regret all the inconveniences that this decision causes\, but we expect that all colleagues understand that it was not feasible to hold the conference in the usual format. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEuCNC 2020 is the 29th edition of a successful series of a conference in the field of telecommunications\, sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society and the European Association for Signal Processing\, and supported by the European Commission. This conference is one of the most prominent communications and networking conferences in Europe\, which efficiently brings together cutting-edge research and world-renown industries and businesses. The conference focuses on various aspects of 5G communications systems and networks\, including cloud and virtualisation solutions\, management technologies\, and vertical application areas. It targets to bring together researchers from all over the world to present the latest research results\, and it is one of the main venues for demonstrating the results of research projects\, especially from successive European R&D programmes co-financed by the European Commission.
