SUMMARY:TETRA Webinar: Funding your Open Source project
DESCRIPTION:When: 21 September 2021\nWhere: Online \nThis webinar is dedicated to the sustainability of open source projects. The webinar is divided into two parts – firstly we will discuss various nonprofit business models and secondly take a look at crowdfunding for open source projects. \n\nDr Melanie Rieback will give you insights on why it is important to look into various business models and engage users in order to develop a product that will be successful in the long run. Several nonprofit business models that allow the open source community to financially support themselves in an independent way will be discussed. In the second part of the webinar Andrew “bunnie” Huang will share his crowdfunding journey. He will talk about why he chose this funding option\, which platform he chose and how he executed the campaign. He will also share some key success factors that supported the funding journey on the crowdfunding platform. \nAs a result of this event\, you will be able to develop long-term funding strategies for your open source project. \nNo prior registration is needed. The link of the event: HTTPS://BBB.TBM.TUDELFT.NL/B/GRE-CN6-FEK-YGH\nSpeakers\n\nDr. Melanie Rieback is CEO/Co-founder of Radically Open Security\, the world’s first not-for-profit computer security company. SUMMARY:Safer Internet Forum 2021
DESCRIPTION:The Safer Internet Forum (SIF) is a key annual conference in Europe where policy makers\, researchers\, law enforcement bodies\, youth\, parents and carers\, teachers\, NGOs\, industry representatives\, experts and other relevant actors come together to discuss the latest trends\, opportunities\, risks and solutions related to child online safety. This year’s edition will take place online and will explore how to make Europe’s Digital Decade fit for children and young people. \nTherefore\, the 2021 Safer Internet Forum will showcase key findings from the recent digital principles consultation\, amplifying the voices of children and young people to deliver a vision for a #DigitalDecade4YOUth. The event will highlight the priorities that different groups\, including parents\, carers and teachers\, have identified in order to fulfil children’s rights in a digital world while allowing them to engage\, create and contribute within safe\, ethical and inclusive online spaces. \n \nSIF 2021 will take place online on Wednesday\, 6 and Thursday\, 7 October 2021 and will consider what we want the digital world to look like in 2030. We will hear from a number of leading experts in the field who will offer their vision of the landscape over the next decade and discuss what key stakeholders need to do to ensure that we have the internet that we want and need. Importantly\, the voices of young people will be present throughout the Forum as they share their hopes and concerns for their futures online. \nAdditionally\, a number of deep-dive sessions will explore in more depth the four pillars of the current BIK Strategy which provides a holistic approach to keeping children and young people safe online. Pillar 1 deals with high-quality content for children and young people\, Pillar 2 is concerned with stepping up awareness and empowerment\, Pillar 3 aims to create a safer online environment for children through approaches such as parental control tools and age verification\, while Pillar 4 leads the fight against child sexual abuse and child sexual exploitation. \n***Registration is now open***\nSafer Internet Forum (SIF) 2021 is organised by European Schoolnet on behalf of the European Commission in the framework of the EC’s Better Internet for Kids Strategy with funding provided by the Connecting Europe Facility programme (CEF). SUMMARY:NGI_TRUST Webinar Results #9
DESCRIPTION:From February 2019 to May 2020\, the NGI_Trust project ran three Open Calls to fund the development of a human-centric Internet through privacy and trust enhancing technologies. These calls attracted a significant number of applications and NGI_Trust was able to fund 57 projects focused on relevant innovations. Now that all of the funding has been allocated\, it is time to focus in on the funded projects and showcase their ideas and developments. NGI_Trust has started a series of webinars to do just this – and also to help build a community of innovators among the projects through shared ideas and principles. \nNGI_Trust will be continuing webinars with our projects during 2021. You can also find out more about the projects via the NGI_Trust twitter account and through the NGI blogposts. \nMore info on the NGI_Trust website.

