SUMMARY:Digital Assembly 2022
DESCRIPTION:Digital Assembly 2022: A closer look into the digital future\nThe Digital Assembly 2022 is co-organised by the European Commission and the French Presidency. It will focus in particular on issues related to EU sovereignty and autonomy. \nIn an increasingly uncertain world\, Europe is facing profound questions about how it should position itself to secure its values\, address societal challenges effectively\, and ensure prosperity and opportunity for our citizens. Technology has proven it can keep our societies and economies going in the most difficult of circumstances\, such as the COVID-19 pandemic\, whilst holding the promise of major breakthroughs in areas such as personalised health care\, smart energy and mobility and precision agriculture\, which help tackling climate change. However\, increasing reliance on technology has also underscored Europe’s dependencies on other regions for raw materials\, energy\, and crucial components. \n\nEurope produces less than 10% of the world’s semiconductors. It is heavily dependent on third-country suppliers to the point that production in important sectors such as automotive had to be suspended because of shortages. In areas such as cloud\, AI or virtual reality\, Europe is being out-invested and European companies hold low market shares. How can we best build up a thriving ecosystem in Europe for advanced technologies that can help reduce our vulnerabilities?\nIt has been estimated that the ICT sector is emitting about 3% of global CO2 emissions\, and the trends point to an increasing environmental footprint. At the same time\, technology can help reduce emissions by 15-20% in sectors such as energy\, transport or agriculture. How can we maximise the positive effects of ICT and reduce its environmental downsides? What incentives work best?\nWhilst the war Ukraine is bringing great suffering to its population and has changed the world order for many years to come\, it also raises the question as to how the country’s infrastructure can be repaired and rebuilt. How can Europe help Ukraine to unlock its great digital potential?\nThe metaverse is a concept that is mesmerising to many digital experts and is attracting significant private and public funding. What is the metaverse\, and why should it matter? Does Europe need to prepare a strategy to shape the metaverse and play a leading role in its design and operation? If so\, what issues should it particularly focus on?\n\nThese are some of the key questions that the Digital Assembly 2022 conference will dig into and try to answer. \nThis two-day event\, co-organised by the European Commission and the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union\, will be held on 21 and 22 June 2022\, online and in Toulouse.

Jan was strategy advisor at the IMEC nanotechnology research centre (that developed one of the first open innovation business models worldwide) and valorisation manager of the Flanders DC/Vlerick Business School knowledge centre. He has been actively involved in various start-up initiatives such as start it @KBC and startups.be since 2010. Jan has also co-founded Kunigi\, an interdisciplinary innovation agency. SUMMARY:Open Source Driving the European Digital Decade
DESCRIPTION:Open Source Driving the European Digital Decade | Czech Presidency\nDefault-to-open policy has provided the necessary legal foundations to adopt and contribute to open source infrastructure across several key European verticals as well as all EU27 Member States. Many of the mission critical IT systems are open source and thus not only provide enterprise grade solutions but simultaneously realise Digital Sovereignty objectives. Similarly\, open data has been a topic of discussion for years which could follow the same path as software code when it comes to agile co-innovation. If data is the new oil\, more and more attention will be given to the legal constructs related to sharing and business models as well as the underpinning infrastructure needs. To achieve openness’ full potential in terms of economic growth\, innovation and digital autonomy the entire spectrum and ecosystem should now be considered. \nMore info here.

SUMMARY:Web2 vs Web3 - Towards the Next Generation Internet
DESCRIPTION:Web2 vs Web3 – Towards the Next Generation Internet\nThe internet has been the greatest disruption of our times. In the past 50 years\, it has become the essential infrastructure supporting our digital lives\, revolutionising businesses\, public and private spheres and connecting its users to both digital and physical worlds.\nTo master its future\, Europe needs to take an active role in defining the evolution of the Internet. We will thus explore how the EU is contributing to building the future internet as an “internet of humans”\, in line with European rights and principles\, and to delivering internet technologies that enable better control of our digital life\, respects our privacy\, permits better sharing of data\, based on users’ preferences\, and enables better socio-economic impact based on improved trust. \nThe course will then dive in on the transition from Web2 to Web3\, in particular how we might move from the status quo of Web2\, where we have central gatekeepers controlling content\, towards a more decentralized web\, one in which content will lay more in the hands of individuals. \nSubtopics \n• The EU vision for the future internet and the technology building blocks behind the “internet of humans”\n• Political challenges brought by Web3. Current solutions for those of Web2\n• Status quo of Web2\, exploration of Web3 and alternative definitions (Web4&5)\n• Socio-economic potentials (and threats) of the Web3 and its applications\n• Privacy and data protection challenges on Web3\n• Tokenization of sustainable agriculture \nSpeakers \n• Gemma CAROLILLO\, Acting HoU – Next-Generation Internet – European Commission\, DG CONNECT\n• Fernando ALMEIDA\, Professor Instituto Superior Politécnico Gaya\n• Shermin VOSHMGIR\, Founder of Blockchain Hub and director of the Research Institute for Crypto Economics at the Vienna University of Economics\n• Paola HEUDEBERT\, Head of Legal & Public Affairs archipels.io \nBackground information \nThis event is part of the CONNECT University Autumn School 2022 on Secure & Sustainable Digital Infrastructures\, that aims to  address how this decade’s state-of-the-art digital infrastructure solutions fit over existing ones\, fostering a circular economy system\, while ensuring a high degree of security. \nCheck this blogpost for the full programme and more information.

SUMMARY:High-level multi-stakeholder event on the Future of the Internet
DESCRIPTION:The event\, organised by the European Commission in collaboration with the Czech Presidency to the Council of the EU\, will bring together representatives from the global multi-stakeholder community to promote the overarching European vision for the Internet and share solutions to implement the principles enshrined in the Declaration on the Future of the Internet (DFI). \nThe DFI\, launched on 28 April 2022 and supported by 60 partners from across the world\, sets out the vision and principles of a trusted Internet that is open\, free\, global\, interoperable\, reliable\, and secure. The efforts to promote this positive agenda for the future of the Internet have become more relevant in the current geopolitical landscape. SUMMARY:Masters of Digital 2023
DESCRIPTION:As our continent continues to grapple with the aftershocks of the COVID pandemic\, Russia’s war in Ukraine has put even more strain on the world economy and European unity. Meanwhile\, the searing heat of summer 2022 has shown us the consequences of inaction on the climate. Digital technologies can play a central role in tackling these many interlinked crises. The next two years leading up to the European elections in 2024 will be a critical time to make Europe’s economy more innovative while harnessing digital’s potential to drive down emissions. It is also crucial to leverage the power of technology in bolstering our digital resilience against hybrid threats\, together with likeminded partners. The time to act is now. \nMore info: mastersofdigital.org
