SUMMARY:OW2con’21
DESCRIPTION:Leveraging the European Open Source Ecosystem\nOpen-source software in modern corporate information systems is what brings together experts from around the world at OW2con’21. The central theme of OW2con’21 is “Leveraging the European Open Source Ecosystem.” \nThe world needs a vibrant European open source ecosystem. As open-source software has become mainstream how do we ensure it creates long-term value for all and enables good jobs and digital sovereignty across societies? The growth and sustainability of the ecosystem depend on the success of its stakeholders: open-source projects and developers\, open-source foundations\, systems integrators\, software vendors\, and users. We all play a part through our technology choices\, our best practices\, our engagement with other players. We each have a vested interest in the well-being of other stakeholders. OW2con’21 will address the many challenges of ensuring a sustainable European open source ecosystem.

SUMMARY:Next Generation Internet webinar on Linked Data
DESCRIPTION:In this free online event\, projects from across the Next Generation Internet universe present their state-of-the-art work on Linked Data and other forms of metadata. The event is organized by NLnet foundation on June 21st 2021 at 9.30 CEST. \nThe webinar brings together innovative projects advancing the state of art in Linked Data. These efforts funded by various funding programs of the Next Generation Internet initiative will share their progress to extract\, add and use worthwhile metadata to our data and online information. \nLinked Data is a broad field of research and development that aims to make digital information more structured\, interlinked and meaningful (or “semantic”) — to computers but also to humans. This can for instance enable more personal and insightful search engine results\, insights into complex data sets but also new avenues for online social networking (for example\, the decentralized social networking protocol ActivityPub powering federated communities uses Linked Data). NGI projects are working on the technical and infrastructural hurdles to overcome before everyone can benefit from these richer online experiences. \nDuring this online session a range of projects funded by the Next Generation Internet initiative will discuss their progress using\, extracting and manipulating Linked Data and discuss how this field of research and development can move into the future. \nAgenda\nFind the updated agenda on the event website. No registration or signup is required\, everyone is free to join participate through BigBlueButton or join the live stream as a visitor.

SUMMARY:NGI Forward Salon: Lightest/Trust Infrustructure
DESCRIPTION:The NGI ESSIF-Lab project TRAIN (Trust Management Infrastructure) leverages a decentralized data protected approach for a Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) context. It proposes an infrastructure for SSI that can be used to verify conformance of the issuer to a certain policy and trust scheme. This is important because an ever-increasing number and variety of transactions are conducted digitally over the Internet. At the same time\, identity and other credential schemes are evolving towards decentralized complex and open approaches; anyone can be entitled as issuer. For all this\, trust is a central empowering factor. So how can you be sure that the entity\, be it person or organization making the transaction or issuing a credential is really who they say they are? \nThe challenge of decentralized trust is not entirely new. Trading\, for example\, has always involved trust and risk. Whether it is for barter\, or for promissory notes. Before modern communication\, when trading with someone you did not know\, you would take up references from someone you did trust. The longer the distance\, the more difficult and risky that was. Long-distance trading sometimes involved family members\, travelling and becoming established in those distant locations. In the Twenty-First Century\, sophisticated methods to provide that trust between counterparties have been developed\, but still rely on someone to provide the references. These now take the form of ‘Trusted Third Parties’ who may be regulated from within an industry itself\, or through legislation\, to provide ‘certification’. So\, how do you obtain the details of the certifications that you need to satisfy acceptable risk and build trust? \nThe EU H2020 project LIGHTest has developed a flexible approach for this challenge: global lightweight trust infrastructure providing parties of electronic transactions with automatic validation of trust based on their individual trust policies through the publication\, querying\, and cross-jurisdiction translation of information relevant in making decisions. LIGHTest empowers counterparties to establish trust and awareness of risk through recognizing the ‘Chain of Trust’ and associated certification. It can also provide automatic verification of that certification for every transaction. Verifiers are empowered to make their own trust decisions while different actors (industry organizations\, NGOs) can set up their own trust schemes\, based on established ones like eIDAS. \nFraunhofer\, SICPA\, and Validated ID will present and demonstrate the results of their work in LIGHTest and their NGI ESSIF Lab Projects.

