SUMMARY:Annual Privacy Forum 2024
DESCRIPTION:The value of personal data in the online world has significantly increased over the last years as electronic products\, services and processes have permeated every fold of everyday life. Limitations in the transparency\, the functionality and interconnectivity of online and communication services increases the risk of having personal data processed out of control of any accountable person or organization or simply becoming exposed to all sorts of privacy threats. \n\n\n\nThe EU legal framework on personal data protection is key in an effort to better control the processing of personal data while ensuring an adequate level of protection. Even the best legislative efforts cannot keep up to speed with the pace of innovative technology and business models that challenge the way personal data is processed and privacy is protected across the EU and beyond; therefore\, examining what is at stake and where threats thereto originate from becomes of paramount importance. \n\n\n\nAgainst this background\, ENISA\, DG Connect and Karlstad University jointly organize\, with the support of IMY (the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection) the Annual Privacy Forum (APF) 2024 in Karlstad\, Sweden.

SUMMARY:AIOTI Days 2024
DESCRIPTION:AIOTI is organising annual event that builds upon five successful editions of AIOTI Signature gatherings. AIOTI Days 2024 will feature the Thematic and Project sessions\, Hackathon and the Scientific Conference GIECS\, guaranteeing a rich and comprehensive experience for all participants. \n\n\n\nAt the core of AIOTI Days 2024 is the exploration of how the continuum and digital twins meet virtual worlds in the industrial space\, creating a physical-digital virtual continuum. \n\n\n\nContinuum\, digital twins and virtual worlds\n\n\n\nThe concept of the computing continuum refers to a paradigm where computing resources and services seamlessly span a range of devices\, from IoT and edge devices and sensors to centralized cloud infrastructure. It envisions a unified and integrated ecosystem where data processing and computation occur across a spectrum of devices\, enabling a more efficient and responsive computing environment and digital twin implementation. \n\n\n\nThe computing continuum is driven by the increasing volume of data generated by IoT and at the edge\, the need for real-time processing in certain applications\, and the desire to optimize resource usage. As technology evolves\, the computing continuum is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of computing architectures\, IoT and Edge Computing are at the forefront of these developments. \n\n\n\nVirtual worlds enable remote operation and monitoring of industrial processes. With the integration of sensors and IoT devices\, operators can oversee and control equipment from remote locations\, enhancing efficiency and reducing the need for physical presence on-site. \n\n\n\nOverall\, virtual worlds play a crucial role in improving efficiency\, safety\, and innovation in the industrial domain by providing realistic simulations\, supporting design processes\, and enabling better collaboration and decision-making.

SUMMARY:Global Multistakeholder High Level Conference on Governance of Web 4.0 and Virtual Worlds
DESCRIPTION:The European Commission and the 2025 Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU are organising a Global Multistakeholder High Level Conference on the governance of Web 4.0 and Virtual Worlds\, on 31 March and 1 April 2025. \n\n\n\nObjectives\n\n\n\nThe conference aims to define the principles for the global governance of Web 4.0 and virtual worlds that are up-to-speed with the dynamics of digital spaces\, ensuring transparency\, inclusiveness\, and accountability. \n\n\n\nThe event will bring together\, from all over the world\, high-level policymakers\, technologists\, academics\, and community leaders who will collaboratively propose governance models of virtual worlds. It will focus on policy solutions for an ethical\, value-driven shift to Web 4.0. and standardisation issues related to virtual worlds (including internet standards) and its technical management. Alignment of those governance frameworks with the multi-stakeholder model of internet governance will also be a salient topic of discussion. \n\n\n\nConference expected outcomes\n\n\n\nThe conference aims at the adoption of policy and technical recommendations for the future governance of Web 4.0 and Virtual Worlds\, based on consensus at the event. These intend to serve as inspiration for forthcoming discussions such as the 20 years review of the World Summit for Information Society (WSIS+20). \n\n\n\nBackground\n\n\n\nThe conference delivers on Action 9 of the European Commission Communication “An EU initiative on Web 4.0 and virtual worlds: a head start in the next technological transition“ which was adopted in 2023. This action requires the European Commission to “engage with existing multi-stakeholder internet governance institutions to design open and interoperable virtual worlds [from Q4 2023]; and support the creation of a technical multi-stakeholder forum to address certain aspects of virtual worlds and Web 4.0 beyond the remit of existing internet governance bodies [from Q1 2024]. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSee the agenda and register here.

SUMMARY:Cyprus Tech Policy Unconference: Reclaiming the Digital Commons – ReFLOSS edition
DESCRIPTION:This is one of a series of unconferences (open space gatherings with an emergent agenda) aiming for impact in tech policy\, in Cyprus and beyond. \n\n\n\nThe tech industry celebrates disruption and innovation—yet too often sidesteps the deeper conversations we urgently need: What kind of digital futures are we building? For whom? By whom? At what cost? The Cyprus Tech Policy Unconference is an invitation to pause\, regroup\, and reclaim the narrative. To centre ethics\, digital sovereignty\, and the commons in our thinking about technology. We seek to challenge extractive models and nurture free\, fair\, and participatory infrastructures for governance\, education\, and  life. \n\n\n\nWe call together:– People who think and work towards digital rights and the democratisation of technology\,– Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) developers\, educators\, researchers\, creatives\, and community organisers\,– People interested in co-creating ethical digital policy and resilient community tech– People invested in mapping the obstacles and opportunities for free/libre software in public institutions\, schools\, and cultural spaces\,– People interested in the Right to repair\, and the “public money public code” movement– Practitioners and policy-makers looking to move toward grounded\, implementable strategies for digital justice\,– People interested in connecting the above priorities with sound business practices. \n\n\n\nWhat to expectA fluid\, minimally guided\, participant-led networking\, brainstorming\, and co-working atmosphere\, following the principles of Open Space Technology: sessions are proposed and shaped by attendees themselves\, allowing for spontaneity\, relevance\, and co-ownership of the agenda.Space for panels\, co-writing labs\, workshops\, and policy roundtables.Emphasis on dialogue\, transparency\, and co-creation.
