SUMMARY:Luiss Debates - Ethics in the Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:Luiss Debates are created to foster interaction between scholars and the business community\, national and international institutions\, and different social actors. Thus\, by producing relevant and insightful knowledge that positively impacts the world\, they promote social sciences as actionable disciplines that can translate theories into social and economic progress. Over the past months\, Luiss Debates have been held on topics such as leadership\, artificial intelligence and innovation and sustainability.\nIn today’s debate\, Paolo Benanti\, Luciano Floridi and Giuseppe Italiano will share the stage to engage in a discussion on the ethical implications of technology in the digital age. \nPaolo Benanti is a Franciscan of the Third Order Regular from 1999. He has experience in the technical field with studies in Engineering and in the field of ethics with philosophical and theological studies. The doctoral research he has undertaken is meant to synthesize the competences acquired\, providing an original contribution to biomedical ethics. He works in academics as Professor in Moral Theology\, Bioethics and Neuroethics. At the same time he provides consulting in pastoral of healthcare and teaches refresher courses in bioethics for the training of parish workers. \nLuciano Floridi is OII‘s Professor of Philosophy and Ethics of Information at the University of Oxford\, Director of the Digital Ethics Lab of the Oxford Internet Institute\, and Professorial Fellow of Exeter College. He is Turing Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute and Chair of its Data Ethics Group\, Distinguished Research Fellow of the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics and Senior Member of the Oxford Faculty of Philosophy\, and Research Associate and Fellow in Information Policy of the Department of Computer Science. His research concerns primarily Digital Ethics (aka Information and Computer Ethics)\, the Philosophy of Information\, and the Philosophy of Technology. \nGiuseppe F. Italiano is Professor of Computer science at Luiss University.  His background\, which includes also a five-year experience in industrial research\, puts him in a unique position to carry out work that combines basic research with strong focus on applications. In 2016 Giuseppe was nominated EATCS Fellow for his “fundamental contributions to the design and analysis of algorithms for solving theoretical and applied problems in graphs and massive data sets\, and for his role in establishing the field of algorithm engineering”. \nWelcome address by Professor Alessandro Zattoni Dean of the Luiss Department of Business and Management.

SUMMARY:Next Generation Internet of Things Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Workshop on research priorities for the Next Generation of Internet of Things\nThe participants of the workshop “Next Generation Internet of Things” organized by the European Commission will discuss research and innovation actions as well as possible policy measures to be taken at EU level. The workshop addresses researchers\, industry\, application developers and start-ups. \n \nInternet of Things (IoT) technologies and applications are bringing fundamental changes to all sectors of society and economy and constitute an essential element of the Next Generation Internet (NGI). IoT technologies and applications are changing the way users\, services and applications interact with the real world environment in a trusted way. The European Commission supports the future research and innovation of IoT technologies and applications\, and therefore intends to discuss: \n\ntechnologies\nmarket drivers\nmain challenges in the area\n\nThese factors are bringing fundamental changes to all sectors of society and economy and constitute an essential element of the NGI. \nAbout the workshop\nThe workshop should discuss novel IoT concepts and solutions to underpin the NGI vision and make provision for predicting future events\, trigger actions and moving decisions to the point of interest in order to better serve the end-user. Participants should think of possible use cases with advanced needs in areas such as: \n\nwearables\ntransportation\nagriculture\nhomes\nhealth\nenergy\nmanufacturing\n\nThe workshop should reflect on key elements for drafting a roadmap for next generation IoT\, which is supported by the Coordination and Support Action (CSA) NGIoT. \nThe European Commission will support a first set of projects under the NGI umbrella through the call ICT-56-2020 Next Generation Internet of Things. This call has been opened on 9 July 2019 and it will close on 16 January 2020. During the afternoon\, a special session will give an opportunity to the participants to present their possible ideas. One session will be also organised by the IDEALIST in order to support match-making of the consortia. \nDownload the agenda here. \n\nThe participants of the workshop will be given opportunity to present 5 minutes pitches covering the topic. As these presentations will be strictly time limited they should be composed of maximum 5 slides. Please address you pitch presentations to CNECT-E4-EVENTS@ec.europa.eu by 14th October. The presentations will be then made available in the meeting room on the day of the event.