SUMMARY:IntellIoT Event
DESCRIPTION:IntellIoT Event: Human In the Loop – a guide to successful AI\nLet’s discuss the human-machine collaboration of the future! \nWill AI outsmart the human? Or going one step further – will it make the humans redundant? Not according to the science. In fact\, researchers state that a collaboration between humans and machines is the main factor of successful next generation technology. The Human-in-the-Loop approach aims to solve the biggest problem in current AI – the machine’s lack of decisiveness when approaching an unknown situation. The question is: how to incorporate the human aspect in technology? \nOn June 15th\, the innovation experts from IntellIoT\, Startup Colors\, and the Meetup.Ai community in Berlin invite you to a knowledge-packed online event. \nJoin us in a conversation on the modern approach to human-machine collaboration and its importance in the process of developing next generation IoT solutions. \nJoining us in the conversation will be: \n\nRob van Kranenburg\, Founder of #IoTCouncil and #IoTDay\nCarina Pamminger\, Chief Project Manager at HOLO-LIGHT\n\nMore speakers coming soon. \nModerating the conversation will be Nicholas Borsotto Machado Monteiro from meetup.ai. \nAll information and registration here

DESCRIPTION:This webinar is powered by NGI TETRA and ONTOCHAIN\nWhen: 02 June 2021 from 10:00 to 11:40 CEST \nWhere: Online \nApply Here!\nWhat will you get?\nManaging intellectual property (IP) itself is not an easy task\, and when it comes to tackling IP issues in blockchain technologies\, it may become even more challenging. NGI TETRA\, in cooperation with ONTOCHAIN\, is organising a webinar programme to cover the basics of IP in the world of blockchain and to guide you on how to make use of IP when dealing with blockchain-related projects. \nFirst session: Managing IP in Blockchain Applications\nWhen dealing with IP and blockchain\, the issues are twofold: securing IP rights in Blockchain technology and managing IP rights through Blockchain technology. On one hand\, there is the obvious fact that blockchain software and data deployment must deal with existing IP rights and those generated as a consequence of that deployment\, such as software copyright and licensing\, databases rights\, trade secrets etc. On the other hand\, a blockchain seems to be a perfect tool to serve as a legal ledger for the recording of IP rights and several projects are attempting to redesign IP management processes. \nSecond session: IP Landscape in Blockchain\nThe presentation will provide an overview of the state of the art in different areas of Blockchain\, including Self Sovereign Identity\, Copyright Management\, Data Provenance\, Reputation Models\, Value Sharing and Incentives and others and will exemplify it through patent landscapes collected by the tool MyIntelliPatent. This supporting tool is provided by IntelliSemantic to the third parties participating in the NGI ONTOCHAIN project to contribute to their state of the art and to check the eventual need to apply for a new patent if this is suitably motivated by their innovation. \nAgenda\n10:00 – 10:10: Opening\n10:10 – 10:50: Managing IP in Blockchain Applications by Erwin Sotiri (NGI TETRA)\n10:50 – 11:00: Q&A\n11:00 – 11:30: IP Landscape in Blockchain by Alberto Ciaramella (ONTOCHAIN)\n11:30 – 11:40: Q&A and Closing \nSpeakers\nErwin SOTIRI\nAttorney at law\, IP & ICT Legal Expert \nInitially as a practitioner at several major law firms in France then in Luxembourg\, Erwin is the founding partner of JURISCONSUL\, a leading boutique law firm\, specializing on intellectual property\, software\, technology and increasingly focusing on fintech. Erwin is the author of “Précis sur les crypto-monnaies” edited by Legitech. He also authors articles on blockchains\, artificial intelligence and copyright. He regularly speaks in events involving technologies and digital content. \n \n \nAlberto CIARAMELLA\nResearch manager\n \nAlberto Ciaramella as the CEO of IntelliSemantic is active in the research of text and data analytics\, semantics\, linked data and big data technologies\, artificial intelligence. These technologies are used in different verticals\, as Patents\, Scientific\, Technical and Medical publications for business intelligence\, an example of which is the solution MyIntelliPatent\, for patent landscaping and monitoring. Alberto Ciaramella is presently active in NGI Ontochain project and in the past participated to successful EU-funded projects.

