SUMMARY:NGI Forward at IOTSWC Barcelona DIGITAL SUMMIT 2020
DESCRIPTION:Salon: Disposable Identities and Digital Twins\nThe world rapidly shifts from analogue to digital. Rules have now changed with self-driving connected cars that make decisions not on ‘real’ events but on data streams that can enable predictive analytics and many other forms of augmented decision. These data streams\, now can act in the car without the knowledge of the driver. As data becomes as importantб or more important than territory as a means to power (defined as funding capability of future value) new rules of engagement are necessary. By analogy\, this extends to the rules of intergovernmental relations. The rules have changed. As data is the new source of future value\, identity becomes the main issue in the next decade. \nGoods\, persons\, houses\, situations and Industrial processes all radiate data and create digital twins. These twins exist as sets of properties in an analytic layer that is in many hands now but not really under multi stakeholder control. The situation is hybrid in the sense that the digital twins actually begin to actuate back in the analogue objects. This is the moment of ontological change. \nWith Petros Kavassalis (UAEGAN)\, Rob Tiffany (Ericsson)\, Gael Blondelle (Eclipse Foundation) and Michele Nati (IOTA).\nModerator: Rob van Kranenburg

SUMMARY:NGI @ MyData 2020
DESCRIPTION:A sustainable internet for a greener data economy\nNGI FUNDING: A SUSTAINABLE INTERNET FOR A GREENER DATA ECONOMY\nPresenters: Dr Giovanni Rimassa\, Dr Monique Calisti\nHost: Dr Monique Calisti \nGoal: To present the Next Generation Internet initiative and invite newcomers to join\, calling attention to the main challenges and opportunities to transform the internet of today into a more inclusive\, trustworthy\, democratic\, resilient and sustainable one. \nDescription:\nThe Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative (ngi.eu) has been launched by the European Commission with the ambition to gather and empower the community of researchers and innovators in Europe at work to transform the Internet in a way that it responds to people’s fundamental needs\, including trust\, security\, and inclusion\, while reflecting the values and norms all citizens enjoy in Europe. The NGI has been evolving and growing right from its inception\, gathering a large community of about 550 Internet researchers and innovators supported in 366 third-party projects. These projects cover a number of applications and technological building blocks that are essential to improve both the way the internet works and how it empowers people and communities. \nAs a matter of fact\, the internet and its supporting technologies are essential to accelerate the twin digital and green transitions our society and economy need\, especially to overcome the major crisis induced by the COVID19 pandemic. However\, while advanced internet technologies are essential for this transition to happen rapidly and efficiently\, they are also part of a major problem: the overall impact on the environment of digital technologies themselves. \nData traffic is increasing tremendously (+25% on average a year)\, corresponding to 55% of the annual energy consumption of the whole ICT sector. This year\, due to the COVID19 pandemic and its effects on our lives\, the Internet traffic\, for instance\, has been generally 25% to 30% higher than usual. This leads of course to an enormous growth of energy consumption\, which calls technologists\, policy makers\, private and public organisations to adopt the proper measures to move to a more sustainable internet in the wider context of a greener data economy. \nIn this session\, in line with the vision recently presented in the  “Vision for the future internet” NGI working paper\, we will discuss and present challenges\, opportunities and recent initiatives that focus on the development and promotion of green digital technologies for a more sustainable internet in the context of a greener data economy.

During the past 20 years\, he has participated in the interactive multimedia project of Steven Spielberg\, Disney World\, Japanese IT enterprise project and the design of social networking application of Facebook\, and he also developed the visual programming environment Ardublock for Arduino and started and worked for many open-source software projects. \nWith David Cuartelles from Arduino and Ramona Dremljuga from TETRA | Business Acceleration for Next Generation Internet | business.ngi.eu \n\nLinks:\n\n“Beyond Silicon Valley. Can Asian countries develop an Alternative Innovation Narrative?”\nhttps://www.szoil.org/ric-webinar-series/\nInside Shenzhen’s race to outdo Silicon Valley\nhttps://www.technologyreview.com/2018/12/18/1661/inside-shenzhens-race-to-outdo-silicon-valley/\nArduino is an open-source electronics platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software. Arduino boards are able to read inputs – light on a sensor\, a finger on a button\, or a Twitter message – and turn it into an output – activating a motor\, turning on an LED\, publishing something online. You can tell your board what to do by sending a set of instructions to the microcontroller on the board. To do so you use the Arduino programming language (based on Wiring)\, and the Arduino Software (IDE)\, based on Processing.\nhttps://www.arduino.cc/en/Guide/Introduction\nTETRA project provides business support to third parties awarding NGI open calls issued by NGI-TRUST\, NGI0-PET\, LEDGER\, NGI0-DISCOVERY and by those projects who will be funded under H2020 call ICT-24-2019.\nhttps://ngi.eu/ngi-projects/tetra/

