DESCRIPTION:The European Big Data Value Forum (EBDVF) is the flagship event of the European Big Data and Data-Driven AI Research and Innovation community organized by the Big Data Value Association (BDVA) and the European Commission (DG CNECT). The 2020 edition of the EBDVF will take place between the 3rd and the 5th of November 2020 in Berlin and online\, and it is organized in collaboration with DFKI\, Plattform Industrie 4.0\, Plattform Lernende Systeme and Berlin Partner. \n \nWith a central theme “Building a strong European Data and AI Ecosystem”\, the EBDVF 2020 edition brings together the German and European communities on AI and Data. It aims to contribute to the discussions on the European Data and AI Strategy\, specifically addressing key topics for Europe such as the development of European Data Spaces\, the importance of Technology Platforms and Trust\, the opportunities for market uptake and the new challenges ahead for Data and AI within the society. The event will also focus on how Data and AI can help to tackle emerging societal challenges\, like those brought by the Covid19 pandemic. For this edition\, cross-sectorial tracks will be combined with sectorial tracks on Manufacturing\, Autonomous Systems\, Transport\, Mobility and Logistics\, Health and Smart Society. Furthermore\, the programme will include multiple research and innovation sessions and startups pitches\, showcasing Europe’s R&I excellence on Data and AI. \n\nThe EBDVF2020 edition will particularly benefit from the very vibrant Data and AI research and startup ecosystem in Berlin. Each of the programme tracks is jointly organised by a German representative (from the Berlin research and innovation community or coming from other German key initiatives and organisations) and a European representative to maximise co-operation and value created. With this hybrid approach\, the event aims at having a great local and European impact and leveraging the potential of the innovative German ecosystem. \nFurthermore\, the 2020 EBDVF edition will combine physical and virtual sessions in order to accommodate for possible travel disruptions linked to Covid19\, this will offer to the event the possibility to reach a much wider audience\, achieving a record in terms of participants from all over Europe. \nEBDVF2020 offers interesting virtual sponsoring options for companies\, research institutions and AI and Data initiatives\, with a lot of interaction possibilities outreaching a much wider audience than ever before. SUMMARY:NGI @ IGF2020
DESCRIPTION:Trustworthy internet technologies against COVID-19\nTechnology has played a key role in the COVID-19 global health crisis outbreak and it will play an even more important role in supporting countries and citizens to overcome the crisis. This session will look at how effective technology-based measures have been in tackling the spread of the virus; how they have ensured the respect of laws and fundamental rights; and what lessons can be learned for the development of trustworthy internet technologies and their use for public policy purposes. \nThe public health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic created an unprecedented global challenge to health care systems and our way of life. Digital technologies have played an important role since the beginning of the crisis outbreak and they will play an even more important role in supporting countries and citizens to manage and overcome the crisis. In response to this emergency outbreak\, the European Commission has taken a series of initiatives to coordinate a common European approach for the use of mobile applications and mobile data in the context of the coronavirus crisis. The European Commission adopted a Recommendation to support Member States in exiting the COVID-19 crisis and supported European Member States in preparing and implementing a common European Toolbox for the use of mobile applications for contact tracing and warning. These instruments were flexible and agile enough to allow the European Union to promptly react and adapt its response to the emergency. Starting from the COVID-19 crisis experience\, this open forum aims at discussing how technologies can play a role in a global health crisis and yet continue to respect human rights and enact principles and values such as privacy\, trust\, openness\, transparency\, decentralisation\, user control and inclusiveness. The session will look at how effective technology-based measures taken in different countries and regions in the world have been in tackling the spread of the virus; how they have ensured the respect of laws and fundamental rights; and what lessons can be learned