SUMMARY:ODI Summit 2021 – Data People
DESCRIPTION:Summit 2021 –  Data <> People\nTaking place online\, this year’s ODI Summit explores the relationship between people and data. \nOver the past year\, the role that data plays in our lives has come into sharper focus: from the news stories we read to the apps where we report our health and the services we use every day. \nWe have all become ‘data people’ – more conscious than ever of the data we produce\, use and share\, and the decisions made using data about us. \nNever again can data be the preserve of an expert minority. It is increasingly the lifeblood of businesses\, communities and society at large. And when these groups work together\, the data becomes so much more valuable to everyone.

SUMMARY:IoT 2021
DESCRIPTION:The 11th International Conference on the Internet of Things (IoT 2021)\, which will take place in an online setting from Nov. 8 – Nov. 11 2021\, is the premier forum to share and discuss cutting edge research in all areas of development for the Internet of Things. \nThe IoT 2021 Conference will be held this year in Switzerland\, a country known for its chocolates and cheeses. SUMMARY:Policy Forum: Initiative for European Public Space
DESCRIPTION:Democracies can only function properly if they are underpinned by a public sphere. But online spaces are controlled by private interests and traditional media is giving us mostly national perspectives. The inhabitants of Europe lack the space to debate a shared interest for Europeans\, based on solid facts and a culture of care. We need a media landscape in Europe which re-constitutes the citizen at the centre of public debate. And we need European digital infrastructure that is based on values of collaboration\, sharing and safeguarding privacy and freedom of people. \nIn partnership with NESTA and the SDEPS coalition we host a forum on how Europe can provide alternatives for both the profit-driven big tech companies\, as well as for media reporting through national lenses? The debate will involve media\, journalists\, civil society and policymakers\, to debate pathways to a more open\, inclusive and democratic European public sphere. SUMMARY:NGI ASSURE webinar on future of OpenPGP
DESCRIPTION:State-of-the-art work on chains of trust\nThis freely accessible online event on November 23 from 10 to 11 CET organized by NGI Assure dives into the future of OpenPGP encryption. Researchers and developers funded by different NGI programmes discuss their work on PGP-related technology and how to advance the state of art in decentralized trust. \nDespite the rise of mobile messengers and chat apps\, email continues to be an integral communication channel on the internet. But like core internet technologies\, email was not designed with privacy and security in mind. To combat growing problems like phishing\, spam and surveillance\, various methods of encryption provide confidentiality\, authentication and integrity of data. OpenPGP is a widely used email encryption standard (defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force in RFC 4880) derived from Phil Zimmerman’s PGP. Implementations of OpenPGP are used for a wide range of purposes\, to sign\, encrypt and decrypt texts\, emails\, files\, directories and disks. OpenPGP-compatible systems also allow users to create their own ‘web of trust’\, where people accumulate and sign each others keys for trusted communication without a central point of authority. \nDecentralized encryption\, authentication and integrity checking are important requirements for trustworthy communication and data handling. That is why the Next Generation Internet initiative funds various R&D-projects that advance the state of art in OpenPGP-implementations and chains of trust. In this freely accessible online event OpenPGP-projects funded by NGI Assure and NGI0 PET present and discuss their ongoing work\, and think about the future of the technology they contribute to. \nWant to know more? No prior registration is needed\, simply join the online webinar on Tuesday November 23rd at 10:00 CET. The event is organized using BigBlueButton\, an open source webconferencing framework which is actively supported by NGI Zero to add end-to-end encrypted chat. \nPresentations (5-10 min)\n\nNeal H. Walfield — Improving OpenSSH authentication and PKI through OpenPGP\nHeiko Schaefer — Developing and hardening an OpenPGP certificate authority for group trust management\nmuppeth — GnuPG-based email encryption for emails at rest\nWiktor Kwapisiewicz — Add support for trusted platform modules (TPM) to Sequoia PGP\nJustus Winter — Drop-in replacement for widely used encryption software GnuPG (GNU Privacy Guard)\nUli Fouquet — Add plug & play encryption to customer relationship management system\nOther speakers still to be confirmed

