SUMMARY:AI for Good Global Summit
DESCRIPTION:Connecting AI innovators with problem owners for sustainable development\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtificial Intelligence (AI) has taken giant leaps forward in recent years\, inspiring growing confidence in AI’s ability to assist in solving some of humanity’s greatest challenges. Leaders in AI and humanitarian action are convening on the neutral platform offered by the United Nations to work towards AI improving the quality and sustainability of life on our planet. \n \nOrganized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) – the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technology (ICT) – in partnership with the XPRIZE Foundation\, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)and close to 30 sister United Nations agencies\, the 3rd annual AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva\, 28-31 May\, is the leading United Nations platform for inclusive dialogue on AI. The goal of the summit is to identify practical applications of AI to accelerate progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. \n\n\n\n\nThe 2019 summit will highlight AI’s value in advancing education\, healthcare and wellbeing\, social and economic equality\, space research\, and smart and safe mobility.\nThe summit is designed to generate ‘AI for Good’ projects able to be enacted in the near term\, guided by the summit’s multi-stakeholder and inter-disciplinary audience. It also formulates supporting strategies to ensure trusted\, safe and inclusive development of AI technologies and equitable access to their benefits. \nThe 2019 summit will highlight AI’s value in advancing education\, healthcare and wellbeing\, social and economic equality\, space research\, and smart and safe mobility. It will propose actions to assist high-potential AI solutions in achieving global scale. It will host debate around unintended consequences of AI as well as AI’s relationship with art and culture. And a ‘learning day’ will offer potential AI adopters an audience with leading AI experts and educators. \nMore information about the event here.

SUMMARY:FEC5
DESCRIPTION:SAVE THE DATE! The fifth Fed4FIRE+ Engineering Conference (FEC) will be organised on 24-25 April 2019 in Copenhagen\, Denmark.\nThe Fed4FIRE+ project offers the largest federation worldwide of Next Generation Internet (NGI) testbeds\, which provide open\, accessible and reliable facilities supporting a wide variety of different research and innovation communities and initiatives in Europe. Fed4FIRE+ testbed offer: \n\nSimple\, efficient\, and cost effective experimental processes\nIncreased trustworthiness of facilities\nSustainability of the experimental infrastructures\nEasy access to resources for SMEs\, industry and academia\n\nThe Fed4FIRE+ community is at work running and continuously improving the largest federation of facilities\, supporting and offering experimental testbeds based on technologies ranging from wireless\, wired\, cloud services and open flow\, and making them accessible through common frameworks. Besides\, available tools for infrastructure developers open new possibilities\, supporting a broad range of experimenter communities covering a wide variety of Internet infrastructures\, services and applications\, allowing them to focus on their core testbed activities. \nThrough the federation of these infrastructures – a single place where to find and execute technical tests – innovative experiments become possible; a novelty that breaks the boundaries of these domains. The federator also builds on Fed4FIRE’s existing community of experimenters\, testbeds and tool developers and bring them together regularly in Fed4FIRE+ Engineering Conferences (FEC) to have maximal interaction between the different stakeholders involved. \nThe Fed4FIRE+ Engineering Conferences are 2/3-day events (organised twice a year) with a mix of plenary and parallel sessions. The sessions consist out of talks\, tutorials and technical discussions and there is also a demo night session with over 40 experiments which were set up and ran on the federated testsbeds\, a large part of which also received financial support. This is a great opportunity for researchers and developers\, to exchange experiences and inspire each other’s.