SUMMARY:2021 BALKAN LAW & TECH SUMMIT
DESCRIPTION:Following the first Balkan Law and Tech Summit 2019 on the 4th Industrial Revolution in the Region\, organized by the European Law Observatory on New Technologies in Thessaloniki\, Greece \, we are looking forward to welcoming you to the 2021 virtual edition. \nCo-organized by the European Law Observatory on New Technologies-ELONTech and the Internet of Things-IoT Council\, this year’s agenda will cover topics such as: the digitalization of Justice\, AI and connectivity\, the digital rights and innovation infrastructure strategy in Balkans\, the 5G war. \nSAVE YOUR PLACE BY REGISTERING TODAY.\nThe Summit will be virtual\, in english and free. The Sessions and Agenda with guest Speakers\, soon to be announced. \n\nBALKAN SUMMIT ON LAW AND TECH 2021: INNOVATION & DEMOCRACY\nThe digitalization of Justice and the indicators of the political and societal progress in the Region. \n“We need more Europe”.\nBut where? In the popular big cities or the southeastern towns? The EU digital revolution ship has sailed with the Balkans left behind in the quay. Who is introducing the 4th Industrial Revolution to the Western Balkans\, then? \nAs the world is shifting towards political systems that are techno-political (the term to use is Cyber-physical Systems)\, it reverts back to the bipolar order of the Cold War\, not in terms of ideology but in terms of data strategies. On the one hand the data hegemony of the large US companies\, on the other hand the Chinese integration of infrastructure\, services\, applications with administrative management. The battlefield is the Balkans. In some countries we see the upper hand of GAFA and in others we see the influence of China. \nIn this virtual Summit we ask the question: Where is Europe? And what would the real purpose and direction be for the newest EU members? EU is still the regulatory powerhouse of the world\, but for how long if it is not coupled with infrastructural power and a real sense of mission? \nWe explore the level of digitalization of justice in the SE Europe and we try to measure the active influence of Europe Digital Market to Balkans. In this seminar we want to map the current situation and raise the awareness of what geopolotical strategies are operating in what many consider to the Europe’s backyard\, in reality it’s centre.

SUMMARY:ODI Summit 2021 – Data People
DESCRIPTION:Summit 2021 –  Data <> People\nTaking place online\, this year’s ODI Summit explores the relationship between people and data. \nOver the past year\, the role that data plays in our lives has come into sharper focus: from the news stories we read to the apps where we report our health and the services we use every day. \nWe have all become ‘data people’ – more conscious than ever of the data we produce\, use and share\, and the decisions made using data about us. \nNever again can data be the preserve of an expert minority. It is increasingly the lifeblood of businesses\, communities and society at large. And when these groups work together\, the data becomes so much more valuable to everyone.

SUMMARY:Policy Forum: Initiative for European Public Space
DESCRIPTION:Democracies can only function properly if they are underpinned by a public sphere. But online spaces are controlled by private interests and traditional media is giving us mostly national perspectives. The inhabitants of Europe lack the space to debate a shared interest for Europeans\, based on solid facts and a culture of care. We need a media landscape in Europe which re-constitutes the citizen at the centre of public debate. And we need European digital infrastructure that is based on values of collaboration\, sharing and safeguarding privacy and freedom of people. \nIn partnership with NESTA and the SDEPS coalition we host a forum on how Europe can provide alternatives for both the profit-driven big tech companies\, as well as for media reporting through national lenses? The debate will involve media\, journalists\, civil society and policymakers\, to debate pathways to a more open\, inclusive and democratic European public sphere. The debate is part of the projects MediActivism and Next Generation Internet – Forward. \nIf you would like to participate in the policy forum online or physically\, please register via this link. \nPublic conversation: How can EU policy foster digital European public spaces?\nHow can Europe provide alternatives for both the profit-driven big tech companies\, as well as for media reporting through national lenses? In a conversation with researchers\, media professionals\, civil society and policymakers\, we explore how EU policy can foster digital European public spaces. The conversation will be based on two case studies – MediActivism and SDEPS – and the outcomes of the round table sessions. \n\n17:00 Opening by André Wilkens\, European Cultural Foundation\n17:10 MediActivism – a case for citizen-centric media – by Charlie Tims and Ivana Pejić\n17:20 Next Generation Internet / Forward – a case for an internet of humans – by Katja Bego\n17:30 Panel discussion\nModerator: Juanlu Sánchez (Eldiario.es)\nWith: Nicola Frank (European Broadcasting Union)\, Ismail Einashe (Journalist\, Lost in Media)\, Latifa Oulkhouir (Le Bondy Blog)\, Paul Keller (Open Future)\, Christophe Leclercq (Euractiv)\n18:15 Response of funders and policy makers who worked on concrete initiatives (Reports\, legislative proposals on media)\, followed by conversation with the panelists and audience\nWith: Marijn Duijvestein (DG Connect)\, Ibán García del Blanco (EP\, S&D)\, Saskia van den Dool (Adessium Foundation) and Mieke van Heesewijk (SIDN Fund)\n18:55 Concluding remarks\n19:00 Networking reception\n\nAhead of the Policy Forum read the online version of the #mediactivism guide to claiming a right to your city. \nREGISTER NOW!