SUMMARY:NGI Impact Conference
DESCRIPTION:Explore divergent futures and discover how you can help shape a better tomorrow.\nDiscover how alternative economic systems\, rooted in real-life scenarios and writ large\, would work in complex societies. Discuss what potential exists for new\, sustainable technologies – especially those that might be critical in bringing about more resilient futures.  \nThe last two years have been a stark lesson in how global events can affect people’s lives on a personal level. \nThese are the themes that the NGI Impact Conference explores. Through a program of live and online events\, conference participants take a look at all-encompassing philosophies\, sweeping economic policies and historic social trends\, and asks what these might look like through the eyes of ordinary people living through them. \nThrough experimentation\, play and discussion\, the NGI Impact Conference is an exercise in asking the question “How can we use Internet Technologies to make the world better?” \nWhat is Witness?\nThe event takes place in a fictional setting designed to give people the chance to explore themes around climate change\, technology and economics through gameplay\, discussion and storytelling. \nThe setting is called “Witness”\, a collection of artificial islands floating on the ocean of a future Earth devastated by climate change. Each island\, or “distrikt”\, is closely connected to every other\, but also has its own unique identity\, philosophy and systems. Each distrikt acts as a sandbox to try out different economic and political ideas. \nWitness is a place where people can imagine societies unrestricted by conventional ideas about “how things have always been”\, but must still operate within the real-world boundaries of plausible technology and the plurality of human nature. Learn more here. \nA Card Game to anchor NGI debates in desirable futures\nThe Witness card game creates a space where players can experiment with the ideas proposed by Witness\, using the rules of gameplay to reflect the real world constraints those ideas must operate in. \nIn the game each distrikt has a deck of cards including a range of policies and tools reflecting that distrikt’s philosophy. Throughout the game players are faced with various challenges and crises\, using their deck\, either collaboratively or competitively with other players\, or by themselves\, to respond. A single distrikt’s deck can be used to demonstrate how one school of thought might succeed or fail\, while multiple decks can be combined to create the player’s idea of a perfect society. \nAs well as being an engaging and fun game\, we want the Witness card game to serve as a springboard and space for discussion. As people play Witness they will think and talk about how society should deal with challenges ranging from environmental catastrophe to pandemics\, to how new technologies will affect us all. \nMore specifically we will explore insights on we can draw on how we should build\, monetise and regulate the Next Generation of Internet Technologies so that they contribute to the wellbeing of people and planet. \nWhy Participate\nThis event is a unique opportunity to \n\nImagine alternate\, better futures and how you and your organisation can help make it happen.\nConnect with experts who can help ensure the ideas are practical.\nAccess people with the skills and networks needed to bring them into reality.\n\nHow to participate?\nYou have three options\, described in more detail here. \n\nHosting a game session near you\nJoining as a Player\nWriter’s contest\n\nJoin us and use Witness as the basis for building careers\, businesses and institutions that work to improve\, not harm\, the wellbeing of people and the planet. \nRegister Now\nParticipation is free of charge\, but tickets are limited. Click here to secure your ticket now.

SUMMARY:IGF21 | Open Forum #67 Access to the Open Internet
DESCRIPTION:IGF 2021 Open Forum #67 Access to the Open Internet: benefits\, challenges and policy approaches\nIGF 2021 MAIN FOCUS: Universal access and meaningful connectivity \nPractical locally-driven policy solutions: What lessons can be drawn (and how) from successful policy solutions to universal access and meaningful connectivity around the world\, while taking into account local specificities and needs? In particular\, what are the relevant practices implemented by local actors (local government\, civil society\, local providers and entrepreneurs) to advance universal and meaningful access? \nKey questions\nAccess to the Open Internet\, not only telecom connectivity\, is a key challenge to ensure meaningful connectivity and bridge the digital divide. Why does access to the Open Internet matter\, what are the challenges operators\, governments\, and end-users face in rolling out and accessing the Open Internet\, and how to overcome them? What infrastructures and technologies do we need to boost access to the Open Internet? What are the policy approaches and digital cooperation mechanisms to promote the Open Internet globally? \nOverview of the issue\nAllowing access to the Open Internet and the vast array of online services and information it provides should be a central\, inherent component in the global efforts to provide meaningful connectivity to all and bridge the digital divide. The Open Internet is a key driver for innovation\, socio-political\, economic\, and cultural development. It enables people in multiple ways: knowledge- and ideas- sharing\, skills development\, research and innovation\, entrepreneurship\, expression of opinions\, interaction with governments\, participation in societal and political debates\, etc. Trustworthy data flows based on the Open Internet empower small and medium-sized enterprises to enter value chains\, develop new services\, contributing to job and GDP growth. In particular\, ensuring full access to the Open Internet is a real opportunity for developing countries to deliver the above benefits to their citizens in a cost-efficient manner while protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms online. \nOpen Internet deployment faces a number of challenges that might impede fully harvesting the benefits above such as a weaker development of the local Internet ecosystem\, lower connection speeds and service quality\, limited national and international connectivity\, but also government control – including possible internet shutdowns\, loss of privacy and security\, etc. Connectivity policies should then cover the deployment and upgrade of key internet technologies\, standards (e.g. IPv6 for future-proof IP connectivity; QUIC for enhanced data transport\, etc.) and infrastructures (e.g. international connectivity\, Internet Exchange Points\, data centers)\, and provide regulatory support towards building dynamic\, trustful and democratic local Internet ecosystems that can guarantee secure and stable access to the Open Internet. The forum will take stock of current initiatives to develop access to the Open Internet and reflect how effective partnerships between governments\, industry\, and civil society can help developing countries develop Open Internet connectivity for the benefit of all their citizens. \nApproach\nThe sessions will be organised around several interventions from various stakeholders from the public and private sector and from civil society\, from different geographic regions including developing countries and countries providing foreign aid in the digital sector. It will give ample space for interaction with the participants\, in order to provide a broad perspective on the issue and stimulate the discussion. It will aim to explore the above-mentioned challenges and trigger reflection and constructive approach on how to improve access to the Open Internet as a means for digital development and safe\, prosper and inclusive digital societies. \n\nHow will you design the session to ensure the best possible experience for the online and on-site participants? The sessions will be organised in a way that allows interventions both online (chat and Q&A pods) and on-site. The answers would be provided to the full (online and onsite) audience attending the session. We are also in the process of contacting our internal experts to shape the session in the most valuable way. The EC has vast experience in organising online\, on-site and hybrid meetings.\nIf the speakers and organizers will all be online\, how will you ensure interactions between them and the participants (including with on-site participants)? Given that the session would be hybrid\, there will be at least 1 or 2 panelists/speakers present on-site. In addition\, the approach shaped under 1) would take into consideration this question should COVID-related difficulties persist.\nAre you planning to use complementary tools/platforms to increase participation and interaction during the session? The EC will reach out to all its networks and Delegations around the world to promote the session and ensure high-level participation. We have access to and can implement complementary communication tools as appropriate.\n\nOrganizers\nEuropean Commission \nSpeakers\n\nMr. Yoichi IIDA\, Deputy Director-General for G7 and G20 Relations\, Global Strategy Bureau\, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications\, Japan\nMr. Esteve SANZ\, Head of Sector Internet Governance and Multi-stakeholder Dialogue\, European Commission\nMs. Mame Maty TALL\, Representative of Sonatel\nDr. Raquel GATTO\, IGF Secretariat Consultant\, Policy Network on Meaningful Access Facilitator\n\nOnsite Moderator\nDr. Tereza HOREJSOVA\, Director Project and Partnerships\, Diplo/Geneva Internet Platform \nOnline Moderator\nLaura Ferre Sanjuan\, European Commission \nRapporteur\nVelimira Nemiguentcheva-Grau\, European Commission