for the development of trustworthy internet technologies and their use for public policy purposes. The European Commission has also funded several projects developing technologies and apps to fight the COVID-19 outbreak\, notably in the context of the Next Generation Internet (NGI) programme. The open forum will be the occasion to present to the audience concrete projects and to reflect on lessons learnt and way forward. \nModerators:\n\nMonique Calisti\, CEO and Head of Martel Media and Consulting\, NGI Outreach Office Director\nEsteve Sanz\, European Commission\n\nSpeakers:\n\nGemma Carolillo\, Deputy Head of Unit\, Next-Generation Internet\, DG CNECT\nDirk-Willem van Gulik\, Special advisor to NL government for COVID-19 tracing apps\nJelena Malinina\, Digital health\, policy officer at  BEUC\, the European consumer organisation\nHong-Wei Jyan\, Director General\, Department of Cyber Security of Taiwan\, responsible for the development of the apps on COVID-19

SUMMARY:Sustainable Internet Governance & the Right to Development
DESCRIPTION:IGF 2020 Sustainable Internet Governance & the Right to Development\nThis meeting continues groundbreaking work drawing links between environmental sustainability and human rights. Its focus is Article 4 of the Charter of Human Rights and Principles for the Internet in light of the urgent need to identify and rectify the adverse environmental impacts of internet technologies. This meeting will contribute to emerging action plans to ensure that environmental sustainability and the full realization of human rights are cornerstones of internet governance. \nInternet-connected technologies play a vital role in helping to achieve full realisation of human rights. All around the world emerging technologies are contributing to the effort of eradicating poverty\, hunger\, and diseases and promoting gender equality and empowerment of women and youth. Digital technologies are also increasingly central to our current efforts to find solutions to the climate crisis and to promote environmental protection. However in this still highly digitally divided world we live in\, the drive for digital overconsumption is creating unprecedented levels of e-waste\, a burden that affects mostly developing countries with the huge environmental cost\, and the consequent exposure of entire populations to serious health conditions. \nThis year the IRPC meeting will be looking into Article 4 of the Charter of Human Rights and Principles for the Internet  – Right to Development Through the Internet to address how human development and environmental sustainability can be achieved through the Internet\, and will work with representatives from all stakeholder groups to identify the adverse environmental impact of Internet-connected technologies and to help developing solutions to ensure the full realisation of human rights in the online environment. \nMeeting Format\nOpening Remarks and brief introduction to the Internet Rights and Principles Coalition\nMinda Moreira\, co-Chair IRPC \nPresentations from invited SpeakersQ&A from participants\, discussion\, closing remarks \nObjectives of this session:\n\nAddress the major issues arising from the rapid growth of the ICT industry and digital overconsumption in view of the human rights directly affected by resulting environmental hazards\nConsider further the specific impacts on human and sustainable development goals as these intersect with “greening the internet” policymaking.\nBring together representatives of all sectors committed to work on the urgently needed solutions to ensure that next generation of internet-connected technologies enable human development and a sustainable environment for full realisation of human rights.\n\nPolicy questions that this meeting will address include:\n\nHow does the environmental impact of internet-connected technologies affect human rights especially the right to development?\nAs the UN SDGs look to “connect the next billion”\, how can internet policymakers\, designers\, and citizens better respond to the environmental issues arising from the growing energy demands\, manufacturing\, consumption and disposal of internet-connected technologies?\nIn which specific areas can different stakeholders cooperate more closely to work towards environmentally sustainable and human rights-respecting internet futures?\n\nThis session follows up to Coalition’s annual meetings organised at IGF2018 in Paris and IGF2019 in Berlin\, as well the 2019 EuroDIG in The Hague\, and Plenary 4 from the EuroDIG 2020. It is part of the IRPC’s ongoing outreach and dissemination work based on the Charter of Human Rights and Principles for the Internet.