SUMMARY:The Web after the Platforms
DESCRIPTION:The Web after the Platforms DAPSI FINAL EVENT\nWhat is at stake with Interoperability?\nStandards have been defined to build a different web\, to give back control of data usage to actors\, to maintain control of industrial data and to allow for fair competition conditions. However\, these opportunities are not well known by the entrepreneurs who are likely to seize them\, support them and leverage their potential\, neither by the public actors likely to encourage them\, nor\, more widely\, by citizens. \nThis event proposes to discuss the implications of these changes based on the input from various use cases. \nHow do businesses boost or strengthen their market access? How can these standards be used as a weapon of European digital fairness? What changes can be made to the rules for managing personal data? What kind of legal frameworks should be built? How can we educate citizens and actors to manage their data? Finally\, how will these transformations affect the organization of businesses and institutions? \nWe will explore all these issues by mobilising European experts and stakeholders of these topics. We will also shed light on the seven winning projects of the European challenge DAPSI (Data Portability & Services Incubator – dapsi.ngi.eu) proposed by the European initiative NGI (Next Generation Internet – funded by the European Union in the framework of the H2020 programme). \nThe conference is a 100% digital event. It is addressed to all European stakeholders in digital innovation (large companies\, public actors\, academics\, innovative start-ups & SMEs\, representatives of associations and civil society and journalists\, etc.). It will be held in English and French. Simultaneous translation will be available. \nThis event is the kick-off of a cycle of four digital webinars that will focus on different sectoral use\ncases\, to be organized in 2021. \nAGENDA\nMorning (09:45-12:00): Interoperability as a means for rebuilding the web\, with Gilles Babinet (co-Chairman at French Digital National Council and Digital Champion at the European Commission)\, Jean-François Abramatic (ex Inria\, ex W3C)\, Alain Assouline (CINOV – Numerique)\, Antoine Garnier (IDSA). \nAfternoon (13:30-16:45): DAPSI FINAL EVENT – Presentation of the 7 winning DAPSI projects\, roundtables with the DAPSI project leaders. The first roundtable will focus on the issues of uses\, user experience & adoption\, the second one on technology transfer and scaling up issues. \nFocus on the 7 innovations for data portability from the DAPSI program\n\nAlias Identity: ALIAS enables the next generation of applications to happen\, by automating GDPR portability for applications developers.\nOwn your Data – Digital Immunization Passport (DIP): The main focus of this project is on Data Interoperability & Compatibility through establishing interfaces between health industry and individuals as well as pushing forward on standardized interfaces for PDSs.\nAudria – OpenXport: The OpenXPort project will start by providing two main results. First\, a best practice document which supports developers and policymakers to address and shape the future of data portability will be created. Second\, an Open Source framework for the portability of core PIM data types will be defined. Given the ubiquity and key role of PIM data and prior work in this field\, such an open framework has a huge potential for bringing data portability into widespread practice and also to serve as a blueprint for data portability in other domains.\nDpella: a tool that perturbs data analyses’ results with carefully calibrated randomized noise to protect the privacy of individuals with mathematical guarantees\, while providing information about the accuracy of the results. This project explores the possibilities for this technology to enable governments and companies to produce open\, secure\, and public data analyses from private datasets.\nGridpocket – Oratorio: The ORATORIO project consists also in the development of a platform that will store different types of energy data of consumers and prosumers (consumption/production and IoT data in this prototype): consumption data\, energy profiles\, analytics of use\, data of IoT devices\, electric vehicule data.\nDigita BV: software and services that allow organizations to easily connect to Solid-based personal data sets.\nIMEC – Prov4ITDATA: This project offers an improved solution that is fully transparent and has fine-grained configuration to improve interoperability with other data models by exploiting and advancing the existing open-source tools RML.io and Comunica and showing its extensibility by directly applying it to the Solid ecosystem.\n\nRegistration\nPlease register by clicking here.