SUMMARY:NGI Data Mapping Webinar
DESCRIPTION:NGI Data Mapping Webinar\n \nWe would like to invite you to join our webinar to explore the exciting data science methods and visualisations we developed as part of the Next Generation Internet Initiative\, and learn more about how you can use these kinds of data-driven insights in your own work. \n  \nOur data work\nOver the past year\, we’ve been laying the groundwork for building the research and funding agenda of the Next Generation Internet initiative\, the European Commission’s new flagship programme which seeks to build a more inclusive\, resilient and democratic future internet by the end of the next decade. As part of this work\, we used cutting-edge data-driven methods to map the latest trends in emerging technologies and social issues surrounding the internet. This webinar will showcase the most interesting insights we generated\, and guide you through using the methodologies developed DELab (Digital Economy Lab of the University of Warsaw) and Eurecat (Technology Centre of Catalonia)\, two partners in the EU Engineroom consortium. \nResearch clusters: Institutions who’s researcher work and publish together\nWhen it comes to making decisions about which new technologies or solutions to invest in\, where to focus our attention when it comes to future social challenges or other important decisions that require making our own guesses about what the future might hold\, we often rely on anecdotal evidence or outdated data\, such as company surveys or patent data (often a couple years behind the real trends). New big data methodologies have made it possible to use web data sources like Wikipedia\, Reddit\, Meetup or articles in the tech media\, which have proven much better at picking up early signals of change. In this webinar\, we will tell you more about how our data science team used\, for example\, natural language processing\, network analysis and machine learning to gather insights about how hacker communities talk about quantum computing\, where we find most startups active in the ethical AI  space\, or how the media has covered GDPR. \nAll the methodologies we’ve developed and the underlying data\, code and insights are freely available to the public\, have a look at our GitHub and Zenodo to learn more. Please also have a look at our interactive results page\, which will feature in the webinar. \nWant to know more? Do join us\, learn about our methods and ask any questions you might have. \n  \nThe NGI Data Mapping webinar\nIssue mapping across different areas and geographies\nThe NGI Data Mapping Webinar will give a brief introduction about the project\, after which we will have short presentations on different methods.  \nKristóf Gyódi and Michał Paliński will explain their quantitative text mining analysis\, based on a novel dataset of 140.000 technology news articles. The methodology implements various natural language processing techniques: analysis of term frequencies\, co-occurrences\, sentiment analysis and topic modeling. \nDavid Laniado (Eurecat)\, Laura Portell (Eurecat)\, and Cristian Consonni (University of Trento) will talk about using Wikipedia data to study for example the relationships between different internet-related topics and trends over time. \nParticipating in this webinar does not assume any prior technical knowledge. \nAgenda\n\n\n\nTime\nWebinar outline\nLead by\n\n\n14:00 (5 mins)\nIntroduction\nKatja Bego (Nesta) \n\n\n14:15 (15 mins)\nQuantitative Text Mining using NLP\nKristóf Gyódi\, Michał Paliński (DeLab)\n\n\n14:30 (15 mins)\nWikipedia Network Analysis: Temporal Trends Analysis on Reddit discussions \nDavid Laniado (Eurecat)\, Laura Portell (Eurecat)\, and Cristian Consonni (University of Trento)\n\n\n14:40 (25 mins)\nQ&As \nAll\n\n\n15:00\nFinish\nAll\n\n\n\n  \nYour hosts\nDELab is a transdisciplinary research institute established in 2014. SUMMARY:NGI SALON @ EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
DESCRIPTION:30 years of the Web: where do we go next?\nBuilding radical new alternatives for a more democratic future internet\nJoin us on Friday 22 March at the European Parliament for an exciting afternoon of talks and bold ideas about the future of the internet: how can we build an internet and connected world that is more democratic\, inclusive and resilient for all? \nDuring this event\, we will also launch a compilation of radical new visions for the internet\, by both leading and emerging thinkers and artists from Europe and beyond. This event is organised by the NGI Move\, EU Engineroom and recently launched NGI Forward projects. \nThis March marks the thirtieth anniversary of the World Wide Web. As we reflect on its history\, we must also take the opportunity to think about what we want the future of the web\, the internet and everyday life in a connected world\, to look like. The internet has undoubtedly brought us a lot of good over the past decades\, but its astronomical impact has not always led to the betterment of society. Power over our data is concentrated in the hands of very few players and new technologies are creating cracks in our democracies. We find ourselves stuck between two dominant models: the monopolistic corporate-led internet of Silicon Valley and large-scale government surveillance systems of Beijing. \nCan we now come up with a third narrative\, where citizens and communities are in control and can determine their own future?\nThe Next Generation Internet initiative\, the European Commission’s ambitious new flagship programme which seeks to build an internet that’s more inclusive\, resilient and democratic by the end of the decade\, offers and opportunity for Europe to take charge of shaping such a new narrative. This event is part of a longer series part of the NGI in which we think about the kind of future internet we would like to see. \nRegistration will open at 12:45 with the event starting promptly at 13:30. SUMMARY:NGI SALON @ 4YFN
DESCRIPTION:The past\, present and future of (y)our internet\nTarget participants: Millennials (1980-2000)\nDo you remember the first time you went on the internet? The (open) chat rooms and the pixeled snake? Past\, present and future. By bringing (y)our internet memories and ideals together we will define what’s needed for a fair and sustainable digital future. \nWe start from the premise that Millennials don’t want to\, nor can return to a fully analogue world. We must\, therefore\, learn how to deal positively with the advantages of the world wide web\, and avoid its pitfalls. \nWhilst the internet and the digital revolution have\, doubtless\, provided us with immensely powerful tools\, they have also raised many ethical concerns. This is actually not surprising\, since the digital revolution is still in its early adopting years. Just as the car and car usage have gone through many years of modernization (creation of new traffic rules\, installation of airbags\, seat belts etc.)\, ideas about how we use and should use online digital devices are only starting to be framed. If we want a digital future that reflects the needs of society and the environment\, we need to think\, discuss and act NOW. \nMotivations\, hopes\, achievements: digging into solutions for major societal challenges\, this salon aims to rebuild a Millennial’s portrayal that focuses not on how the internet has gone wrong\, but the ways in which we believe it could be improved and contribute to a better society\, thriving in a rich natural ecosystem. We will be mapping challenges and possible solutions towards a vision for a sustainable society in a technology-pervasive future. \n  \n \n  \nContext\nThis activity is organized within the framework of the Next Generation Internet initiative launched by the European Commission. Results will be presented to the European Parliament.\nThe workshop is organized in collaboration with 4YFN. \n

SUMMARY:Using AI to Fight Disinformation in European Elections
DESCRIPTION:As the European Union readies for its upcoming elections\, accelerating the fight against fake news has become a top priority. Many policymakers are concerned about attempts to covertly use online platforms to insert propaganda and incendiary messages into public discourse in European democracies by targeting particular groups with disinformation campaigns. One powerful tool in the fight against fake news is artificial intelligence (AI)\, which can be used to automatically detect and respond to this content as well as empower users with the ability to verify the veracity of claims. A number of leading tech companies\, including Facebook\, Google\, and Twitter\, have committed to self-regulatory standards and developed a code of practice on disinformation\, and the European Commission is evaluating the extent to which automated tools and self-regulation can counter fake news\, without introducing new distortions to public discourse or stifling freedom of speech. \nJoin the Center for Data Innovation for a conversation about how the public and private sectors can work together to accelerate the use of AI to combat fake news. \nConfirmed Speakers: \n\nPaolo Cesarini\, Head of Unit\, Media Convergence & Social Media\, DG CONNECT\, European Commission\nEline Chivot\, Senior Policy Analyst\, Center for Data Innovation\nClara Hanot\, Advocacy and Fundraising Officer\, EU DisinfoLab\nJens-Henrik Jeppesen\, Director of European Affairs\, Center for Democracy and Technology\nMilan Zubicek\, Public Policy & Government Relations Manager\, Google
