SUMMARY:Open Source Driving the European Digital Decade
DESCRIPTION:Open Source Driving the European Digital Decade | Czech Presidency\nDefault-to-open policy has provided the necessary legal foundations to adopt and contribute to open source infrastructure across several key European verticals as well as all EU27 Member States. Many of the mission critical IT systems are open source and thus not only provide enterprise grade solutions but simultaneously realise Digital Sovereignty objectives. Similarly\, open data has been a topic of discussion for years which could follow the same path as software code when it comes to agile co-innovation. If data is the new oil\, more and more attention will be given to the legal constructs related to sharing and business models as well as the underpinning infrastructure needs. To achieve openness’ full potential in terms of economic growth\, innovation and digital autonomy the entire spectrum and ecosystem should now be considered. \nMore info here.

SUMMARY:Web2 vs Web3 - Towards the Next Generation Internet
DESCRIPTION:Web2 vs Web3 – Towards the Next Generation Internet\nThe internet has been the greatest disruption of our times. In the past 50 years\, it has become the essential infrastructure supporting our digital lives\, revolutionising businesses\, public and private spheres and connecting its users to both digital and physical worlds.\nTo master its future\, Europe needs to take an active role in defining the evolution of the Internet. We will thus explore how the EU is contributing to building the future internet as an “internet of humans”\, in line with European rights and principles\, and to delivering internet technologies that enable better control of our digital life\, respects our privacy\, permits better sharing of data\, based on users’ preferences\, and enables better socio-economic impact based on improved trust. \nThe course will then dive in on the transition from Web2 to Web3\, in particular how we might move from the status quo of Web2\, where we have central gatekeepers controlling content\, towards a more decentralized web\, one in which content will lay more in the hands of individuals. \nSubtopics \n• The EU vision for the future internet and the technology building blocks behind the “internet of humans”\n• Political challenges brought by Web3. Current solutions for those of Web2\n• Status quo of Web2\, exploration of Web3 and alternative definitions (Web4&5)\n• Socio-economic potentials (and threats) of the Web3 and its applications\n• Privacy and data protection challenges on Web3\n• Tokenization of sustainable agriculture \nSpeakers \n• Gemma CAROLILLO\, Acting HoU – Next-Generation Internet – European Commission\, DG CONNECT\n• Fernando ALMEIDA\, Professor Instituto Superior Politécnico Gaya\n• Shermin VOSHMGIR\, Founder of Blockchain Hub and director of the Research Institute for Crypto Economics at the Vienna University of Economics\n• Paola HEUDEBERT\, Head of Legal & Public Affairs archipels.io \nBackground information \nThis event is part of the CONNECT University Autumn School 2022 on Secure & Sustainable Digital Infrastructures\, that aims to  address how this decade’s state-of-the-art digital infrastructure solutions fit over existing ones\, fostering a circular economy system\, while ensuring a high degree of security. \nCheck this blogpost for the full programme and more information.

SUMMARY:High-level multi-stakeholder event on the Future of the Internet
DESCRIPTION:The event\, organised by the European Commission in collaboration with the Czech Presidency to the Council of the EU\, will bring together representatives from the global multi-stakeholder community to promote the overarching European vision for the Internet and share solutions to implement the principles enshrined in the Declaration on the Future of the Internet (DFI). \nThe DFI\, launched on 28 April 2022 and supported by 60 partners from across the world\, sets out the vision and principles of a trusted Internet that is open\, free\, global\, interoperable\, reliable\, and secure. The efforts to promote this positive agenda for the future of the Internet have become more relevant in the current geopolitical landscape. In this context\, it is ever more important that we step up our actions to make the internet a safe and trusted space for everyone\, where the fundamental freedoms and human rights we hold true offline are also protected online. \nMore info: https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/events/high-level-multi-stakeholder-event-future-internet

SUMMARY:High-Level Expert Webinar: Digital Commons and Digital Sovereignty
DESCRIPTION:Digital Commons are among the core assets to pursue Europe’s Digital Sovereignty. Several initiatives and calls for actions are gaining traction\, striving to bring real benefits to individuals and organisations by ensuring open\, inclusive and decentralised access to digital resources in line with the core principles and action of the Next Generation Internet (NGI) Initiative. However\, in order to ensure that such approaches can grow and become viable alternatives over the current concentration of Internet resources\, it is crucial to pull resources. Therefore\, policymakers\, regulators\, public authorities and all other relevant players in the internet arena must converge to define collaboration policies and targeted institutional and financial plans to guarantee interoperability and community governance.\n\n\nThe main objectives of the webinar:\n\n\n Discuss priorities for Europe to support an open\, free\, global\, interoperable\, reliable\, and secure Internet.\n Explore the latest evolution of Digital Commons initiatives and relevant European policy-driven efforts.\n Discuss the role of the Next Generation Internet initiative as a way to foster Digital Commons and European Digital Sovereignty.\n Increase collaboration among all European players at work on Digital Commons.\n\nThe webinar will be moderated by Dr Monique Calisti\, CEO Martel Innovate\, Director NGI Outreach Office.\n\n \nAgenda\n\n 14h:30 – 14h:35\nWelcome and introduction – Dr Monique Calisti\, CEO Martel Innovate\, Director NGI Outreach Office\n\n \n\n 14h:35 – 14h:50\nThe European Digital Priorities Next Generation Internet (NGI) contribution to Digital Commons – Gemma Carolillo\, Deputy Head of Next Generation Internet Unit\n\n \n\n 14h:50 – 15h:10\nKey note – Nele Leosk\, Ambassador-at-Large for Digital Affairs of Estonia\n\n \n\n 15h:10 – 16h:25\nExpert panel discussion\n\n Paul Keller\, Director of Open Future\n Kasia Odrozek\, Director of Mozilla Foundation\n Melanie Dulong de Rosnay\, Director of CNRS Center for Internet and Society\n Laureen Van Breen\, Director of WikiRate\n\n\n\n \n\n 16h:25 – 16h30\nWrap-up and next appointments – Dr Monique Calisti\, CEO Martel Innovate\, Director NGI Outreach Office\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\nRegistration is free.