SUMMARY:Leading the Digital Decade
DESCRIPTION:Leading the Digital Decade\, held 1-2 June\, is a two-day online event focused on Europe’s digital transformation towards 2030. \nWhat should the future of digital in Europe be? What should our 2030 goals be when it comes to digital transformation? How can we make sure we meet our objectives? \nThese are the main questions that Leading the Digital Decade aims to answer. The past 18 months have radically transformed Europe and the world. Because of the ongoing pandemic\, the world has digitalised faster than ever before. Digital is what has kept our society going. It has also widened the gap between those who have the means to shift to digital and enjoy its benefits and those who do not. \nAt this crossroads\, Europe must define its path going forward. Leading the Digital Decade focuses on defining this path. This two-day event is co-organised by the European Commission and the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union and will be held virtually on 1 and 2 June 2021. \nDay 1\nThe starting point of the first day’s debate is the Communication 2030 Digital Compass: the European way for the Digital Decade. Its vision is clear: everyone in Europe can and should benefit from digital. \nTo make this a reality\, we need to improve on digital skills\, infrastructure and use of technology by people\, companies and public administrations. \nDay 2\nThe second day will be dedicated to the launch of the Digital Europe Programme\, the first financial instrument of the EU to specifically finance European projects on digital. The Digital Europe Programme will accelerate the economic recovery and shape the digital transformation of Europe benefiting citizens and businesses. \nThe Digital Europe Programme will provide funding for projects in five areas: \n\nsupercomputing\nartificial intelligence\ncybersecurity\nadvanced digital skills\nuse of digital technologies across the economy and society\n\nJoin the conversation with #DigitalEU2030\nThe full programme for Leading the Digital Decade will be available soon. \nRegister for the event

SUMMARY:TRUST IN DATA?
DESCRIPTION:TRUST IN DATA? Why social innovation needs digital.\nEUSES\, Mannheim\, Day 2 10-11 am CET \nSharing data – whether personal or not – is key to social innovation and digital competitiveness. Data processing innovation relates to Europe’s sustainable growth and digital jobs. Before the internet era data collection was slow\, top-down\, and very little data was shared let alone queried. The internet’s growth expands broadband access such that distributed computation happens in real time on connected devices near you. Our web business model relies on voluntary sharing of data\, when the world of internet and big data is a lot more centralized and extractive than it ever was. A few aggregators act as global online gateways to products\, services and content; they capture most of the digital value chain. With Open Data and the GDPR\, we all realize that data privacy\, data ownership and data trust has social value above and beyond business as usual. Data governance matters to individuals as well as to society as a whole. Social innovation requires maximising socio-economic benefits of ‘being connected’\, whilst minimising the centralized control power over the web. Data asymmetries and mistrust is a growing threat to social innovation. Can we agree on our digital rights\, common safety safeguards\, prevention of identity theft\, cybercrime\, data breaches\, manipulation and malware? Because digital inclusion won’t just happen by default. \nSpeakers:\n\nDr Loretta Anania\, European Commission Next Generation Internet Unit\, moderator\nDr Andrea Renda\, Director\, Centre for European Policy Studies\, Brussels\, Belgium \nSir Geoff Mulgan\, Professor of Collective Intelligence\, University College London\, UK\nDr Michelangelo Secchi\, Centre for Social Innovation\, Coimbra\, Portugal \nProf. Elizabeth Maria Renieris\, Director\, Cybersecurity and Technology Ethics Lab\, Harvard and Stanford Universities\, USA