SUMMARY:Think NEXUS #Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Think NEXUS #Webinar: Emerging AI technology and its social and ethical implications\nThink NEXUS is organising a webinar titled ‘Emerging AI technology and its social and ethical implications’\, which will be held on November 24th at 18h EET (17h CET). \nThe webinar is free of charge.\nJoin us here. More info is avalaible here. \nWebinar details\nAI makes possible many new products and services that drive economic growth and technological innovation\, worldwide\, and is the key to military technology. Therefore\, “AI systems” seen as automated decision systems raise countless socio-political questions\, for example: who possesses the knowledge needed to take decisions? Who determines who possesses that knowledge?  And to what extend AI enables influencing on public and political debate\, for example through political micro-targeting and the dissemination of disinformation? Besides privacy and security\, specific social and ethical issues that can be affected by AI include responsibility and predictability of algorithms\, avoidance of discrimination\, social exclusion\, and stigmatisation\, ‘winner-takes-all’ market dynamics\, de-skilling\, de-socialisation\, and unemployment\, among others. \nThere have been many initiatives within science\, business\, and government to look at AI from a social and ethical perspective. According to the European AI Strategy\, ‘human-centric’ AI should\, firstly\, respect fundamental rights\, applicable regulations and core principles and values\, ensuring an “ethical purpose”. And\, secondly\, the technology must be robust and trustworthy. However\, the semantics behind AI are not shared between both sides of the Atlantic despite the common challenge to responsibly develop and use AI technology – maximizing its benefits while minimizing risks and protecting human rights. It’s now time for shared rules and legislation.

SUMMARY:TOKEN National Event
DESCRIPTION:Connecting Europe through blockchain and self sovereign identity: A discussion on its benefit for public services\nBlockchain technology has enormous potential to enhance the way that citizens\, governments and businesses interact\, by enhancing trust between entities and improving the efficiency of operations. This\, coupled with the developments in Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) in the world of digital identity\, creates the potential for a more trustworthy\, secure and fair digital identity future for Europe. \nThe Internet has been described as “the decisive technology of the information age”\, and blockchain is now reinventing it. The domain of blockchain applications seems to be limitless\, from payments to safe data sharing of Internet of Things\, or healthcare data. An identity management model powered by blockchain could pioneer this change. This new model would reimagine the relationship between state and individual\, as the government would become the verifier\, rather than the controller of people’s public service identity. \nOn 26th of November\, an event “Connecting Europe through blockchain and self-sovereign identity: A discussion on its benefit for public services” will be organised and held on behalf of the TOKEN project\, accompanied by a rock-solid panel of highly specialized experts with demonstrable professional experience in the fields of blockchain and digital identity. \nAbout the speakers:\n\nRieks Joosten – Senior Scientist at TNO (business information processes and information security).\nKai Wagner – Member of the Board of Directors at International Association for Trusted Blockchain Applications; Partnership Development at Jolocom\nCarlos Pastor Matut – Digital Identity Leader at Alastria\, Convenor ESSIF at European Blockchain Partnership\nAndrés Sánchez– Programme and project manager at TOKEN project\, Director of FundingBox Communities\nJorge Fernandez – CTO at FundingBox\, Co-founder of BotCar (Internet of Things Platform for smarter driving)\nDaniel Du Seuil – convenor of the European Self Sovereign Identity Framework within the European Blockchain Partnership\n\nEvent agenda:\n\nWelcome note by Andrés Sánchez\nTOKEN Project and its technology by Jorge Fernandez\nKeynote speech: “ESSIF and Self sovereign identity in Europe” by Daniel Du Seuil\nRound table: How Self sovereign Identity will change society\nThe round table will be chaired by the following experts: \n\nRieks Joosten\nKai Wagner\nCarlos Pastor Matut\nAndrés Sánchez\nJorge Fernandez\nDaniel Du Seuil\n\n\nQ&A

SUMMARY:NGI Forward at IOTSWC Barcelona DIGITAL SUMMIT 2020