SUMMARY:NGI ASSURE webinar on future of OpenPGP
DESCRIPTION:State-of-the-art work on chains of trust\nThis freely accessible online event on November 23 from 10 to 11 CET organized by NGI Assure dives into the future of OpenPGP encryption. Researchers and developers funded by different NGI programmes discuss their work on PGP-related technology and how to advance the state of art in decentralized trust. \nDespite the rise of mobile messengers and chat apps\, email continues to be an integral communication channel on the internet. But like core internet technologies\, email was not designed with privacy and security in mind. To combat growing problems like phishing\, spam and surveillance\, various methods of encryption provide confidentiality\, authentication and integrity of data. OpenPGP is a widely used email encryption standard (defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force in RFC 4880) derived from Phil Zimmerman’s PGP. Implementations of OpenPGP are used for a wide range of purposes\, to sign\, encrypt and decrypt texts\, emails\, files\, directories and disks. OpenPGP-compatible systems also allow users to create their own ‘web of trust’\, where people accumulate and sign each others keys for trusted communication without a central point of authority. \nDecentralized encryption\, authentication and integrity checking are important requirements for trustworthy communication and data handling. That is why the Next Generation Internet initiative funds various R&D-projects that advance the state of art in OpenPGP-implementations and chains of trust. In this freely accessible online event OpenPGP-projects funded by NGI Assure and NGI0 PET present and discuss their ongoing work\, and think about the future of the technology they contribute to. \nWant to know more? No prior registration is needed\, simply join the online webinar on Tuesday November 23rd at 10:00 CET. The event is organized using BigBlueButton\, an open source webconferencing framework which is actively supported by NGI Zero to add end-to-end encrypted chat. \nPresentations (5-10 min)\n\nNeal H. Walfield — Improving OpenSSH authentication and PKI through OpenPGP\nHeiko Schaefer — Developing and hardening an OpenPGP certificate authority for group trust management\nmuppeth — GnuPG-based email encryption for emails at rest\nWiktor Kwapisiewicz — Add support for trusted platform modules (TPM) to Sequoia PGP\nJustus Winter — Drop-in replacement for widely used encryption software GnuPG (GNU Privacy Guard)\nUli Fouquet — Add plug & play encryption to customer relationship management system\nOther speakers still to be confirmed

SUMMARY:NGI Impact Conference
DESCRIPTION:Explore divergent futures and discover how you can help shape a better tomorrow.\nDiscover how alternative economic systems\, rooted in real-life scenarios and writ large\, would work in complex societies. Discuss what potential exists for new\, sustainable technologies – especially those that might be critical in bringing about more resilient futures.  \nThe last two years have been a stark lesson in how global events can affect people’s lives on a personal level. \nThese are the themes that the NGI Impact Conference explores. Through a program of live and online events\, conference participants take a look at all-encompassing philosophies\, sweeping economic policies and historic social trends\, and asks what these might look like through the eyes of ordinary people living through them. \nThrough experimentation\, play and discussion\, the NGI Impact Conference is an exercise in asking the question “How can we use Internet Technologies to make the world better?” \nWhat is Witness?\nThe event takes place in a fictional setting designed to give people the chance to explore themes around climate change\, technology and economics through gameplay\, discussion and storytelling. \nThe setting is called “Witness”\, a collection of artificial islands floating on the ocean of a future Earth devastated by climate change. Each island\, or “distrikt”\, is closely connected to every other\, but also has its own unique identity\, philosophy and systems. Each distrikt acts as a sandbox to try out different economic and political ideas. \nWitness is a place where people can imagine societies unrestricted by conventional ideas about “how things have always been”\, but must still operate within the real-world boundaries of plausible technology and the plurality of human nature. Learn more here. \nA Card Game to anchor NGI debates in desirable futures\nThe Witness card game creates a space where players can experiment with the ideas proposed by Witness\, using the rules of gameplay to reflect the real world constraints those ideas must operate in. \nIn the game each distrikt has a deck of cards including a range of policies and tools reflecting that distrikt’s philosophy. Throughout the game players are faced with various challenges and crises\, using their deck\, either collaboratively or competitively with other players\, or by themselves\, to respond. A single distrikt’s deck can be used to demonstrate how one school of thought might succeed or fail\, while multiple decks can be combined to create the player’s idea of a perfect society. \nAs well as being an engaging and fun game\, we want the Witness card game to serve as a springboard and space for discussion. As people play Witness they will think and talk about how society should deal with challenges ranging from environmental catastrophe to pandemics\, to how new technologies will affect us all. \nMore specifically we will explore insights on we can draw on how we should build\, monetise and regulate the Next Generation of Internet Technologies so that they contribute to the wellbeing of people and planet. \nWhy Participate\nThis event is a unique opportunity to \n\nImagine alternate\, better futures and how you and your organisation can help make it happen.\nConnect with experts who can help ensure the ideas are practical.\nAccess people with the skills and networks needed to bring them into reality.\n\nHow to participate?\nYou have three options\, described in more detail here. \n\nHosting a game session near you\nJoining as a Player\nWriter’s contest\n\nJoin us and use Witness as the basis for building careers\, businesses and institutions that work to improve\, not harm\, the wellbeing of people and the planet. \nRegister Now\nParticipation is free of charge\, but tickets are limited. Click here to secure your ticket now.