SUMMARY:HubIT webinar
DESCRIPTION:The Next Generation Internet: A Guide to the New Concept and its Opportunities\nThe Next Generation Internet (NGI) has the potential to disrupt our economy\, society\, and environment even more than internet technologies have changed our world over the last “emerging-Internet” years. \nTo develop a human-centric internet\, where technology is utilized as a powerful tool to serve the core European values of equality and democracy\, there must be the right priorities and framework set. NGI – European Commission initiative aims to develop the current Internet in terms of service and speed and launch an entirely new range of applications which will transform the current use of the Internet. The opportunities of such worldwide change will be uncovered during three presentations throughout the webinar. \n“Introduction to the Next Generation Internet: The Internet of Humans” by Robert Miskuf (Pedal Consulting) \nThe Next Generation Internet (NGI) is a European Commission initiative that aims to shape the development and evolution of the Internet into an Internet of Humans. The focus is on advanced technologies including privacy and trust\, search and discovery\, decentralized architectures\, blockchain\, Internet of Things\, social media\, interactive technologies\, as well as technologies supporting multilingualism and accessibility. To ensure durable impact NGI also provides mentoring to help bring research and innovation outcomes to the market. \nIn his presentation\, Robert Miskuf from PEDAL Consulting (a partner of the TETRA project which acts as a business accelerator for NGI) will present the most relevant actions in this field. \n“The Next Generation Internet – Re-thinking the Digital Agenda Towards the Society” by Jose Gonzalez (Australo) \nJose’s presentation will outline what are the key values of the Next Generation Internet (NGI) and what that actually means. The roadmap which shapes the human-centered Internet will be presented as the ideology that the people-centered Internet works to make sure the Internet is a positive force for good\, improving the lives and well-being of people around the world. The presentation of “Digital Agenda” will underline the need for defining such a strategy\, giving examples like the empowerment of women in STEM\, and the significant role that mobility programmes have over the professional careers of talented researchers and entrepreneurs. \n“Trusted and Reliable Content on Future Blockchains” by Mirko Lorenz (TruBlo) \nThe presentation will address the importance of ensuring truthful content online as the amount of fake news or misleading and false information presented as news increases each year. The main topic of the presentation spans the fight against dis- and mal-information and with regard to Next Generation Internet (NGI) – a vision of useful\, trusted content for society as a whole.

SUMMARY:The Overweb Challenge
DESCRIPTION:The Overweb Challenge: hack your idea of what the Internet can be\nThe Internet is the Wild Wild West. People believe what they read on the web but they shouldn’t. It was not always that way. The web started out as communities of researchers sharing knowledge within their field. But search and social media algorithms along with fake accounts have created an Internet of silos. People and information are isolated in polarized bubbles that channel their attention with fake virality. This is enabled by browsers that make the Internet flat and static\, while treating people and information as commodities. \nBut browsers have the potential to connect information and access the Internet in its full dimensionality. We can have a deeply connected Internet that layers knowledge on top of web pages. We can have an Internet of Ideas. \nWe are building browser extensions and network protocols to access the Overweb\, a trust layer over the webpage that provides deep layers of context for any idea on the web enabling you to discern what you can believe on the web. Just as the Wild Wild West ultimately became Silicon Valley\, the Internet will evolve into the Overweb.

SUMMARY:Monitoring Digital Transformation
DESCRIPTION:Monitoring Digital Transformation: The role of Artificial Intelligence in the Industrial Modernisation\nArtificial intelligence has rapidly gained in importance and diffusion and is now beyond the nascent phase. This workshop will review in detail the demand and supply dynamics related to the AI pointing to the opportunities\, most promising use cases and future potential arising from Artificial Intelligence. \nAI’s potential in terms of future growth and socio-economic impacts is impressive. As a general-purpose technology\, it is expected to be adopted in a variety of ways by all industries and by a multitude of actors. Indeed\, the COVID-19 pandemic has underlined the centrality of AI (for example in contact tracing) in countering the disease. Nonetheless\, the deployment of AI use cases is hindered by multiple challenges and implementation barriers. To reap concrete business opportunities\, enterprises must be aware of these challenges and of the countermeasures that industry and policy makers are trying to implement in Europe. \nAfter an introduction on ATI project and an overview of the main trends in AI\, the workshop will explore policies\, initiatives and services that are being developed to foster AI adoption and will discuss on the impact those initiatives have on end users\, especially SMEs. \nRegister at the link below:\nhttps://ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/runner/ATIWORKSHOPAI25012021