DESCRIPTION:Salon: Disposable Identities and Digital Twins\nThe world rapidly shifts from analogue to digital. Rules have now changed with self-driving connected cars that make decisions not on ‘real’ events but on data streams that can enable predictive analytics and many other forms of augmented decision. These data streams\, now can act in the car without the knowledge of the driver. As data becomes as importantб or more important than territory as a means to power (defined as funding capability of future value) new rules of engagement are necessary. By analogy\, this extends to the rules of intergovernmental relations. The rules have changed. As data is the new source of future value\, identity becomes the main issue in the next decade. \nGoods\, persons\, houses\, situations and Industrial processes all radiate data and create digital twins. These twins exist as sets of properties in an analytic layer that is in many hands now but not really under multi stakeholder control. The situation is hybrid in the sense that the digital twins actually begin to actuate back in the analogue objects. This is the moment of ontological change. \nWith Petros Kavassalis (UAEGAN)\, Rob Tiffany (Ericsson)\, Gael Blondelle (Eclipse Foundation) and Michele Nati (IOTA).\nModerator: Rob van Kranenburg

SUMMARY:NGI @ MyData 2020
DESCRIPTION:A sustainable internet for a greener data economy\nNGI FUNDING: A SUSTAINABLE INTERNET FOR A GREENER DATA ECONOMY\nPresenters: Dr Giovanni Rimassa\, Dr Monique Calisti\nHost: Dr Monique Calisti \nGoal: To present the Next Generation Internet initiative and invite newcomers to join\, calling attention to the main challenges and opportunities to transform the internet of today into a more inclusive\, trustworthy\, democratic\, resilient and sustainable one. \nDescription:\nThe Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative (ngi.eu) has been launched by the European Commission with the ambition to gather and empower the community of researchers and innovators in Europe at work to transform the Internet in a way that it responds to people’s fundamental needs\, including trust\, security\, and inclusion\, while reflecting the values and norms all citizens enjoy in Europe. The NGI has been evolving and growing right from its inception\, gathering a large community of about 550 Internet researchers and innovators supported in 366 third-party projects. These projects cover a number of applications and technological building blocks that are essential to improve both the way the internet works and how it empowers people and communities. \nAs a matter of fact\, the internet and its supporting technologies are essential to accelerate the twin digital and green transitions our society and economy need\, especially to overcome the major crisis induced by the COVID19 pandemic. However\, while advanced internet technologies are essential for this transition to happen rapidly and efficiently\, they are also part of a major problem: the overall impact on the environment of digital technologies themselves. \nData traffic is increasing tremendously (+25% on average a year)\, corresponding to 55% of the annual energy consumption of the whole ICT sector. This year\, due to the COVID19 pandemic and its effects on our lives\, the Internet traffic\, for instance\, has been generally 25% to 30% higher than usual. This leads of course to an enormous growth of energy consumption\, which calls technologists\, policy makers\, private and public organisations to adopt the proper measures to move to a more sustainable internet in the wider context of a greener data economy. \nIn this session\, in line with the vision recently presented in the  “Vision for the future internet” NGI working paper\, we will discuss and present challenges\, opportunities and recent initiatives that focus on the development and promotion of green digital technologies for a more sustainable internet in the context of a greener data economy.

SUMMARY:NGI @ MyData 2020
DESCRIPTION:FUNDING INNOVATION THROUGH THE NEXT GENERATION INTERNET (NGI) INITIATIVE\nSession Host & Presenter: David Seoane \nGoal: Present an overview of the available funding opportunities provided by the Next Generation Internet initiative through open calls. This initiative aim at funding the next Internet researchers and innovators to address technological opportunities around the following areas: privacy and trust\, search and discovery\, decentralised architectures\, blockchain\, Internet of Things\, social media\, interactive technologies\, as well as technologies supporting multilingualism and accessibility. \nDescription: The session will provide an overview of current and future open calls provided by the initiative\, that are managed through the cascade funding mechanism under the Horizon 2020 programme. This mechanism consists of an agile and simple process where the funding is distributed through ongoing NGI Research and Innovation Actions (RIAs) that provide support to projects from outstanding academic researchers\, hi-tech startups and SMEs.\nFunding is allocated to projects using short research cycles targeting the most promising ideas. Each of the selected projects pursue their own objectives\, while the NGI RIAs provide the programme logic and vision\, technical support\, coaching and mentoring\, to ensure that projects contribute towards a significant advancement of research and innovation in the NGI initiative.\nThe focus is on advanced concepts and technologies that link to relevant use cases and that can have an impact on the market and society over all. Applications and services that innovate without a research component are not covered by this model.