SUMMARY:NGI Forward Salon: Spotlight on Dark Patterns
DESCRIPTION:Spotlight on Dark Patterns: What can the ePrivacy Regulation do?\nCo-hosted by NGI FORWARD and the German Research Institute for Public Administration. Deutsches Forschungsinstitut für Öffentliche Verwaltung\, FÖV “Dark Pattern Detection-Project (Dapde) funded by the German Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection\, and the Next Generation Internet initiative (NGI) of the European Commission. \nSCOPE\nAt least since the entry into force of the GDPR\, Dark Patterns seem to be all over the internet. Companies use interface designs to lead users to take decisions contrary to their actual interests. Consent banners appear to have become more and more loaded with Dark Patterns. \nHow could EU Member States and European law be able to limit the use of Dark Patterns? The proposed ePrivacy Regulation\, set to replace the old ePrivacy Directive (Directive 2002/58/EC) and adapt it to the evolution of electronic communications\, could provide a chance for the European legislator to take a stricter stance on Dark Patterns. However\, different from\, for example the new California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) of 2020\, none of the current proposals for the Trilogue specifically addresses Dark Patterns. Thus\, the question arises whether the new ePrivacy Regulation can and should limit the use of Dark Patterns. \nThe talk will bring together perspectives from consumer protection organizations\, industry representatives and academics. The format will be a moderated podium discussion followed by questions from the audience.\nThe goal of the event is to discuss the phenomenon of Dark Patterns and how best to address it\, in particular through regulation. \nSpeakers\n\nPeter Eberl\, Deputy Head of Unit Cybersecurity and Digital Privacy\, EU Commission\nbe.linkedin.com/in/peter-eberl-0a528a60\nMaryant Fernández\, Senior Digital Policy Officer\, The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC)\nwww.linkedin.com/in/maryantfernandez\nCristiana Santos\, Assistant Professor\, Utrecht University\nwww.linkedin.com/in/cristianateixeirasantos\nChristian Drews\, Research Fellow\, Dapde\nwww.linkedin.com/in/christian-drews\n\nModeration\nQuirin Weinzierl\, Project Coordinator\, Dapde\nwww.linkedin.com/in/quirin-w-1a2756140 \nOrganizers\nCarsten Berger\, Quirin Weinzierl and Anton Kamke (FÖV Speyer) with Rob Van Kranenburg \n\nThe Salons reflect the views of the participants and do not necessarily reflect the views of the European Commission but form part of the project’s overarching recommendations for the NGI and future European internet policy.