DESCRIPTION:NGI-Assure’s Open Call for Technical R&D projects is open! And we are ready to tell you all about it in the NGI-Assure First Open Call Webinar: Get up to €50k to build a reliable Internet for all\, to be held on Tuesday 26th January at 10:00 – 11:00 CEST \n Register now for the webinar! \nThe internet lies at the heart of our modern economies and societies\, but it was not designed to be used in the way we use it now. Additional innovations are needed\, in particular to make usage of remote resources on the internet more trustworthy and secure. We will select the most innovative and useful projects through a series of competitive open calls. Projects will receive financial\, technical and business support. \nWe are looking for technical R&D projects that provide some form of assurance regarding any aspect of the internet and the way we use it today or will use it tomorrow. How do we know whether some person is who she claims to be? How can we tell a specific resource on the internet is genuine? How do we assert provenance and integrity? And how can we make this transparent and privacy friendly? \nWe prefer concrete and viable outcomes. The technology you propose should be relevant to the long-term evolution of the internet and in the interest of actual internet users in the real world. Show us that your idea solves a problem\, and what you need to make it happen. \nLearn about the objectives of NGI Assure\, its open calls and what you can get out of the programme. During this webinar\, we will explain the requirements of the call\, the type of solutions we are looking for\, and the funding and services that selected projects will receive. \nAGENDA\n\n10:00 – Presentation of the NGI Initiative\nMichiel Leenars\, NLnet\n10:15 – Presentation of NGI Assure objectives and its Open Calls\nNuno Manarte\, FundingBox\n10:30 – Questions & Answers from participants\nMichiel Leenars\, NLnet; Nuno Manarte\, FundingBox\n11:00 – End of the session\n\n Register now for the webinar!

SUMMARY:NGI Forward: dialogues on the future of search
DESCRIPTION:Salon: The future of Information access for search and discovery in next generation internet\nRegister early: https://app.livestorm.co/made-group/dialogues-on-data-and-search-the-future-of-information-and-search \nOn January 27th probe the following questions: What are the key needs of tomorrow’s search and discovery\, what are the distributed infrastructure needs and how are algorithms that give ‘top’ results validated? What are the data policy guidelines and governance thereof? What are user’s unmet needs to ‘discover’ tomorrow’s world? Do diverse human languages and values play a local role in the global search context of zeroes and ones? And is there room for a citizens fair data deal that leads to reliable and verifiable information and data trusts? How do individual (eg right to be forgotten) and collective rights (to know) make searching more public\, more transparent or more ethical by design? \nBy decentralising search & retrieval\, and by making future acts machine-processed\, and services composable in realtime\, there still remains a wide gap to fill: to gain quality and discoverability. Open standards can help. Service composability joins multiple independent sources of federated search without a single search authority point of presence. The ethical search would apply a variety of ethical filters to search results\, plus mechanisms for collective action to feed those filters\, making values transparent or visible inside future AI search. Trust benefits usage\, instead of lamenting lack of trust in commercial providers like Amazon.  In ‘The Age of Continuous Connection 24/7’ it may be time to change our unsustainable business models. \nWE WANT YOUR INPUT AND IDEAS: Go tell.edgeryders.eu \nWe invite experts to give their recommendations for NGI. Three EU funded H2020 projects in this domain join this event: NGI FORWARD\, NGI0 Discovery\, and NGI Assure.  We invite others to also join. The expected outcome is to contribute to the next generation EU research funding\, a better understanding and cohesive EU efforts to submit innovative ideas for open calls. Meeting organizers include the IoT Council & Edgeryders for NGI FORWARD\, NLnet Foundation for NGI Discovery and Assure and ELONTECH. \nRegister early: https://app.livestorm.co/made-group/dialogues-on-data-and-search-the-future-of-information-and-search \n11:00 – 16:00 | Workshops: The Future of Search\nWorkshops are on Big Blue Button\,  hosted by TU. SUMMARY:Citizen Control of Personal Data
DESCRIPTION:New Initiative “Citizen Control of Personal Data” within the Citizen Focus Action Cluster\nOn January 27th\, 2021\, the Smart Cities Marketplace will launch its new Initiative “Citizen Control of Personal Data” within the Citizen Focus Action Cluster. We kindly invite you to join us from 15 to 17 h and learn more the initiative’s approach to handling personal data. \nEnormous changes will take place in the next few years in the field of data\, moving from the current large-corporation approach\, where personal data is collected for narrow commercial benefit\, to an approach aiming at the greater good of society and the economy. \nThe intention of the “Citizen Control of Personal Data” initiative is to contribute to speeding up the adoption\, at scale\, of common open urban data platforms\, and ensure that 300 million European citizens are served by cities with competent urban data platforms\, by 2025. The potential for citizen’s personal data to contribute to data ecosystems will be significantly enhanced by introducing secure\, ethical and legal access to this highly coveted and valuable personal data\, incorporating citizen-generated data as “city data“. \nThe “Citizen Control of Personal Data” initiative will seek to remove existing obstacles and help build the conditions and relationships whereby the citizen will be willing to share personal data with a city and with other actors in the data economy. The ambition behind this new initiative is to give the smart cities movement a boost by providing cities with access to a rich personal data pool. This pool of data\, in turn\, would stimulate further activity within the data economy\, accelerate the take-up of urban data platforms and contribute to the improvement of mobility\, health\, energy efficiency and better governance among other. \nYou can register for the initiative launch here.