SUMMARY:eSSIF-Lab webinar
DESCRIPTION:WEBINAR: Find out all about the final eSSIF-Lab “Completing the Framework” Open Call\nJoin eSSIF-Lab’s live webinar and find out everything about the current “Completing the Framework” Open Call. There’s €212K available! \nREGISTER HERE! \nAbout this event\nOver the past years\, the question of how we can protect our identity in the world of online has been getting more heated. The Self-Sovereign Identity paradigm stepped in with the idea itself\, that everyone should be in charge of their own digital personal information\, and that it is the data owner who should decide on how this data is being used and by whom. \nIn addition\, eSSIF-Lab Framework (at GitLab) will be built upon the open-source components provided through its Infrastructure-oriented open call and the generic SSI-based services and applications (being developed with the support of the eSSIF-Lab 1st Business-oriented Programme) and the SSI domain-oriented solutions addressing real-world needs or opportunities (that will be supported by the eSSIF-Lab 2nd Business-oriented Programme). \neSSIF-Lab kicked off one last additional Open Call “Completing the framework”\, on the 15th of November\, lasting until the 15th of January. \nJOIN THE WEBINAR and find out everything about the Open Call! \n\nMore info at https://spaces.fundingbox.com/spaces/ngi-next-generation-internet-ngi-news-events/61b868267cf08f133dbecb9a

SUMMARY:Webinar: Visual Thinking Strategy
DESCRIPTION:Visual Thinking Strategy\nWhen: 25 January 2022 at 16:00 CET\nWhere: Online \nWebinar powered by TETRA and NGI Atlantic.eu \nThe webinar focuses on identifying the product/service Unique Selling Proposition (USP) and work on a concept extracted from it using modalities that are usually not explored (Visual Thinking Strategy). This is the best way to stretch the brain and give birth to new ideas\, free of preconceived notions\, that will be useful in business or elsewhere in life. Thinking visually and spatially helps tackle complex problems by seeing how interdependent pieces fit together. \n \nStrategies for visual learning\nIf you teach as part of a formal institution or in a business training capacity\, you can use the Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) methodology to encourage flexible thinking with the help of a single\, interesting image and three simple questions: \n\nWhat’s going on in this picture?\nWhat do you see that makes you say that?\nWhat more can we find?\n\nMuch like a brainstorming session\, the goal of a VTS discussion is to enable shared discovery\, learning\, and insight rather than to disseminate knowledge. Encouraging the contribution of individual ideas in this way has been shown to deepen the learner’s observation\, collaboration\, and communication skills in an international setting. \nREGISTER HERE!