SUMMARY:NGI Forward Salon Foundationals: Blockchain Ecologies
DESCRIPTION:NGI Forward Salon Foundationals: Blockchain Ecologies with Primavera De Filippi\nPrimavera De Filippi will address self-sovereign identity\, the challenges it faces in order to guarantee both unicity (no more than one user per identifier) and singularity (no more than one identifier per user)\, the way in which these challenges have been addressed by Kiva and WFP through the use of biometrics\, and then open up to alternative mechanisms\, such as for instance the recently launched Proof-of-Humanity initiative\, using web-of-trust and decentralized verification systems to ensure singularity of identities.\nwww.proofofhumanity.id \n“Self-sovereign identity is a relatively new area of research\, which is only now starting to materialize into real-world applications of new digital identity management systems. This is particularly valuable for applications that have the ability to scale and greatly improve financial and social inclusion of vulnerable populations (Blakstad and Allen\, 2018). Yet\, it is important to keep in mind that while there are emerging best practice standards and primitives for self-sovereign identity (McMullen et al.\, 2019)\, there is no generic identity protocol that solves all use cases. As demonstrated by the Kiva and WFP case studies\, identity is inherently use case dependent. Interoperability and standardization will be important for scale\, but the success of a particular identity application will depend on how its deployment is tailored to the use cases and local conditions. A successful identity management system will therefore need to be sufficiently flexible to adapt to the inherently malleable nature of human identity.” \nSource: www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fbloc.2019.00028/full \nFront. Blockchain\, 23 January 2020 | doi.org/10.3389/fbloc.2019.00028 \nSelf-Sovereign Identity in a Globalized World: Credentials-Based Identity Systems as a Driver for Economic Inclusion. By Fennie Wang1 and Primavera De Filippi. \n“Ultimately\, therefore\, the technological guarantees of blockchain technology (in terms of\, e.g. transparency\, immutability\, non-repudiability\, etc.) may reduce the need for third-party’s scrutiny and oversight over these institutions. By enhancing the perceived confidence in the operations of both public and private institutions\, blockchain technology can reduce the level of risk or vulnerability that is generally associated with trust.1 As such\, the technology could indirectly contribute to increasing the level of trust that people may be willing to confer in these institutions\, because of the higher degree of predictability associated with their actions. Indeed\, thanks to blockchain technology\, people would no longer need to trust these institutions in toto\, but only to the extent necessary for them to carry on these specific operations that cannot be codified into the formal and deterministic language of a blockchain-based system.” \nSource:\nwww.sciencespo.fr/public/chaire-numerique/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Blockchain-Technology-as-an-Instrument-for-Global-Governance-P.-De-Filippi-1.pdf \nBlockchain and the Law: The Rule of Code\nhttps://www.amazon.com/Blockchain-Law-Rule-Primavera-Filippi/dp/0674976428 \nModeration by Mantalena Kaili (ELONTECH) and Rob van Kranenburg (NGI Forward WP 4 Thinktank) \nFirst respondents are Loretta Anania (EC) and Gaëlle Le Gars (NGI Forward WP 4 Thinktank) \nThe Salons reflect the views of the participants and do not necessarily reflect the views of the European Commission but form part of the project’s overarching recommendations for the NGI and future European internet policy.

SUMMARY:NGI_TRUST Webinar Results #5
DESCRIPTION:From February 2019 to May 2020\, the NGI_Trust project ran three Open Calls to fund the development of a human-centric Internet through privacy and trust enhancing technologies. These calls attracted a significant number of applications and NGI_Trust was able to fund 57 projects focused on relevant innovations. Now that all of the funding has been allocated\, it is time to focus in on the funded projects and showcase their ideas and developments. NGI_Trust has started a series of webinars to do just this – and also to help build a community of innovators among the projects through shared ideas and principles. \nNGI_Trust will be continuing webinars with our projects during 2021. You can also find out more about the projects via the NGI_Trust twitter account and through the NGI blogposts. \nMore info on the NGI_Trust website.

SUMMARY:Think NEXUS workshop
DESCRIPTION:Key NGI technologies in the EU-US context – second workshop\nThink NEXUS builds upon EU-US experiences for developing a common Future Internet agenda. This Workshop will notably build upon the outcomes of the workshop organised on 17th of February 2021. During this previous workshop\, the participants identified the main technologies to prioritise for EU-US cooperation on Next Generation Internet (NGI). More information about these outcomes is available here. \nThe upcoming workshop will provide the chance to further define priorities for EU-US cooperation on the NGI with key experts across the Atlantic\, and provide the European Commission and National Science Foundation with a relevant roadmap for cooperation. Think NEXUS will enable experts from both sides to pitch\, discuss and design a shared agenda based on the technologies identified on internet architectures\, applications and services benefiting citizens across the globe. \nPlease find attached the agenda of the Workshop. \nTo confirm your participation\, please register here. \nYou will be quickly informed about a short questionnaire building upon the previous discussions’ outcomes.