SUMMARY:European Big Data Value Forum (EBDVF)
DESCRIPTION:The European Big Data Value Forum (EBDVF) is the main event of the European Big Data and Data-Driven AI Research and Innovation community. In 2017 the Big Data Value Association (BDVA) and the European Commission (DG CNECT) joined forces to create this event fusion of the former EDF (European Data Forum) and the BDVA Summit. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis year EBDVF2019 is by BDVA\, in collaboration of the European Commission and VTT as the main local organizer. The European Big Data Value Forum 2019 aims to continue the success of previous editions\, where on average every year around 700 industry professionals\, business developers\, researchers\, and policymakers coming from 40 different countries attended the event. It will be organised in October and we expect 600 participants. The organiser committee of this event includes\, in addition to BDVA\, the EC and VTT\, multiple Finnish industrial\, Innovation and Research players as well as international companies and other research institutions. \nBDVA is an Industry-driven and fully self-financed an international non–for-profit organisation under Belgian law. BDVA has almost 200 members all over Europe with a well-balanced composition of large and small and medium-sized industries (over 30% of SMEs)\, as well as research and user organizations. SUMMARY:NGI Data Mapping Webinar
DESCRIPTION:NGI Data Mapping Webinar\n \nWe would like to invite you to join our webinar to explore the exciting data science methods and visualisations we developed as part of the Next Generation Internet Initiative\, and learn more about how you can use these kinds of data-driven insights in your own work. \n  \nOur data work\nOver the past year\, we’ve been laying the groundwork for building the research and funding agenda of the Next Generation Internet initiative\, the European Commission’s new flagship programme which seeks to build a more inclusive\, resilient and democratic future internet by the end of the next decade. As part of this work\, we used cutting-edge data-driven methods to map the latest trends in emerging technologies and social issues surrounding the internet. This webinar will showcase the most interesting insights we generated\, and guide you through using the methodologies developed DELab (Digital Economy Lab of the University of Warsaw) and Eurecat (Technology Centre of Catalonia)\, two partners in the EU Engineroom consortium. \nResearch clusters: Institutions who’s researcher work and publish together\nWhen it comes to making decisions about which new technologies or solutions to invest in\, where to focus our attention when it comes to future social challenges or other important decisions that require making our own guesses about what the future might hold\, we often rely on anecdotal evidence or outdated data\, such as company surveys or patent data (often a couple years behind the real trends). New big data methodologies have made it possible to use web data sources like Wikipedia\, Reddit\, Meetup or articles in the tech media\, which have proven much better at picking up early signals of change. In this webinar\, we will tell you more about how our data science team used\, for example\, natural language processing\, network analysis and machine learning to gather insights about how hacker communities talk about quantum computing\, where we find most startups active in the ethical AI  space\, or how the media has covered GDPR. \nAll the methodologies we’ve developed and the underlying data\, code and insights are freely available to the public\, have a look at our GitHub and Zenodo to learn more. Please also have a look at our interactive results page\, which will feature in the webinar. \nWant to know more? Do join us\, learn about our methods and ask any questions you might have. \n  \nThe NGI Data Mapping webinar\nIssue mapping across different areas and geographies\nThe NGI Data Mapping Webinar will give a brief introduction about the project\, after which we will have short presentations on different methods.  \nKristóf Gyódi and Michał Paliński will explain their quantitative text mining analysis\, based on a novel dataset of 140.000 technology news articles. The methodology implements various natural language processing techniques: analysis of term frequencies\, co-occurrences\, sentiment analysis and topic modeling. \nDavid Laniado (Eurecat)\, Laura Portell (Eurecat)\, and Cristian Consonni (University of Trento) will talk about using Wikipedia data to study for example the relationships between different internet-related topics and trends over time. \nParticipating in this webinar does not assume any prior technical knowledge. \nAgenda\n\n\n\nTime\nWebinar outline\nLead by\n\n\n14:00 (5 mins)\nIntroduction\nKatja Bego (Nesta) \n\n\n14:15 (15 mins)\nQuantitative Text Mining using NLP\nKristóf Gyódi\, Michał Paliński (DeLab)\n\n\n14:30 (15 mins)\nWikipedia Network Analysis: Temporal Trends Analysis on Reddit discussions \nDavid Laniado (Eurecat)\, Laura Portell (Eurecat)\, and Cristian Consonni (University of Trento)\n\n\n14:40 (25 mins)\nQ&As \nAll\n\n\n15:00\nFinish\nAll\n\n\n\n  \nYour hosts\nDELab is a transdisciplinary research institute established in 2014. SUMMARY:NGI SALON @ EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
DESCRIPTION:30 years of the Web: where do we go next?\nBuilding radical new alternatives for a more democratic future internet\nJoin us on Friday 22 March at the European Parliament for an exciting afternoon of talks and bold ideas about the future of the internet: how can we build an internet and connected world that is more democratic\, inclusive and resilient for all? \nDuring this event\, we will also launch a compilation of radical new visions for the internet\, by both leading and emerging thinkers and artists from Europe and beyond. This event is organised by the NGI Move\, EU Engineroom and recently launched NGI Forward projects. \nThis March marks the thirtieth anniversary of the World Wide Web. As we reflect on its history\, we must also take the opportunity to think about what we want the future of the web\, the internet and everyday life in a connected world\, to look like. The internet has undoubtedly brought us a lot of good over the past decades\, but its astronomical impact has not always led to the betterment of society. Power over our data is concentrated in the hands of very few players and new technologies are creating cracks in our democracies. We find ourselves stuck between two dominant models: the monopolistic corporate-led internet of Silicon Valley and large-scale government surveillance systems of Beijing. \nCan we now come up with a third narrative\, where citizens and communities are in control and can determine their own future?\nThe Next Generation Internet initiative\, the European Commission’s ambitious new flagship programme which seeks to build an internet that’s more inclusive\, resilient and democratic by the end of the decade\, offers and opportunity for Europe to take charge of shaping such a new narrative. This event is part of a longer series part of the NGI in which we think about the kind of future internet we would like to see. \nRegistration will open at 12:45 with the event starting promptly at 13:30.