SUMMARY:Digital Assembly 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Digital Assembly is an annual event hosted by the European Commission and the holder of the spring presidency of the Council of the European Union. It is a forum to address important issues of the digital transition. The Digital Assembly of 2023 (DA23) will be hosted by the Swedish presidency at Scandinavian XPO during Q2 2023. \n\n\n\nThe Swedish Presidency seeks to build a conference program that addresses current EU initiatives as well as ongoing debates on the conference theme. Thus\, the conference will provide an opportunity to showcase the status and potential of initiatives within the Digital Decade\, the EU Cyber Security Strategy as well as the Twin transitions. The Swedish Presidency also aims to build upon related conversations previously held within the Troika\, such as the Digital Assembly 2022 conference in Toulouse and the conference EU Secure and Innovative Digital Future held in Prague 2022. However\, given the quickly changing discursive context within which the conference will be situated\, the project management will closely follow the development in related fields and tailor the program accordingly. \n\n\n\nObjective 1: To stimulate the European discourse on the EUs digital transition and cyber security by providing a platform for multistakeholder dialogue. \n\n\n\nThe target group for DA23 is government officials\, regulators\, private sector representatives and the academia. Non-governmental organisations will also be approached to contribute their perspective on the topic at hand. EU Commissioners and the Troika ministers in the European Union responsible for digital issues will be invited\, as well as high-level business and public policy decisionmakers. By bringing together a multitude of stakeholder in a quad helix constellation the project will stimulate debate\, collaboration and innovation on the conference theme.

SUMMARY:Diversity-aware Hybrid human artificial intelligence
DESCRIPTION:The increase in social media and Internet users’ exposure to diversity has not come with new instruments and skills to deal with it\, despite the invariable impact that diversity has on human lives. This workshop — which will take place within the 2nd International Conference on Hybrid Human Artificial Intelligence (HHAI 2023) on June 26-27 — seeks to promote richer and deeper social interactions by enabling the Internet of Us\, a Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence online platform\, where human social relations are mediated and empowered by diversity-aware Artificial Intelligence. Read the WeNet manifesto here. \n\n\n\nThe workshop welcomes contributions across disciplines\, in the form of papers connected either to the workshop’s theme and topics\, or to the shared data-analysis task (see the call for contributions). \n\n\n\nMain theme and topics\n\n\n\nThe focus of this workshop is how to improve upon the limitations of existing systems by empowering richer and deeper social interactions through diversity-aware Artificial Intelligence. The vision is that of enabling a Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence online platform (‘The Internet of Us’)\, which will be robust to the many forms of diversity and to the fact that most of them will be unexpected and unknown. It is a move from a network of computers\, which in turn may be connected to people\, to a hybrid network of people and AI systems\, where the interactions are mediated and empowered by AI systems. In the same way the Internet connects computers by abstracting over their diversity via the creation of a common communication layer\, the goal of the envisioned platform is to connect people and augment their social interactions\, by creating a common human-level communication layer above their diversity\, towards a better and more inclusive society. \n\n\n\nAny topic relating to the general theme of the workshop is welcome. The following image  is an indicative\, and non-exhaustive breakdown of the workshop and contributions themes: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContributions are expected to be highly interdisciplinary\, with a focus on human involvement and on how to develop meaningful paradigms of AI-enabled human-human interactions\, human-AI interactions\, human-centered AI-AI interactions. A non-exhaustive list of relevant disciplines and subdisciplines is: Agents and Multi-Agent Systems\, Ethics\, HCI\, Knowledge Representation\, Machine Learning\, Ontologies\, Privacy\, Psychology\, Social Computing\, Social Psychology\, Social Sciences. \n\n\n\nThe “Empirical Studies on Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence (EHHAI)” session\n\n\n\n A special session will be dedicated to papers describing the results of the empirical analysis of data about human behaviour provided by the workshop organisers. For details see: Visit the call for contributions page for details on how to participate. \n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\nThe programme of the workshop will feature invited talks\, a panel and discussion on the accepted submitted research papers. The complete agenda will be available in due time. \n\n\n\nSubmissions\n\n\n\nAll papers must be at most 4 pages (excluding references). All submissions should adhere to the IOS formatting guidelines (https://www.iospress.com/book-article-instructions).
